2015-2016 Duke University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Which email have you guys been sending updates too? It looks like they have 2 emails: [email protected] and [email protected]? I didn't realize but I ask because for my updates I haven't heard received any reply.

I sent my update to both emails just to be sure, and I haven't received a confirmation reply. I was debating whether or not I should call them. I feel like by this point, if it wasn't properly added to my file, its too late.

Calling them is a nightmare. You have to sit through a minute and a half recording that says 3 different times about how it is easier to email them questions versus calling them.

Hahaha yah I know! Did you call to make sure your update was properly received?

I just about had a heart attack when I got an email from Duke, only to see that it was about their NUS program :/

Also, today in my SCUBA class, which is usually when I try to get my mind OFF apps, my instructor mentioned DukeMed like 4x in reference to their hyperbaric research, which of course caused me to dwell on it even more. GRRRRRR.

Called the admissions office today for y'all (and of course for my own sake!), and they don't have an exact day for decisions, but it's going to be "soon". So early next week is highly likely!
You da bomb

March?

For the past couple of years they've been releasing decisions on the last Monday in February. Maybe that will hold true this year.

Makes sense. They said first week of March which is next week.

anyone know what time? I want to know what time so I can stay away from my email lol. This is too much to handle :nailbiting:

I sent an update over email ~2 weeks ago and it still hasn't been read, nervous that it just won't be considered before acceptances are sent out

Can any students comment if there is funding for students to present their research from third year at conferences?

For any of you who applied PCLT: are we also considered for the MD-only program if rejected from PCLT? I know this was the case for previous years, but I've completely forgotten what we were told... 🙂

For those who got in here, how long did your secondary essays end up being? I'm finding that I'm really abusing this no-character-limit thing

We are still waiting to hear back from Duke, but I did interview with them. Mine ended up being 3/4 to 1 page singled space for each question. However, I think it is more about the quality than the quantity, but if you are truly passionate about your responses it should be more than a paragraph, lol. Also, I think its good to get to the point and not just ramble on. This was one of the hardest secondaries that I did because it made me dig deep and put words to feelings and experiences that I have had. You should be moved with some type of emotion when writing this secondary, if you are not, then I would encourage you to go a little deeper. Basically, don't worry about the word count, just make sure you say what you need to say and give everything you have to this secondary. Hope this helps and good luck!

Since we're all waiting for decisions, meaning no one knows yet whether they got into Duke or not, you'll probably not get a good answer.

I was invited for an interview, and one of my essays was slightly over two pages (single spaced), the second about two pages long, and the others ~3/4 pages long.

EDIT: I also did not write any of the optional essays. I figured I had written enough already.

Thanks for the input y'all. I guess I didn't realize Duke accepts people a bit later, a few of my premed friends already have acceptances so I guess I figured most schools had accepted people. Either way, good insight and it's made me feel ok about my responses - so far most of the essays are about 3/4 of a page long or more, so it seemed unusually long for secondaries. Definitely one of the tougher ones I've written.

My essays averaged 300-400 words; i doubt stretching out the prompts will help you.

So is tomorrow a safe bet? Or should we wait for March 1st?

Is there some kind of unwritten rule about this that I missed?

BurghMed is just saying that you're really early in asking about secondaries for next cycle. Everyone else is freaking out because today is very likely the day we all figure out if we have been accepted or not. So that's kind of the priority right now.

yes, and you're currently breaking it. All of your questions have been answered ad nauseam months ago and in years past within Duke threads. By posting, you're essentially convincing people like me who pathetically sit on sdn waiting for others to note their acceptances/rejections at Duke, for which many of us have been waiting months. When we see that Duke is at the top of the school specific forum, only to see posts about irrelevant secondaries (both irrelevant this cycle and the next, at this point in time) we are wildly disappointed. I'm simply posting what everyone else is thinking.

Edit: no worries, now you know.

So it seems like last year's phone calls went out according to score... at least I think that was the final conclusion the sdners came to. Are we thinking that is how e-mails will come out this year? Any ideas? Penny for your thoughts.

Are you implying that there will be no phone calls this year?

Yeah it's all email this year

I called about this today because on the portal it says no decisions via phone but on my interview day was told acceptances via phone. Today I was told "some decisions will be given over the phone."

My guess is that "some decisions" means acceptances.

Did they say anything about when?

When you see a new email from a sender that starts with "Med" and it ends up being a rejection email from a school you forgot you applied to and not Duke...

On my interview day they said calls for acceptances and emails for all others. Not sure if that'll be the case but I distinctly remember them saying that! Good luck to everyone 🙂

I swear they said completely different things on different interview days because at mine they said it would be all emails due to last year's debacle with the snow storm and acceptance notifications being messed up.

Same

I feel like it's not going to be today. Two years ago when they had phone calls they started calling early in the morning
