2015-2016 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I hypothesize that they give out at least 2x the class size.

That is assuming the yield is 50%. 50% is a pretty good yield (Hopkins/Stanford are around 50% too) so it could very well be worse than that.

No need to hypothesize. The data is out there. 2.97x according to US NEWS.

So it seems like WashU has a lot more acceptances to give...

Is March the consensus?
I hope they have more to give, but it's important to remember how few people report on SDN (and also alot don't use Facebook). They could have given out a lot, or maybe not. Also a certain percentage will be MSTP seats.

Also, how accurate is US News in actuality? I can't imagine why schools would release those number unless they had to for AAMC (lookin at you, MSAR).

It's pretty accurate. I'd say more so than MSAR which seems to always lag 2 or more years

Just got an email from a student congratulating me on my acceptance with an invite to the facebook group but I haven't even received an admissions decision yet...should I be excited or did other people receive this in error too?

I just got it, but I also got the call for acceptance last week. Maybe check any missed calls/voicemails?

Nope. Nothing in my email/spam either. Haha I guess I'll find out when they're ready to let me know.

When did you have your interview?

has anyone heard rejection yet? post-interview i meant

For those who've been accepted, did you all submit your dean's certification form prior to receiving a decision?

I interviewed here and haven't submitted that form yet, so I'm wondering if that's delaying any decision for me or maybe will delay a decision..any thoughts?
thanks!

When did you have your interview?

Early December but it was MD/PhD which I learned was the reason for the confusion lol. They're separate committees so while the MD committee said yes (woo!), still have to wait for the MSTP committee's final decision.

You're awfully calm about this. I'd be freaking out and calling the admissions office for confirmation haha.

Haha that's kind of just how I always am. Never really been one to panic which is what definitely has kept me sane during this whole process.

Also yup! Made sure to get that in as soon as I got the interview invite. I don't think they can give you a decision until the form is in.

The Application Instructions document reads as follows: "Certification form(s) must be submitted on your behalf by an official at each undergraduate or graduate institution listed on your AMCAS application from which you have received or expect to receive a degree in addition to any other school in which you were enrolled and were involved in a disciplinary or institutional action. Print the form, complete the applicant identifying information, check the waiver statement and sign. Then deliver the form to the appropriate institutional official(s) that you indicated on the Supplemental Application. Original document with signature is required. No admissions decision can be made until these forms have been returned to the School of Medicine."

Interviewing here on Friday, but I have updates I want to send in. Should I email them in now or after my interview?

I personally wait until after the interviews, that way it is added information to consider at the final decision, rather than "waste" it now... i suppose in theory in might not matter, but that's my thinking anyway

Also wanted to ask, am I basically interviewing for the waitlist at this point?

I doubt it. It seems WashU has not accepted a full class yet. Though nobody knows for sure. Also WashU offers 3x the class size when all is said and done. My guess is you have a good chance.

For people who have interviewed already, what is the closed file interview like? Is it super structured?

I thought it was very relaxed and conversational. They paired me with someone with common research interests/in the same field I hope to enter as well. May have been a coincidence but it was nice!

I agree, it was very casual and conversational. Mostly just "tell me about yourself," type of questions. Plus they tell you who you're interviewing with a few days beforehand so you'll definitely have things to talk about. The half hour just flies by haha good luck with your interview! 🙂

What's the best way to get from the airport to Olin Hall?

Hello! I am a little worried because I haven't heard back from the school. Not even an interview. Is this normal? I know they are overwhelmed with many applications and student interviews right now.

This is normal. Only a select few applicants are invited to interview.

Hey all! Sorry if this has been answered already, but is there a dress code for the pre-interview pizza party?

I'm applying next cycle to this school and was wondering that if I've worked with a WUSM researcher for a long time and has a rec from her, would this be an auto admit/highly help my chances of getting in here? I have a 3.9 gpa/32 mcat..... mcat is a bit low, but i've published some research and have done quite a bit of work for this PI.

No they definitely is not "auto-admit" material, especially given that your MCAT is 6 points below the average. I read on SDN that the 10th percentile MCAT is around 34 so make of that what you will.

Doing research there certainly helps though (not only with the rec-letter, but also since it conveys an interest in the school/location).

But I think it would only slightly help unless your PI is like the dean of admissions (or dean of the school).

Given that almost all who have interviewed felt that the process was pretty chill, I wonder how much weight interview carries in making the final decision? (do they eventually rank everyone based on MCAT+GPA, and admit top 300 🙁)
