2016-2017 Stony Brook University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does this also apply to international students tho?
I'm not sure, I only know this about OOS students at Suny schools. Hopefully Stony Brook lets you claim residency after a year like the other schools do

daaang. 2 week turnaround? any stats for us thirsty peeps?

also can any current OOS/international student elaborate on the financials? the quote that was sent to me was 370k USD. i'm not sure if that's just tuition (which would be a tough pill to swallow) or tuition + living (which is slightly a bit better).
IS, complete late July, non-URM, LM ~ 75, good ECs. Research but no papers.

In the PDF attached to your acceptance email, you should be able to find a table with the fee breakdown at the very end. I believe the 370k USD also includes living expenses, based on the info from that table.

ah, i haven't been accepted yet. i was hoping this was the situation. thanks!

no. i've looked through the residency for non citizens and you have to have a special visa (like diplomat's spouse/children or something). student visas, nafta visas, etc don't count. h1b does which i could potentially fall under since i have an advanced degree but i'd have to get sponsorship + work part time first and i'm not sure how that would affect getting a visa after if you've used up your h1b eligible years.

What kind of grants or scholarships are here for accepted students especially OOS? And when does that come out ?

They all come out after the April deadline so you wont have that included in your decision making process. I would suggest you look on their website they list alot of scholarships most of which are need based

II this morning that actually went to spam for one of my emails!

Totally would not have seen it if I didn't look today.

LizzyM 72-73, OOS completed late October. Very thankful for this!
Good luck they have a ~55% post interview acceptance rate so your odds of being accepted are good!

anyone else notice that the alphabetical thread lists stony brook as "stony book"? i may be spending an inordinate amount of time refreshing this thread.

Does anyone know how late they interview? I was complete in July and have heard nothing since then, they don't silent reject do they? OOS

I *think*, according to previous years, they interview until mid-March. I was offered early March for my recent invite, so I think they are closing in on the last remaining spots.

Not sure about the silent reject.

confused as to when to show up...is it specific to each person depending on when our interview is scheduled for?
Yep, just show up according to whatever your schedule says. I like the way they do it. They keep the interview day short and sweet.

I made a Facebook group for accepted students if people want to join! It's called "official stony brook school of medicine class of 2021". Hope to meet you all soon

Curious why I haven't received any contact from them since complete in July

At This point im assuming rejection so Id prefer they just let me off the hook haha
Haha, yeah I feel that way too sometimes, but as I get down to the final four, I have been changing my opinion on this.

Just got the axe pre-II!! Complete in July! It would probably be too expensive for me (OOS) to attend this school anyways. Best of luck everyone!!!!! 🙂

Hi guys, I am a current MS1, so if any of you have any questions that you didnt get to ask on interview day, I'd be happy to help 🙂

Btw I interviewed in march last year and was accepted ~ 6 weeks later and many of my friends were waitlisted first. Hopefully that will give some of you some hope!

Good luck!

That's awesome to hear! Seems like a fair amount of WL movement (30% was what was said in the email). Fingers crossed!

so my portal says a final decision was emailed to me on friday but I didn't get anything. I guess this means rejection?

just some small pretty trivial things mainly pertaining to the day to day:

- how's the internet in the area? monopoly? decent speeds?
- is medicine considered an undergrad degree in the states? i noted that parking wasn't given to freshman undergrads with no mention of medicine specifically although dentistry was mentioned so i was wondering if i would be able to get parking.
- are there recorded lectures? my local med school podcasts all lectures for those that don't want to go to class/want to review the lecture.
- how many people live on campus in residence vs off campus roughly?
- i imagine the night life is pretty dead in stony brook since it's so small? do people train to new york to go out?

thanks!

Hey- Just got invited for a II woo! What are the chances of getting in if you're out of state? Are the chances as low as NYMC and Downstate? Thanks!

according to msar, less than 10% of oos applicants get an interview. if you get an interview, 13.5% matriculate. i would say at least double (if not triple) the number for the percentage for offers of admission.

-internet is great! Most people use Optimum and its pretty cheap and good. Stony Brook's internet is pure fire. Won an award and everything.
- everyone buys parking at the HSC and its pretty reasonably priced (hundred something for the semester - nothing cray)
- yes recorded lectures (mostly). Lectures are mandatory for Biochem (in block 1) which is annoying, but after that no one goes nor watches. It's weird coming from undergrad, but you'll get used to it and life will improve once you succumb.
- the vast majority of people live off campus unless they don't have a car, which is just a bad idea. Get a car.
- night life is surprisingly decent. Port Jeff is the main town with bars that turn into clubs in strange but amazing ways. It's lit.
Training to the city is annoying and expensive, so its mostly reserved for weekend excursions to vist friends/fam etc.

thanks for the info!

Hey New Yorkers, I'd love some transportation help! If my flight lands in JFK at 5:10 am do you think I will be able to make it onto the 6:12am train from Jamaica to Stony Brook? I'd be using the Airtrain to get to Jamaica.

Also, can I just pay with cash upon exiting the airtrain at Jamaica? Ditto for LIRR? I don't have a metrocard or anything and am not really familiar with how it all works. I' also obviously really short on time.

Thanks!

can't speak on being able to catch the train but there are ticket desks/machines at jamaica and you can also download the lirr app to buy the ticket that way i think. you could also pay on the train but it's more expensive. correct me if i'm wrong, i'm going off what i know from my trip out there.

If I remember correctly, you would need to purchase a MetroCard for the Airtrain once you reach Jamaica (it costs $5 one way plus a $1 fee per new MetroCard so about $11). The ride itself is around 15 min or so. Upon arrival to Jamaica, follow the signs for LIRR and go to one of the ticket machines where you can purchase the roundtrip LIRR ticket from Jamaica to Stony Brook. Hope this helps, and best of luck!

You'll be able to make that train, just walk quickly and pee midflight. Make sure you get on the Jamaica airtrain and not the Howard Beech train, buy your ticket (metro plus LIRR) when you get out of the airtrain then walk down the hall to the lirr. You'll be taking the Port Jefferson train (stopping at stony brook) and may or may not have to transfer at huntington to get onto it. There will be a sign with all of the lines/connections with their train platforms posted straight in front of you when you walk outside.
