2016-2017 University of Texas HSC at Houston (McGovern) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The reason why I sent an email in to them last week was because I was just told that I'm going to be a coauthor on 2 publications later on this year. It certainly does not make it look like I wasn't organized enough because I couldn't have known about it when I submitted the application.

Some schools are receptive to adding such updates (like your publications) to an application. Some schools won't take anything extra. It is hard to remember the differences in each school's application preferences. The response from this school tells you they are one of the schools that won't take in new information right now. I know it's frustrating. Scroll through the other schools you have applied to and see if some of them will take it

Can any current M1 elaborate on the URM initiative that some applicants I met that interviewed here discussed? I didn't really understand it much. I know that it's recruiting URMs, but I forgot most of the stuff I heard that day lol

+1

II!!!!!! So excited!!! Went to Miami for Ultra this past spring and so excited to go back. LizzyM 70, OOS (although I know it's private, but they still favor IS)

II in H-town?! Nice! When was your submit date and when did you get the e-mail from 'em? I know they sent mine super late relative to my transmission date.

Sorry guys!! Miami and Houston were in threads right next to each other, so I think I got that one wrong. :sorry: Don't worry, the Houston gravy train has still not arrived!

What are the interviews like (standard/conversational/stress)? What questions are they focusing on at UTH? Should I bring resume or just my shard dressed body?

No worries! Congrats on Miami! 🙂

We need to talk about yalls profile pics... it's really not working for me. They look too much alike and now yall are posting one after the other...

Hey y'all, congrats on getting IIs! I'm sure y'all are killing your interviews as well. I'm a current MS1 and I'm happy to answer any questions.

Just want to share that last year the application process was also slow, but I pre-matched despite interviewing Nov 12 (?). Feel free to ask any questions, especially on interview days. MS1s are really chill and we're happy to answer any questions

did u prematch on nov 15? how extensively does uth use prematch?

I am looking at last year's residency match list and counted less than 100 students who matched to residency programs. Isn't each class size well over 200 for this school?

Nevermind I'm stupid, I flipped the paper over and there a **** ton more. Please disregard my last comment.

Hey everybody! I received my II on 9/27 and my interview is on 10/7! Are there any current MS1s here that can confirm the interviews are mainly conversations and very laid-back? Any information would be much appreciated! If anyone is going to the social on Thursday night, I cannot wait to meet all of you!

Current MS1 here - I can confirm it is a laid back interview! We are trying to show you how awesome our school is! When I interviewed, McGovern was definitely my favorite interview day by far. I can't guarantee you won't get any tricky questions but I haven't heard of anyone who had stress interviews. Just be prepared to explain why medicine and why McGovern. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Congratulations on your interview!! Would you mind sharing your completion date?

It WAS really laid back! I loved the school and all of the people there! They are so friendly! I made sure to communicate in my interview why I wanted to do medicine and why McGovern. I am hoping to get pre-matched on November 15th, but I heard the likelihood is pretty low for pre-match offers.

My interview is next week! Did they ask you anything that caught you by surprise? Or do you have any tips in general?

Thanks in advance!

Congratulations! Not really, it was similar to a general job interview. I would say just be comfortable and have a conversation! Be yourself! Hope this helps!

All the dates available for me to choose were this week and next week.

It looks like this school really cuts it close with giving people advanced notice for their interviews! Crazy
