II yesterday. Complete mid-Sept. OOS
They don't have interview booking through their portal though, just received an email.

They do have interview booking through the portal, but it's not very obvious.. You should have a link on the left hand side called "Visit Arrangements", just under the password one.

For some reason I actually never had that tab on my portal and had to email them to set up my interview date.

Isn't this year-to-year fluctuation in % honors just disturbing and unpredictable? Huge shifts like that probably has more to do with the writer of the tests than the difference in knowledge of the students

Have you collected data on this or is it primarily anecdotal? I'm just curious. I mean, Dr. Cheng said that he reused something like 45/50 questions from last year's renal exam, and I thought it was very fairly written. I honestly just think that our class performed (relatively) mediocre compared to the previous year's class on that exam.

Overall, I feel like the advice from upperclassmen regarding individual classes, distribution of honors, etc... has been pretty spot on so far. But if you've collected data on year-to-year fluctuations, I'll happily concede that the variability is larger than I currently feel that it is.

Data excerpts a few years old here. Years below refer to 'class of X'
Pharm honors: 2013 18.4%, 2014 45.2%, 2015 60%
Renal honors: 2013 61.3%, 2014 42.9%, 2015 42.1%
ObGyn honors: 2013 94.4%, 2014 40.2%, 2015 78.9%
GI honors: 2013 64.8%, 2014 64.8%, 2015 91.9%
Pulm honors: 2013 27.6%, 2014 25.8%, 2015 47.6%
ENT honors: 2013 86.9%, 2014 87.1%, 2015 72.7%

Any idea what causes some of the pretty significant variations between the years?

Fair enough, thanks. Couple notes on this:

*Pulm is substantially higher now (>70%) and is the easiest exam of CPR block

*Pharm is relatively stable at around 40%, but this is a moot point since this class is going to be P/F from next year on (now part of first year)

*Can't comment on OB/GYN since we haven't had it yet

When the mean is between 90-92 each year, I don't think fluctuations +/-10% of people with honors is that unexpected.

For those that decided to stay in Olin Hall - how was it?

edit: is there access to irons and ironing boards?

It basically is like a college dorm. I was lucky and due to some confusion with rooms I was given a suite which has a bathroom and maybe(?) an ironing board?

My room was pretty desolate. But it was worth the convenience (and the price).

I ironed a little on the small desk in my room.

Edit: I think there is a laundry room in the basement. Might be an ironing board there!

Can someone comment on the city of St Louis? Is it like Ferguson? OOS so my perception looking in might be completely different.

I'm not from the area but have visited friends multiple times in St. Louis and I actually really enjoy the city. I'm not quite sure why St. Louis gets the bad rap it does (maybe because it's compared to cities like NYC or Boston?). Anyways, my take is that its pretty detached from Ferguson and seems to be a 30 or so minute drive from Ferguson to Wash U, so that shouldn't be a concern at all (at least in my mind).

Hmm his only two posts are just "Accepted" in this thread and Northwestern's.

I go to Wash U as an undergrad right now - the area near the med school is not at all like what I assume you imagine Ferguson to be like. The med school is in the Central West End, which is a lively neighborhood with nice shops and restaurants. It is also right next to Forest Park which is great if you like to go on runs/walks, and there are a bunch of free museums. That being said, you don't have to go too far to end up in more dangerous/less nice areas. In general though, the city has lots to discover and it never feels too crowded. People are SUPER friendly.

Thanks for your insight -- I'm curious about this also. As a med student, do you ever have to go to any of the "bad" areas? like for some sort of clinical training or something?

edit: Sorry - I missed the part "as an undergrad right now". Maybe someone else can comment.

Per our interview day, they said they interview 900-1000 people. Ridiculous, I know.

wow..thats pretty intense.. I was looking at the US news numbers for intl, since I am one: interview approx ~ 100/500 applicants, accept ~1/3 of which ~10 matriculate... not horrible odds, but still pretty intense.

Doesn't Columbia do a similar thing?
So like I'm obviously only going to be super familiar with the nine other top teir schools I applied today so I guess if Columbia does that I was not aware.

Hi. I am currently a grad student at Wash U. As per your concerns of going to WUSM and being anywhere close to areas like ferguson or ferguson itself, no worries! I was also concerned when I first moved to STL as well - "can I just "mistakenly" end up in Ferguson," I always asked. And really, truth is if you find yourself in ferguson, you have to WANT to go there to get there - i.e. you cannot just make a wrong turn and bam! ferguson.

The area where you will be at Wash U (in my opinion) is SO far removed from other areas of STL. If you visit, you will see that Wash U (both med and undergrad campus (Danforth)) are situated in and close to the best areas in town. Most people are okay with that. Personally, it is very nice to be in the finer areas but as a prospective physician dedicated to community health and finding ways to eliminate disparities among minority populations, I would prefer NOT to be as far removed from the problems I saw that inspired me to pursue medicine in the first place. But of course, one does not have to live or study in such an environment simply because he/she is dedicated to helping people from that environment.

STL, like other cities,is very divided (in terms of resources, safety, race...i.e. the worst neighborhoods are clustered in a certain area (North County, for example) but also tend to have the most African Americans, the least resources( clinical, economical...)..etc. Of course most cities are like this but STL is more so divided than any other city I have lived in. BUT you will more likely than not be situated in the best parts of town as a WUSM student. Like other cities, STL has many many issues; but for me, it has been nothing more than a learning experience and a constant reminder of why I am pursing medicine..

I am a URM applicant as well, fyi. PM if you have additional questions.

So perhaps a more mundane question than usual but does anyone know where a forgetful interviewee might find a place to purchase a standard micro-usb (i.e. android) charger around Olin hall? Thanks!

There is a bookstore near the main courtyard (with the fountain -- pass through the big teaching building adjacent to Olin) and since there are tons of patient care buildings, I'd bet money that there are a lot of gift shops at which you might have some luck.
