2015-2016 Dartmouth College (Geisel) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'd also refrain from having my SDN username and FB username from matching... hopefully it's not your surname.
No, it isn't my surname. It's my old middle name that my parents legally changed to another one when I was a kid. Is there a way to change my SDN UN though?

Yeah there's honestly no point in withdrawing. That's completely getting rid of any chance for an II. There's even been people on SDN who have said they wrote the wrong school name by accident and were still accepted to the school they messed up the secondary for. Stay in the running and good luck!
That's reassuring/encouraging to hear! I'm obviously not going to get my hopes up for an interview with Dartmouth at this point but I'm not going to completely give up the application either.

Because that mistake comes across as careless - and even if you 'miss-typed', most will assume you actually copy+paste'd the essay. I believe this has been re-iterated multiple times by the likes of @Goro and @gyngyn

I only suggested that I would withdrawn my application because it would help me sleep better at night.

Edit: My initial post does not imply repercussions or blacklisting, nor was I trying to spook you. I was merely suggesting that withdrawing at this point is more of a professional courtesy.
Okay, thanks for the clarification. I understand where you're coming from and I agree the mistake was careless, but people have differing opinions on what they consider to be unacceptable. I think this is a case where if I'm really lucky, it may be overlooked by a sympathetic adcom... If not, they can just put me in the reject pile and I'll sleep better at night knowing I gave it a shot.

My suggestion:
Write an email with the entire body of the essay included -- it can be the same essay, with just the name changed -- and ask her to replace the current with the one you sent. This way you don't draw attention to what you needed changed specifically.

Also, for all the concern about whether or not this will disqualify you, let me suggest that it seems unlikely that the woman who answered the phone is actually going to end up being one of the members of the ADCOM who actually makes the decision. I am doubting reviewers often answer phones, but I could be wrong. Don't sweat it too much, regardless.
I will definitely do that - much simpler to explain too! Thank you so much! 🙂

The trouble this dumb mistake has caused me... Will definitely be rereading every essay a bazillion times now before I submit. >_>

I'm not sure! But I'd definitely look into it. 😉

Good luck with the cycle, hopefully us Canadians can snag a few spots!

In all honesty, I would politely withdraw my application if I was in your shoes.
This is foolish advice.

What does she have to lose? A rejection? Who cares. If she withdraws she loses any chance of an acceptance.

No, the mistake was foolish.

I was simply stating that I, personally, would withdraw because I would eat myself up inside until my inevitable rejection e-mail arrived. Not worth the stress, I would rather move on. But thank you for chiming in on something that was resolved several days ago.

That's interesting, because I think most people would feel the opposite - feeling more eaten alive about what IF I could have gotten in despite having screwed up the essay. For most of us (I believe), the closure you get from an official rejection is much better than the closure you get from prematurely ending any hopes.

Huzzah! So I emailed them with the entire essay asking them to replace the existing one with my new one. And they made the correction for me! 🙂 🙂 🙂 I am so happy and thankful! Geisel has some very sweet and helpful adcoms.

EDIT: Also thanks to everyone on this thread who gave me advice!

I hope that in your real life, you won't eat yourself up over something like this. Mistakes happen. This wasn't a mistake that caused any suffering or harm to anyone, so there is no reason to eat yourself up over it. Also usually when I'm waiting for results to come back, be it admission decisions or test scores, I never really stress about it. This is the way I see it: there's nothing you can do, you've already done all you can and now it's in the hands of someone else, so why stress? Your stress isn't going to improve your situation. Might as well go on with your life. The wait seems so much shorter that way.

Edit, see bold - Which is precisely why I would withdraw - swapping out school names on a secondary applications is the quickest way to get your application tossed. You can be as optimistic as you want - but that's just the reality of it. And it's been reiterated many times here by individuals way more qualified than me.

It's not about optimism or realism or whatever. It's about the fact that it doesn't take much effort on my part to email them and ask them to make a correction on my application. If they choose not to do it, I have not lost anything by simply asking. Even if there was only a 1% chance that they'd agree to it, my chances are still infinitely better than me withdrawing. However, like I said in past posts, I was not getting my hopes up or anything - I was just giving it one last shot and was fully expecting to be rejected. Capiche?

You are wise. I'm happy everything worked out for you!

Its weird people are getting IIs since the website says Interviews are extended september - april

Probably means that their interview dates are between sept-april. They can invite people for interviews before that.

Ok I messed up and totally didn't see the email for this secondary until today, and I got it on 7/2. It's the most expensive app.

Is it still worth submitting? My LizzyM is ~72

Of course not! One less competitor! 🙂

The gap in time may look strange to adcoms, but they also may not care too much. Not sure on how admissions view secondary turnaround time. Dartmouth heavily favors non-trad students though. I think 85% of last years class was non-trad. So if you fit that, then it might still be worth a shot.

True, they are generally not biased in accepting IS or OOS students. Yet, sometimes schools appear to offer interviews to IS applicants first.

So, I was curious. But, that's clearly not the case here. Again, congrats @MarcyTweets 😉

Although one year of General Biology is the requirement, do you think it's acceptable to list higher-level courses, such as Cell Biology, in its place on the secondary? I did better in advanced courses and would hate for them to just look at General Bio (for calculating GPA or something). And I know that they don't want us to list courses other than those we choose to use to fulfill the minimum requirements. But I can't tell if this is just a check for application eligibility or something more. Thoughts?

When listing an upper division biology course, you are no longer in "general biology." General biology encompasses all aspects of biology - evolution, genetics, cell biology, etc. They can see your grades on your AMCAS, so I do not think they are using it for GPA, but more so to see if you have finished their requirements, and if not you explain that you will be finishing them, before they waste time on your app.

Anyone having any luck seeking out alternative interview dates? I have a work conflict for the offered dates and sent an email to the scheduling coordinator last Thurs right after getting my II to explain..no reply as of yet.

I suppose giving it another day and calling can't hurt. :-S...

Congrats to all who received IIs!

just submitted my secondary application 2 days ago! I am really excited about this medical school! I am hoping for an interview!

Any one know the best way to have someone who has already submitted a letter for me to the school? He is an alumni who wants to attempt to throw his name out for me.
