2015-2016 Tulane University Application Thread

Is there any sort of second look activity for Tulane? I never saw an email about one, but I wanted to check.

I'm pretty sure they don't do one anymore, because the last time they did, after it too many people ended up deciding to attend and the class ended up being over enrolled

That's kind of odd, you think they'd want to maintain anything that protects their yield and the accept fewer the next year. I wish they did have one though, if my wait lists get active I'm not sure I could make a confident decision because I was at Tulane over 6 months ago.

Unfortunately, I think the second part of your post is the exact reason they did it. They probably want to make sure the people deciding to attend are totally committed to the school and being in New Orleans, even without having been down there in a long time. I agree that it's definitely rough though, because it's hard to get a complete picture of a school during the stress of interview day. Maybe they assume that if people really feel they need a second look, they will choose to visit on their own time (which, in my opinion, is also somewhat unfair, because not everyone can afford to just up and hop down to NOLA for a weekend). But I'm sure in the end you'll end up at the school you're meant to be at!

Do you absolutely need a car 3rd and 4th year or could you be fine with just public transport/biking?

Public transport is too unreliable to depend on for 3rd and 4th year. I don't trust New Orleans drivers enough to bike, but some of my classmates do. For some rotations like peds and obgyn, you'd have to carpool with someone because the hospital is out a ways.

Does anyone know whether applying to the ACP program affect your chances of getting pulled off the waitlist? Tulane is my top choice but ideally I'd like to get pulled off the waitlist.

I think you'd be better off writing a strong, heartfelt, and very convincing letter of intent. But that's just my opinion.

For my financial aid stuff on Gibson it says "Medical School Addendum Status: Waived by FA Office" is it supposed to say that? And do they need my parents tax returns?

I know some people said to send tax returns, but I do see where on the site/addendum they ask for that.

Edit: I decided not to be lazy and called. They said that you do not need to mail in tax returns

Did anyone here who interviewed in February get an acceptance? I don't know if I should attribute my "acceptance range" to rolling admissions or my app.

Does anyone know what the password is to access the orientation packet online? I tried to use my Gibson password but it didn't work

Could you post the link?

Neither of my passwords work either. Perhaps they are waiting to give permissions until they have the final matriculating class?
They plan to have the password out by June. So the information may not be updated. May have just been changed from class of 2019 to class of 2020.

Yeah after you pay the deposit, they will send an email with your Tulane ID, @tulane.edu email address, and a temporary password.

Has anyone had an aid package appear on Gibson yet?
When I called they said they were aiming to get em out this week or the next.

The lady on the phone said that they are working out how to divide the little financial aid funding they have -_-

So I know that the acceptance range email said that the bulk of the wait list movement would happen in May because people can only hold 1 acceptance after April 30th, but, can anyone comment on how accurate that is? It seems that no one on SDN has gotten pulled from the wait list...

If I had to guess, Tulane probably overaccepts initially (as do many schools), and so until the number drops to a certain threshold, waitlist movement is unlikely. However, that being said, I'm pretty sure people are still waiting on hearing back from financial aid. So given how expensive Tulane is, I'd wager that once people start hearing back about financial aid, people with start giving up their acceptances, because it's often hard to rationalize attending such an expensive school if you're also holding an acceptance from a school that won't leave you in debt up to your eyeballs. But again, this is just me hypothesizing.

That's where I'm at. As much as I really love Tulane, the cost is not reasonable

But the cheap schools keep waitlisting me. Hear from my last cheap school tonight, so wish me luck and there might be one more open spot at Tulane!

Should've known "this week or the next" meant "the next". Or possibly the next after next 😛

Oh you kind, kind soul. On behalf of all of us waitlisters, thank you.

306 people in the accepted students fb group though. thats a lot more than 192 seats..... I hope that doesnt have too much implications for the waitlist

^I'd say around half or less than half are current students. I have a hunch that there will be a good amount of withdraws from OOS applicants with cheaper options elsewhere. I'll be withdrawing from my spot as well. Good luck to you guys!

My financial aid package is now on Gibson. But not sure if they release them all at once or as they complete them.

Anybody else having trouble logging onto Gibson?

Every time I log on, it brings me back to the home page where no options are available to me.
Any ideas? 😀

Did you click on the menu dropdown? Or does it say your name in the upper right corner?

You might want to call them. Mine had been doing that too, and turned out they needed to reset something in my account.

Just called, got it fixed!
Award hasn't been released yet 😛

Honestly, Im just holding out on the off chance they decide I'm super awesome and give me tons of money. Otherwise I'll be going to my cheaper state school and will withdraw. Maybe they will! Tulane is awesome, wish I could go.

Can any current students comment on the quality of opportunities at Tulane? Kind of concerned because I keep hearing "Tulane is great for people interested in underserved communities and public health", neither of which interest me personally. Is there a lot of time available to research? Is there any kind of funding besides the DeBakey Scholars program (which I understand is a $2,000 summer stipend) ? Are there a lot of productive labs or "big name" labs that would be good for LORs for residency? Will I be the odd one out for actually liking research while everyone else is focused on other stuff? Sorry for the bombardment of questions, I'm just concerned that I A) won't fit in and B) will be paddling up river when it comes to finding really solid research opportunities.

I dont think there is really that much in the way of formal research programs for med students. It will probably be mostly just cold calling and pounding on doors to try and see which profs want med students to do research with.

I don't know that much about finding research at Tulane, but I flipped through your posts, and I can absolutely without a doubt tell you that the research at Tulane will be nowhere near as big of a thing as it will be at Case (saw you got accepted there. Mad props dude, that place is impressive)

Tulane lost a lot of funding and big name researchers after Katrina (there have been articles/reports about this. When I told my lab that I was accepted here, that is one of the first responses I got). Every current student at the interview mentioned that Tulane "is not a research powerhouse."

That being said, they have enough to get where you need to go. I also don't think big name researchers matter as much as big name clinicians for LORs. For research, you mostly just want to be productive and publish.

Tulane is also known for having a lot of free time compared to other med schools and I know the DeBakey program requires a half-day in lab a week, so you'll have time if you want it.

I like research, so you won't be alone.

I can't answer your question about the depth of research available, but I would still suggest considering other schools more strongly if only because NOLA's community of underserved and Tulane's dedication to public health might be too deeply embedded in the experience for someone whose interests lie in other things. I wouldn't want you to get to orientation and find yourself uninterested in or disengaged from communities and topics that your peers or school find very important.

My aid package has appeared in Gibson. No email came about it. If you're still waiting, might want to take a look.

I didn't get nothing. The COA is over 10xs my efc -_-

But thanks for the heads up

I'm withdrawing -_- $30K extra was the most I was willing to pay for Tulane.

They really should at least freeze tuition like the other schools I've been accepted to have done. By 2020 they will be over $65K/yr.

I hope you all enjoy NOLA!!! And good luck to waitlisted applicants!

Tulane is nowhere near Case when it comes to research. However, if your passion is research and you really want to come here, the two can mix. We don't have any formal programs (that I know about) besides DeBakey but nearly every person I know that's wanted to do research, has been able to find a project. Like someone mentioned above, it's a fair amount of pounding on doors if you have specific research interests. However if you simply want to get into a lab then it's not as hard. Some departments are more organized than others. Some churn out papers left and right while others are lucky to get a few out a year. It totally depends.

Also, don't worry about not fitting in with the underserved and public health crowd. While it is a big part of our clinical curriculum simply because this city is nearly entirely underserved, you won't have a problem fitting in with your classmates if it's not your passion. I lie in the middle of the underserved spectrum of caring, in that I see it as a big issue that needs to be fixed but not something I'm truly passionate about. I'm not in a leadership role in any of the clinics and generally don't do more than is required in that realm. I fit in just fine.

A good chunk of each class is involved in the clinics, partly because there's a lot of clinics that need to be staffed but also because it's a great leadership opportunity and early exposure to real medicine. However, that doesn't mean not wanting to be involved in them makes you stand out. You won't be the outlier. There are plenty more like you.

Hope this helps!

ETA:
For not having a "strong" research program, we have a surprising amount of big names in the research field. Everyone is very approachable and focused on setting the students up for success by giving us projects and calling in favors with colleagues from outside institutions. The Tulane name carries you farther than you may think initially.
