2015-2016 Medical College of Wisconsin Application Thread

Is anyone else having issues submitting the secondary? It is saying that one of the fields is invalid when I press submit, but it doesn't tell me which one and I can't figure out which one could possibly be invalid.

Me too. I emailed and called them, and still waiting to hear back :bored:

Is it worth applying to the regional campuses if you don't have strong ties to wisconsin but want to work with underserved communities, in say, California?

Applying here too! No secondaries yet, but I figure I better start working on these. I had the same question as the quote above, though. I'm interested in underserved communities, but I don't have any ties to Wisconsin. I'm not interested in committing to any state at this point, haha. In that same vein, since my application talks about serving underserved populations, I wonder if not applying to the regional campuses will look strange. What do you guys think?

Hey guys. For the FAP waiver, I had to forward the email I got from AMCAS regarding me getting accepted for FAP to a lady at the admissions office. They emailed me back a one time code for the waiver.

The admissions office replied within 20 minutes, so I'd hop on it ASAP!! 🙂

So the regional campuses are geared towards applicants from underserved communities, local Wisconsin communities, and/or with a lot of experience and interest in serving underserved populations. If I do not fit into any of these categories, is it worth applying to the regional campuses vs just to Milwaukee? Any thoughts?

What is it you want to know?
Which pathway did you choose? From my understanding it is only for two years but you can continue into MS3 if you want? From the looks of the curriculum it is built in with your other classes - but are they actual classes or workshops that you participate in? Or is it like a side project while you are mostly focused on your other classes?
It jumps out at me as something a little different than other schools. At least from what I've seen, most other schools have a set curriculum and tell you to do research in the summer if you want - I haven't seen much in terms of structured experiences about specific paths like bioethics or health systems management.

Here's my take on how applicants should look at the Scholarly Pathways of MCW:
First and foremost, they are a supplementation to the standard material that every med school in the country offers. What I mean by that is that the various Pathways are a means to personalize a part of your med school education. No two students have the same experience or learn the same things because each person focuses on things interesting to themselves. I know it sounds really generic; but, at their core, Pathways are a framework for independent learning.

So your next question is how does it work: During the first semester the new M1s are given a high level introduction to each of the Pathways. From that, they pick 1 which they will participate in for the remainder of the year. Each Pathway has once a month events called "core-sessions" where all students in that Pathway (M1-M3) get together to participate in didactics / discussions / simulations / PBL / etc. - however the session is organized. Examples are Physician Scientist might have a session where they evaluate scientific papers, Clinician Educator may have a session on preparing lessons plans, Bioethics my have a session about court cases that defined patient rights, Quality may have a session teaching process mapping... you get the point. My understanding is that each core session is intended to give you tools to help in your individual learning. Outside of the core sessions, students have protected time 1 afternoon per week to focus on their individual learning. Each pathway has different things that can be counted towards individual learning - bench research, community activities, reading journal articles, online courses, etc. This is where the majority of a student's Pathways time is spent - doing things that are interesting to them.

If at the end of M1 year a student wants to switch into another pathway, that is totally cool. In terms of time commitment, every M1 gets overwhelmed initially by the thoughts of Pathways, but that is just because most are not used to non-structured educational activities. In terms of time commitment, Pathways are low but they can be as much as a student wants. And when it comes to summer research, some people continue to work on a Pathways related project over the summer between M1 & M2 years, while others choose to work on something completely unrelated. And some students do no research during that summer, which is also fine.

Current M1 from the new MCW Green Bay campus here. If anyone has questions about the new program, feel free to tag me and I'll do my best to answer them, although I can't exactly tell you what it's like as a student, as we begin classes tomorrow. Milwaukee is a great campus, and I'm so glad we get to share resources with them! I think we've got something pretty special happening here too.

Hi Wisconsin_Cheese! What information can you provide about Pathways available in GB? I believe everyone participates in the Physician in the Community Pathway, right? What exactly does that entail? A community health project, volunteering in schools, etc.? Thanks for the info and have a great first day of classes!

Thanks! You are correct that there is only a single pathway for GB students (I believe it is unique to the GB campus, although I can't speak for what the new Wausau campus is going to do). That is one of the aspects of the curriculum that I don't have any concrete details on at the moment, but I hope to soon be able to provide at least a snapshot of what it involves. I'll try to get back to you later on that.

Hello, any update on the letter situation? Should I just wait a couple more days for the letters to show up in the app (they've been submitted and received through AMCAS).

Do you think it's fine to use MCW throughout the entire secondary, being that the essay question and e-mail all say MCW instead of Medical College of Wisconsin? Trying to save room for the characters!

I think that should be fine. At least, that is my plan!

Anyone else's app still say 1/2 for supplemental material? My letters have been at AMCAS and assigned to MCW for about a week now

same for me but when i turned in my secondary the email said it takes about a week so I'm gonna wait till Wed or Thu before I call

I added this school on Friday and still haven't received a secondary. They don't seem to screen so I guess I should just expect one soon?

EDIT: Nvm, just received one!

Has anyone that isn't verified received the secondary/has anyone else still not received the secondary?
...just wondering if I should be asking about not receiving one yet

I asked about this. None of the schools that I have applied to have received my letters yet-- here's the reply from St. Louis:

"We have received communication from AMCAS that they are experiencing difficulties transmitting letters of recommendation for all applicants. In this case, you are not at any disadvantage, as it is a system-wide problem. As soon as the letters are available, we will receive them automatically. Thank you."

IT'S NOT OUR FAULT!! 🙂

Is anyone else having problems with this showing up when trying to submit the Secondary App? "One or more fields on this form are not valid. The invalid fields should indicate what is not valid with a description beneath the label (fields marked as required may remain blank at this time). The fields must be corrected before the form is saved."

Hey, can somebody clarify this for me? Everybody is saying there are 7 essays, but to my knowledge theres only 4 right? 1 for the main WHY MCW prompt, and 3 more for the regional campuses, for a total of 4 right? Can somebody confirm?

One or more of your essays is probably too long-- I had this problem and it turns out that I was two words over on one of them! Maybe their page counts words slightly differently than Microsoft Word??

Confirmed . . . no clue where the 7 essay thing came from!

On the first day the secondaries were sent, MCW indeed had 7 essays all together and cut it down to 4, thankfully. So technically everyone was right lol

anyone have their letters in? submitted 7/4 but it still says 1/2 with no letters yet. my letters have been received at other schools i've turned secondaries in so I'm a little annoyed/impatient/neurotic

Wait a minute.... if you're not applying to the regional campuses and are just applying to the main campus in Milwaukee, the only essay we had to answer was the Why MCW question, right?

Hi there,
Are you from Wisconsin? And is most your class in-state?

Thanks for your help.

Did anybody, after submitting their secondary, go back to it and find that instead of their essays being formatted into paragraphs, the system just clumped it together in one giant paragraph for all 3000 characters of the supplemental essays? Hopefully its not only me because I'm freaking out haha!

+1
+2 -- St. Louis told me that AMCAS is having a technical glitch that affects all applicants.

Hey there. Most (if not all) of our class is from Wisconsin or has significant ties: grew up in WI, attended college here, etc... I was a WI resident when I applied, and there is definitely an emphasis to build these regional campuses with students who are likely to stay in the area.

Would you say this is true for all campuses? I read that they put a lot of emphasis on in-state students for the Green Bay/Central Wisconsin locations, but I'm curious if it is the same for Milwaukee?

No, that is not true for Milwaukee. Students are from all over the country. For many, their first visit to WI was for their interview. MCW has no quotas for in-state students since it is private.

The intent of the GB & Central WI campuses is to produce physicians that are likely going to stay in WI to practice. As such, it is no surprise that the majority of the GB class is from WI with a minority from IL (per a poster displayed outside of the Admissions office)

been verified for 3 days. no secondary yet :yeahright:

Everyone still in the 1/2 complete and no letters received state? Or alternatively, has anyone had their letters uploaded/received?

I am still undecided about which campus to select, so I haven't started the application yet. Does anyone know if you can switch campuses after the first login page if you change your mind?

My letters still have not been received yet
