2016-2017 University of Texas HSC at Houston (McGovern) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
im honestly freaked the f out. i know it's unnecessary worrying but its much easier said than done

Congrats to you both!! My phone dinged 5 minutes ago, but it was my university saying there was no snow day today. Someone messed up there 😛

Lol they offered Friday as a date? That's insane
Pretty common to have Friday interview dates, actually. Some students schedule all TU/TH classes senior year so they can have Friday free for a travel day or interview day without falling behind in classes.

No, I mean they offered THIS Friday as a date. Two days notice is very little. Obviously Fridays are a normal day for an interview.

Are they sending out IIs to the high stats people right now? This is stressful:arghh:

Do II come out in one batch or do they trickle throughout the day? Basically should I stop checking my e mail for today? 😉

I received the UTH app under review on 8/22 so maybe some of us late-August people will hear back next week!

How are the apps screened? By date of completion? Does it mean something if people who are complete after me get an II?

Also, I feel like there's less texas ppl on SDN this year. For example, II's come out in batches, and yet only one person posted on UTH for the II and I think I was the only one for A&M...which makes me wonder where everyone else is hiding

Or the rest of us just haven't gotten interviews yet 🙁

No but we've all got similar stats so I think it's a matter of time for us. Sure the high Lizzy's will get II's first presumably but the vast majority are not sitting at 78s or etc etc and I think we still have a good shot!

But it's odd that I got a II at UTMB, which has higher LizzyM and not for schools that have a lower LizzyM average then. I wonder how they're doing this. TTEP is one of top choices, yet it's been radio silence from them 🙁 I have a LizzyM of around 70, so I'm probably average right?

According to MSAR, a LizzyM of 70 would actually be slightly above or on par with these schools matriculation averages. As long as you're in the top quartile of applicants stats wise you will most likely have a solid chance to at Texas state schools. Its important to note, however, the heavy emphasis that these schools place on GPA, so even if your LizzyM is similar to theirs an interview may not be granted if your GPA is significantly below their median.

I think A&M and Lubbock are more forgiving with lower GPAs. UTMB UTH UTSW all seem to favor 3.7+ GPAs. But it seems like with an MCAT of 31 or higher you have a chance to interview at a lot of these schools, even UTSW if you have a good shot. I know someone who was interviewed at UTSW and BCM with a 31 a few years back

you also gotta have some ECs though

My GPA is average but I have a pretty high MCAT. Which makes it even more bizarre that I got a II at UTMB, cause their gpa average is like 3.9999 lol Although I did get love from OOS MCAT loving schools so maybe UTSW will bite?

I have all the stuff you listed haha and I still only have 2 IIs in TX! I'm having much more luck OOS which I didn't expect at all.

Why is TTEP one of your top?

Why is TTEP one of your top?

I can't speak on behalf of Ginny, but I like them because they do pretty well on the USMLE board exams, primarily because their curriculum/teaching structure is really good. This is also evident in their matches, which aren't shabby at all. They're pretty good. 2o15 Match List had people find residencies at Hopkins, Stanford, UTSW, Baylor, Mayo, etc. Also, the opportunity to work near the border really exposes you to some interesting cases you may not see in a typical city hospital. It's a combination of good clinicals and good classwork prep.

To anyone who has interviewed here, how was it? I have one coming up.

It was all right. They toured us around the place, but we didn't get to see the helipad due to lack of proper arrangements and miscommunication. Not too bad in the interviews; they were pretty laid-back for me.

So there must not be as many people from TX on SDN this year bc at my A&M II, the students that were helping out asked us if we had been to other interviews, and quite few people said UT Houston. So much for my theory that they were behind. 😱

Damn.

Guys would it be weird or look bad to email UTH for a status check on my file? I emailed them last week with some updates to my application and they said they're unable to accept updates to my application until after an II so I should keep checking email throughout the fall...

I think it's still a bit early to check for an update, but if you do let us know!! lol

You would usually send updates after your interview, when you are waiting for an offer, and only if you have something new and significant ( an award, a publication, a major activity change). Sending one now just makes it look like you were not organized enough to include everything on your app. Sending things "just to say I want to go there" isn't usually helpful. If you get an interview it would give you something to talk about there - "since my application I have started doing xyz".

I wouldn't, at least not know. I think one of the hardest things I've had to come to grips with is that not every school that I'm qualified to go to based on my stats will send me a II. But apparently they have been sending out IIs, and I guess we're a smaller bunch than we though haha Can any current M1 elaborate on the URM initiative that some applicants I met that interviewed here discussed? I didn't really understand it much. I know that it's recruiting URMs, but I forgot most of the stuff I heard that day lol

The reason why I sent an email in to them last week was because I was just told that I'm going to be a coauthor on 2 publications later on this year. It certainly does not make it look like I wasn't organized enough because I couldn't have known about it when I submitted the application. Besides, I was asking if I should respond to their email asking them if they could tell me what the status of my application currently is, not sending an interest email.

I was just referring to asking them whether they could tell me where my app is in the process though

Wait did you not get the email that confirmed they received your application? Because if you did there's no way anyone but the admissions committee can tell you where your app is lol

From that email: "Your application has been received for the 2016-2017 interview season. As of today, the status of your application is UNDER REVIEW. Please DO NOT contact our office to check the status of your application. We will contact you by email with any status change. Please make sure TMDSAS has your updated email address."

Don't call them. The same email also said they don't take pre-interview updates.
