This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i know this is a dumb question but what do i put under the "college" column in the secondary application? Do we just put the university we took it at?

Hey all. I added Geisel on AMCAS pretty late. My current status is " Your secondary application has been received and is in process." What should it read once my app is processed as being complete and how long might that take?

it comes in pretty fast from my experience.

It's been like that for me since early July and all my materials are in. I think "in process" just means it's complete and waiting to be reviewed/re-reviewed?

Same, mine has looked like that got 3 weeks now.

Thanks! I saw something in earlier threads about a complete email so I just wanted to double check. Good luck to everyone.

Quick question guys. The secondary app asks us to list our upcoming plans for the year. I started working in a lab and dropped my humanities minor as a result of that and instead decided to finish my honors degree. Is this something that I would potentially want to update the school about, and do they take updates?

Thanks,

Thanks,

I was in a similar situation and did take the opportunity to update ADCOMs about it. That being said, it was maybe just a paragraph out of the entire essay, so be sure to let them know of your other activities for the 2015-2016 academic cycle as well.

Does Dartmouth do silent rejections? Or do they periodically send out rejections throughout the cycle?

Found this out at my interview: They send acceptances throughout the cycle, but don't reject anyone until the cycle ends. Acceptances early on in the cycle are rarer, and as the season continues they start sending out more acceptances. Acceptances start going out October 15th. Apparently they have a number ranking system, and your rank may increase or decrease as they see more candidates.

Thanks for sharing this information. Any way to demystify the process is helpful.

Anyone that has had interviews so far - can you share your thoughts/feelings? Conversational? Not so much? Advice? Thank you!!

Wow thank you so much for the insight! I've been complete for about 4 weeks now only, but it looks like it could be a painfully long wait to hear anything then!

Very conversational- I would say almost too conversational at some points, I felt like I was overly comfortable (which is a good thing but can also lead to problems with maintaining professionalism).
The whole interview day experience was very low-key, down-to-earth, welcoming, friendly... there was not one unfriendly or cold face. PM me if you have any specific questions!

To echo another poster, very conversational. As in we talked about my interviewers Zumba class later that night lol. But just go into it feeling confident, there is absolutely nothing to worry about as far as being grilled/put on the spot. Although to be fair I guess it depends on who is doing the interviewing as one person told me they had just been put on the spot by their interviewer...but the vast majority are super friendly and nice. I think the thing to remember is they are mostly looking at you to see how well you would fit into their class. If you've made it to the interview they like you enough on paper. So think about it like: if I get along with people and they like me great! If not I might not have been happy going here anyway

Did anyone that received an II here request a different interview day than what was offered in the email and have success?

I called the admissions office with some questions and asked if they're interviewing on a date I wasn't offered. They were very friendly and understanding...switching my date saved me a few hundred dollars! I think they only offer Tues/Thur interviews though.

Are there hotels nearby that are at reasonable prices? Also, are there free shuttles that run on campus as I will be be sans car since I will be flying in from OOS and having to stay 2 nights due to incongruent flights. -.- Thank you!! 🙂

Hey there,

I just booked my flights as well, and I'll be staying two nights as well. Most of the hotels I saw near the campus were around $120 a night after taxes and all that, and around $60 if you are OK with staying at a cheaper motel. My 2-night hotel ended up being 240... the plane tickets were a whole other story. However, I've never been so excited to spend that much money haha

Does anyone know if interviews are open or closed file?

So so they tell you at least if your application has been reviewed, or does it just say in progress until they reject you in April?

open! my interviewers asked questions very specific to my app- one even had my application open in front of her, I think.

Thanks! Also, were both of your interviewers faculty or did some current medical students serve as interviewers as well?

The hotels in walking distance are pretty expensive. There's a free shuttle that runs around campus, but the campus is extremely small so you shouldn't need it. The same shuttle system also runs to nearby towns (Lebanon and West Leb, mostly), but it only runs on weekdays, mostly 6am-6pm. Check out advancetransit.com.

Also, for those of you flying into Boston and taking the Dartmouth Coach, make sure you plan on getting to the airport fairly early. That 3 hour coach trip can turn into 4 hours in Boston rush hour traffic. If you're going to rent a car, check out flights into Burlington VT. It's a shorter, prettier, and less congested drive than coming from Boston.

VT is beautiful guys. I would def second this suggestion.

I am about to complete my secondary for Dartmouth tonight or tomorrow night, but I'm concerned that I may be too late to the rodeo. I took the MCAT in July and my committee letter writer will not put you into the letter que until she has a complete file and then it takes another 6ish weeks to get the committee letter (which, for me, looks like 2-3 more weeks). I'm a nontrad with a 72ish LizzyM. Is there a way to know if it's not worth submitting? For instance, I heard one of the schools I submitted a primary app to has already issued two thirds of their II's already. Thoughts?

P.S. Don't pull any punches. I live in Alabama. I'm competitive for my state schools and we have a really high matriculation rate.

When do you think your committee letter would be in by? Middle to end of October? Anything after September is late, but if you don't apply you surely won't get in 😛

probably early to mid October. The messed up part is that it's only late for schools outside my state. One guy I know didn't take his MCAT until August last year and still got in to both state schools that cycle. So, will I be ok? Probably. Will I get looked at by the out of state schools that I'm interested in? Maybe not....and that makes me sad. Our committee letters take a long time and you have to have MCAT score in before you are placed in the que.

You might look into being hosted by a first year if they have space in order to cut down on cost. It can get pricey around campus! Also to clarify, the shuttle is actually the region's free public transit.

I would not worry if you have not heard yet either. Dartmouth does take their time to process everything!

Hey guys. I just got offered an interview at UVM. I have not received any communication or interview from Dartmouth, but if at all possible, I'd like to only make the trip up from the Southeast once. Does anyone know if Dartmouth is receptive to "In the area" emails?

They are.

I'm in the same exact situation, except I live in the middle of a cornfield in the Midwest, with very expensive air travel.
I'm curious to what the "in the area" emails are supposed to do? Is it trying to have them give me a pity interview? Does it simply speed up their review time of my file?
I hate to contact them and look needy but, truth is... I'M SO NEEDY RIGHT NOW.

EDIT: Sent my first ETA email... I feel dirty.
