2015-2016 Eastern Virginia Medical School Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In last years thread, someone contacted the office and they said they were screening OOS applicants 30+ MCAT. I haven't personally confirmed this, but that might answer the question!

I have no idea what to think in that case. My GPA is below 3.4 but not very far below, and my MCAT is greater than 35. I suppose I could have better ECs but they're decent enough, in my opinion, or at least decent enough to not merit being screened out of a secondary lol. They were decent enough to get an II at a school that emphasizes ECs, at any rate. Oh well, one less secondary to worry about.

I definitely don't think that's how they're screening. My GPA is below 3.4 and I got a secondary.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe!

3.52 overall, 3.80 science, 28 MCAT. I do have military experience, though.

A poster in another thread said I'll never get an interview invite with a sub 30 MCAT, though. I'll report back if I manage to get one! 😛

Interested to see what happens with this one, stilllllllll waiting on verification (stupid quarter system!)

That seems to make sense, both my GPAs are under 3.4. The messed up thing is, on their MSAR their 10th percentile sGPA is 3.0 and cGPA is 3.2. My GPAs were comfortably above those thresholds, so I wasn't expecting to get screened out on their account. My MCAT is well above their 90th percentile, to boot.

I think what is happening is that they're screening out OOS, non-URMs with sub 3.4 GPAs in order to make room for IS/URMs with low GPAs. I'm not saying this to complain, but simply I can't think of any other explanation for the discrepancy between their supposed screening policy and their 10th percentile GPAs.
Me too! I'm OOS and very non-trad and my AMCAS GPA is <3.4, but over 3.8 for my last 140 credits, competitive MCAT (510+), research with publications and significant presentations, medical missions abroad, lots of other volunteering. I've made it through lots of other screens already, so I'm sure I'll find a school that's a better fit for me. Good luck, everyone!

I have a cGPA < 3.4 and I got a secondary, so 3.4 cGPA can't be a cut off! I should get started working on this secondary soon...been sitting in my inbox for over a week.

I'm an OOS, non-URM with a cGPA of 3.32 and I got a secondary so I feel like there might be more to it? I really can't say for sure. I'm really sorry to hear about that though. I wish you the best of luck for all your other applications!

Same here on all counts!

Agreed...I'm also low 3.3, OOS, ORM, etc.

IS, received secondary 7/10........ definitely should have started earlier, now i'm kicking myself in the rear.

Anyone know if there is a large disadvantaged patient population near/around EVMS? For example, large proportion of patients on Medicaid, immigrants, etc. I would like to know if it is appropriate to talk about the ability to work with and serve underserved communities around EVMS as a reason for my interest in the school.

Well... the school is in Norfolk.

From your response, I 'm going to guess that Norfolk is either really affluent, or really poor/underserved. I'm going to go with the latter. Thanks for your help.

It's not a bad thing to talk about either way. You won't be at their school's med center forever!

So I got a C- in one quarter of Gen Chem my first year... they keep on repeating :
"Applicants must have grades of C or better in all required courses." on website
You are required to have a grade of "C or better" in all prerequisite courses. (C- in any prerequisite course will no be accepted). on secondary

So does this mean I shouldnt submit my secondary ... ? even if my gpa and mcat are better than their averages ? Seems like a silly rule for a school with some of the lowest avg stats

You'll just need to re-take that semester of Gen Chem either this fall or spring! I'm in the same boat with my second semester of orgo (killer), and I spoke to someone at the admissions office about it.

Has anyone gotten any sort of verification about their secondary? I submitted mine a week or so ago and besides the email saying it was received I haven't heard anything else, and was wondering if anyone else had?

I got one saying my application was complete and that I'd get notification when a decision regarding my candidacy has been made.

How long after you submitted it did you get that email?

Hmmmm all I've gotten was the one that said
"Thank you for submitting your Supplemental Application. You will be notified when your file is complete."

lmao you're right; it is the latter. Within the city of Norfolk is some of the more impoverished areas of Virginia.

wait, they screen? i don't even have an MCAT score to my name yet (just took it in July) and I got my secondary today. then again, i'm in-state and I have a cGPA and sGPA of 3.5 if that means anything.

for reference: i called and confirmed, if you have anything below a C in a pre-req, don't bother completing the secondary

rejected pre-secondary
OOS gpa >3.4 mcat>30
🙁

EDIT: called and found out they had misread a transcript so i am back in the game. moral of the story - get secondaries or die trying.

Wait...should I call and ask about it? It seems petty but this is a top school for me. I'm in-state. LizzyM 69?

What did they say to you? They told me it was fine, that I would just have to indicate I was re-taking the class. If they really won't admit anyone with a C-, I would have imagined they wouldn't have offered secondaries to those individuals (maybe wishful thinking). If not, then I'd like to know before I spend 100$ 😉

I guess it could be fine if you're retaking. I'm not in college so the grade's not gonna change. Thus they said they won't accept it

Same! When do you think we will get a response back? I like how the school doesn't keep you wondering.
I'm hoping we hear something in the near future but I'm bracing myself to not hear back from some schools until sometime next year... I really hope we don't have to wait that long!

Yes, I work at Norfolk General Hospital, located on same campus as EVMS, a large majority of patients I see are uninsured

For those of you who got a complete email, when did you submit? I submitted 10 days ago and still haven't gotten one

Hmmm so you think I should contact them then? It's not like there's really a way to check your status on the application page

Ok yeah just for the sake of my neurotic mind I emailed them to make sure I wasn't missing something

Definitely. I have no idea if I emailed the right person though since they don't really tell you who to contact

The why EVMS essay seems difficult if you are from OOS, since they are adamant about serving Hamptons Road region/ VA

For anyone who would find this useful:

Got a rejection today, pre-secondary. I'm OOS. Called and they said MCAT was too low. Mine was a 506 and their cutoff is 508.

Very easy to get a hold of admissions!

Wait really? 508 is about the 77th percentile, which was between 29 and 30 on the old MCAT. Their cutoff for previous years was a 27 (61st percentile, 503) . That's a huge jump, but unfortunately it seems like a lot of schools are doing things like that with the new scores. Tough for us applying this year.

I got a 507 on the MCAT and received a secondary. OOS. So it has to be more than that. I have a 3.95 GPA though..ECs on my MDapps if you're extra curious.

Yea those who have been screened out confuse me. I had 3.2 and 510 on the MCAT. Submitted last night to them and got it this morning. No way they had time to review my application to screen it
