2015-2016 Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it now safe to assume that the first 16 of the chosen ones have been alerted of their higher calling? 😛

Those of you with post-II holds or rejections, are you all from September and October interview dates?

Post-interview hold, as well. Is the hold list different from the wait list?

From adcom101: The WL will not be generated until the second ranking meeting (around 2/9/2016). Even if you are not ranked #1-16 AND you are not flat out rejected, your application is still open/active and would still be in consideration for being ranked #17-32 later. There will be a significant number rejected after this first ranking meeting so don't lose hope if you are not in this first group. As I stated in my prior post, about half of the first 16 accepted last year matriculated elsewhere. This year's applicant pool has been EXCELLENT and probably the MOST competitive ever. There are just SO MANY qualified candidates that we can not offer an interview to everyone (less than 260 will interview out of 1900+ applicants) for this small CCLCM class of 32. Stay positive. Almost everyone who has interviewed here have multiple acceptances already.

What have been the career outcomes for CCLCM alumni? The program focuses on clinical practice AND investigation, so I expect the expected graduate has more of a clinical practice component in his or her career than typical MD-PhDs. What does this balance look like?

We do not make a post-interview waitlist until after the second ranking meeting in a few months. Being on hold means that your application will remain for consideration at that ranking meeting. After that meeting, everyone who interviewed throughout the season will be notified of acceptance, waitlist or rejection.

Our first class graduated in 2009, so our graduates are still in the early years of their careers. Nearly all graduates go into a residency program at an academic center, and many have started fellowships. Some have already taken faculty/staff positions at academic centers, including at the Cleveland Clinic. Our school's goal, of course, is for everyone to go into "academics", although this is a broad term. Our graduating students typically expect to spend the majority of their time working clinically while also pursuing research and/or teaching careers. However, some of my classmates are hoping to run their own labs in the future. Some are also interested in administration or healthcare policy, and will likely become leaders in those fields. I think we're very well prepared to become leaders in any of these areas, and the vast majority of graduating students will go into academics.

Dr. James Young, Dean of CCLCM, is now starting to look at productivity of the alumni in terms of the number publications in peer reviewed journals since graduation. This is one way to measure our success in upholding CCLCM's mission to train the physician investigator. This why there is a heavy emphasis on research and the applicant's commitment to research.

I believe so. Every effort was made to contact everyone before 12/25.

This will be very interesting to see. The set up there seems ideal for it, which is why I'm so in love with the program.

Yes our graduates are still very early in their career arcs. However, I can tell you that our reputation is fairly well-established with many of the residency programs now.

The MSTP rule of thumb of "80/20" that MD/PhDs are supposed to be "in the lab 80% of the time and seeing patients 20% of the time" probably could be reversed for CCLCM grads to be "20/80". However, again YMMV.

Is it safe to assume that all II's have been given out already? I've been on pre-II hold and was told I'd hear back by 12/31 and no word yet... 🙁

I interviewed and haven't heard anything yet. I'm assuming this means rejection post interview?

Same here, also wondering about this
The admissions committee takes their jobs very seriously and every completed application is read completely before making a decision to interview. As such, there are still applications that are in the final process of being reviewed before a decision is made to invite or not. This includes, but isn't limited to, candidates who didn't complete their secondary application until December. "For certain", final decisions will be made and communicated to you within the next two weeks if you will be invited to interview. Furthermore, we understand how stressful - both emotionally and financially this can be. So, reasonable accommodations will be made for those of you who DO receive these late invitations to make sure you CAN interview, or so I'm told. Also - it bears worth repeating that we do not "interview for the waitlist", meaning everyone who interviews is equally capable of being accepted - so do not read too much into interviewing so late in the season. In fact, several of my classmates my year were interviewed on the very last interview day of the season - which illustrates this point.

I interviewed and haven't heard anything yet. I'm assuming this means rejection post interview?
I think that is a just that: an assumption - I cannot speak to your exact candidacy, but we do not, to the best of my knowledge, "silently reject". I wish I could give you more information than that - sorry!

Happy New Year, everyone!

Was rejected post-interview some time between Christmas and new year. No email, portal only. 🙁

Does anyone know when the Cleveland Clinic's second look weekend is?

Post-II hold. Interviewed mid-November.

Are there different types of hold lists or is everyone on hold in the same pile?

We've completed our review of all outstanding applications and have notified the last batch of our interview invitations.

Thank you for the update. Do you know if the admissions office typically updates the portal to let people know they've been rejected? Just trying to get some closure. Haha. 🙁

@vc7777 @adcom101 Thank you very much for all your great information!

May I ask if there is a "High Hold" list besides the "Hold" list this year? Will people who are on "Hold" be considered for the second batch of acceptance in February?

Many thanks!

Has anyone received a hard copy of his or her acceptance yet?

My understanding, based on posts by @adcom101 and others, is that everyone not rejected or accepted post-II is in one big hold list right now. At the next meeting in February, ranks 17-32 and 33-45ish will be generated. So at that point, those in the 33-45 category could perhaps be considered "high hold" since, as per adcom101, it typically takes about 45 offers to fill their 32 seats.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

According to adcom1 post those on hold will be considered for 17-32 ranking. But the hold letter says that we will be considered for a wait list after April 30th. The way I read that is that they're not even looking at our application during February meeting. Please someone tell me I'm wrong. It's really confusing

I also understood it like this... It seems that people who have received the "hold" letter will not be considered for the February acceptance....

Anyone who interviewed and was placed on on hold after the December ranking meeting will be reconsidered at the next ranking meeting. After that ranking meeting, a waitlist will be created for the top applicants who did not receive an immediate acceptance. Good luck and hang in there!

Thank you so much! That's great to know!!!

Any great places to eat near the clinic/ near the double tree hotel?

Did you end up finding anything good? I interview tomorrow and am interested in this question, too.

The canopy grilling the hotel is good. I just ate there out of convenience.

I was going to suggest that as a solid choice. Furthermore I believe the owner is a private practice GI doc, whose daughter is actually a Casemed student/grad. :-D You can't go anywhere in CLE without running into medical profesisonals.

Does Case / CCLCM do phone interviews prior to on campus interviews?

The interview season - and my last interview season - ended yesterday.
It's been a blast for me, and I thank all of you who've put up with me on these threads over the past 7 years: 6 as a CCLCM/CWRU student.

As a general rule: no we would prefer to see you in person, if possible. Of course, there are many exceptions and clear situations or extenuating circumstances that a telephone or video interview can/should/must be done.

Does anyone know when the decisions will come out?

Probably the week of 2/15. PIs will need to be contacted first. Good luck to everyone. There's not much that you can do now except to wait. You all are wonderful and excellent candidates. We have enjoyed your visit with us at CCLCM. The ranking meeting next week will be NOT be easy.

If I sent in an update to Ms. Wright and did not receive a confirmation, should I bug the office again to make sure they received the update?

+1, but I sent my update to the admissions committee email address...?

I withdrew from here several weeks ago by sending an e-mail to the admissions committee e-mail address, but they apparently didn't receive it and I got a call the morning of my interview asking where I was. So I think it would be smart to verify that they received your updates lol
