2016-2017 University of Texas HSC at Houston (McGovern) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From what I know, I think there are a few tiers in terms of stats: 1) Baylor, UTSW, Dell 2) Houston, Tech (Lubbock) 3) UTMB, SA, A&M 4) Rio Grande, Foster

I don't think Dell is at the UTSW/Baylor tier yet. Their incoming class only had a 32/33 MCAT average which is quite a bit lower than the other two. I also don't think Lubbock is quite as high as McGovern.

Has this school be slow with II invites?
If this thread is representative, they haven't sent out any IIs in nearly a month. I feel like the TX schools have moved soooo slowly in August. Let's hope September is faster!

I agree for the most part, but what makes Dell so weird is that they seem to emphasize stats a little less than UTSW and Baylor, and look specifically for mission (which I have no clue if I meet 😛)
And I think Tech is probably in the same tier as A&m in when it comes to stats from what i've read on previous Republic of Texas threads. Of course I'm waiting impatiently to hopefully get a II from there (I have very fond memories of Lubbock).

How is your app cycle going??
Yeah Tech is like a fringe school and yeah Dell is very very mission-based, but tends to go toward higher stats. It's going alright. Not too much new news.

I heard that UTSW had an MCAT average around 33. I'm assuming that's wrong lol. The MSAR listed the median as 35, but that's normally higher than the mean for schools.

At the rate Texas is going, watch everyone get all their IIs in December haha
That would be terrible!! Hopefully September and October. So, just to confirm, if I applied in early June and have not gotten a II at many schools, I am still not out of the running right? Or am I at a disadvantage?

Wait don't you have a few IIs? I confuse how many IIs people have on here haha
And not at all!!! I applied in June as well, and was complete according to TMDSAS mid July. I literally just got my confirmation email from UT houston like 2 weeks ago haha.
I was joking about the December thing, but I think we should start seeing more IIs now and in October. Of course, I have a fear that I won't get any more IIs and this is it for me.
The only disadvantage we might by getting later interviews is not pre-matching. From what I've heard, is that it's nice to get a II before November, but many schools don't pre-match heavily.

Doesn't MSAR now differentiate between accepted and matriculated? UTSW's accepted was 35 and I think matriculated is 34. The median is more useful than the mean anyway but even then I doubt they're very different. Dell just said their average was 90th percentile, which is somewhere between a 32/33, but I don't remember if it said matriculated or accepted. I imagine they lost quite a few accepted students to more established schools.

Dell is now not emphasizing the MCAT as much and I'm kind of bummed.

How do you know?

They said something about how last year their MCAT average was around 90%, but they're not emphasizing it as much this year. Idk the exact words, but that was the gist of it. I"m trying to remember where I read this.

Yeah I know you were joking about the December thing. And yeah I do have 1 IS (and 1 OOS), but would welcome more IS. I was just wondering if it is getting less and less likely for me to get a II as we get farther from my early June completion date.

I know someone at UTMB who had a LizzyM of around 69 I think who applied May and got 4 interviews in December. Radio silence from May-November.

Dell is a brand new school. It cant be in top tier when it just opened.

This is super encouraging actually. Yea I feel you guys :/ hopefully the next 2 months will look better for us!

I'm pretty confident that there are quite a few stories like that. SDN makes us think that if we don't get a II by the end of August we can kiss med school goodbye, when in fact we have 4+ months left! And don't forget that UTH is actually running behind of schedule!

Off topic: I have finished Stranger Things (bingewatched in 1 day oops) and was wondering if anyone has seen Narcos? Is it good?

Narcos is great. Don't know how it compares to Stranger Things, since that's next on my list. Currently watching the last episode for Narcos!

Awesome! Def will watch that next. And Stranger Things is probably the best show I've seen in years. I've never ever been very captivated by a show in the first episode, since most start out pretty slow.
I was hooked from the first few minutes. I felt like I had time traveled to the 80s haha.

Stranger things is awesome. Already anticipating season 2! I saw the first episode of Narcos, seemed really good but it seemed similar to Breaking Bad (which was amazing but mentally draining haha). Another show that is off the radar on Netflix is a British show called Black Mirror. It was definitely inspired by The Twilight Zone (like Stranger Things) but it's more of an anthology of futuristic scenarios where technology damages our society. Very, very good and will make you think (although it can get really weird sometimes). Plus, Netflix just bought the rights and will be releasing more episodes next month!

Are there people who still have not received an "Application Received" email from McGovern? I have not yet...

Originally they circulated an internal email that put us (amongst pre-matches and Feb. 1 matches) at 92% (accepted) in MCAT avg.; we lost a few to some great IS and OOS schools like UTSW, Baylor, and a couple others (e.g. Geisel, Perelman, the UC system off the top of my head) and our MCAT average for the inaugural class went to 88% (matriculated) which is about a 32 on the nose. I'll upload a picture of a fact sheet that has been distributed on interview days on the Dell application page.

I'm uncomfortable with how much silence all the TX schools are giving so far. lol

Honestly, it gives me some closure. I hope we all succeed (I can only take up one seat in medical school, so I'm not opposed to being altruistic here). With that being said, receiving a small amount of interviews in the wake of silence in the aggregate field is a positive way to look at it. I'm assuming schools will get their schedules up to par, organizations up the ante post Labor Day anyway. Noticing the vast majority of students who have gotten IIs have been LizzyMers of ~74+, our time will soon come. Eyes will pop up for someone who has a 3.9 and a 35 or a 3.7 and 37. This is natural. They can only take up so many spots both on schools providing a more well rounded class and the volume of applicants who have such credentials. Plus, these candidates are attractive OOS prospects to, helping us Texans out. All in all, just wait it out 🙂

My friends in med school who are MS2's, MS3's, etc. say that late September, October, and November is where the peak of action occurs and your e-mail inbox should sizzle up (hopefully!) with IIs. If good news happens, we'll feast by Thanksgiving. If bad news happens, then we'll just eat our depression away on Thanksgiving anyway.

I hope you're right! I've gotten more OOS IIs than IS, and so I'm concerned as to what is going on, esp since Texas normally finishes interviewing before AMCAS schools. I have 2 IIs that are before pre-match right now, so I'm hoping one of them turns into a pre-match acceptance lol

I'm unsure what is going to come first. The terrible new iphone I ordered or an II from a school

Whoa! You ordered the jackless iphone? You're brave haha. I would lose my headphones within a minute haha

Yeah I wasn't going to but my contract expires anyway so I figured I'd bite and sell back my 6 for whatever I could before it's value drops

Im still really hesitant about it

Do you think SDN is representative of all the applicants? It definitely has been quieter on SDN than past years, but I'm concerned our group just isn't as representative as past years' threads lol.

Def not all the applicants. I think SDN has a lot of the high stats people on it. But we know a lot of people who don't have those numbers and still get into UTH and other schools

Yea, I just feel like this cycle doesn't have as many applicants on SDN.

This is how I look at it. SDN makes up a tiny percentage of applicants. We think everyone and their mother is on here, but really most people don't make accounts and just lurk, if they even come here at all. However, on the TX threads at least, we have a sample of people that submitted their apps May, June, July, and August, which is representative of when the majority of total applicants submit. We also have people with LizzyMs ranging from mid 60s to 80 I believe. So I think we have a representative, albeit very very small sample of the total applicant pool. But yes, I feel that it's very quiet.

Generally speaking, the SDN applicant population is much more likely to receive II's and subsequent acceptances due to the overall greater preparedness compared to the general applicant population (higher than average LizzyM, better EC's, earlier applications, etc.). So in actuality, there should be a higher percentage of people who use this site that get II's and acceptances compared to the general population. I echo the sentiment that it is indeed very quiet in this thread, and also somewhat quiet in the rest of the UT System school threads.

I agree. As of now I've had more love OOS than IS. And Texas starts a month earlier than everyone else...

I haven't had any love OOS (unless Baylor counts since AMCAS?). I only applied to reach schools OOS and I wasn't complete until mid-August at the earliest most places so it's more likely that than anything. But I'm still surprised how slow it's been in TX, considering that it's supposed to move quicker. I feel like schools were really active June/July but once August hit everything's slowed down significantly. Hopefully SDN is representative and there's a flurry of activity soon!!

I think applying to reach schools OOS isn't a bad idea. Schools in TX where my stats are higher than their averages are places where I've gotten no love. Yet my dream school WashU (and one that will make sure I'm in debt for the rest of my life lol) offered me a II. It was a reach beyond a reach. I also got rejected from BCOM. I don't know what's going on anymore haha. I kind of just want us all to get our IIs and then fast forward to Feb 🙂

by bcom, you don't mean baylor right?

Any recent II? Getting anxious. Have pretty good stats, thought should have something from the school. Worried about rec letters.

How long have you been waiting? It can take some time. If you submitted TMDSAS in August, IIs have recently JUST started going out. I was submitted in June with no good news and still have hope. It's a long process. Just keep your head up!

This is such a true test of patience. It's frustrating though, because a lot of other grad program notify students early. Two of my good friends just interviewed and were accepted at Law school, and Optometry school normally tells you if you got in right after the interview. It's tough waiting for the interview, and then waiting to hear back :/

Also, looks like only 2 people on here got IIs from Houston. Granted it's a small sample size, but compared to the other schools, Houston is slower!

I'm another MS1 here at UTH. My interviewers here were great. They were part of the reason why I chose to come here! Very conversational. You should get their name when you check in in the morning. It might be a good idea to quickly look up their bio on your phone just to see what they do research/practice etc. It just gives you another topic to bring up in conversation if needed! I hope this helps. If you have another other questions, feel free to inbox me! There are a couple of us MS1's on here but, we many not check the forums very often!

Houston, in my and a lot of others' opinions, puts on the best interview day of all the Texas schools... It's definitely part of why it was my favorite! It's been a while since my own, and idk if anything is changing this year, but I'll give it a quick rundown. In the morning there is a breakfast with other interviewees and student ambassadors, during which you watch some funny and informational videos about the school/hear some high-ups talk. Then half go on to interviews (2 interviews - one has your entire application, the other one has everything except your MCAT scores and GPA). I had interviews in the morning, right up until lunch which is the BOMB. Fajitas and chocolate cake (which is famous across med school interviewees), sitting with professors and med students. Then I went on a tour of the school, Memorial Hermann hospital, and I believe St. Luke's hospital. Got to go up to the helipad and get in the care-flite helicopter too. Then a bus tour around the med center as well as student housing/the rec center. After that, I believe everything was finished. Overall an AWESOME interview experience...cant wait for y'all to experience it yourselves!

I just had my interviews here. The tour, the students, and the admissions-related faculty were really awesome. I enjoyed everything UT Houston had to offer besides its interviewers.

My interviewers were both volunteers, however they seemed unreceptive to having conversation. I tried every pathway I could to start a conversation, something mutual we shared, or something along those lines. They had not looked at my file before my interview, yet they left it up to me to maintain the flow of the conversation. Once I stopped talking, the interviewers would just stare at me... until I asked another question. When I ran out of questions, they just showed me the door.

I feel let down because I was expecting an amazing time. Everyone kept saying the interviews would be great and conversational. I wonder how impactful the interviewers' evaluation of me is in my file. I really enjoyed the school.. just had tough luck with the interviewers.

What I found in last years thread regarding interviews.

Damn. I knew there hadn't been much movement in a month but I didn't realize only two people have posted IIs here so far... that's crazy. They can start pre-matching in two months!

I really thought September would have more movement... but so far I've heard absolutely nothing this month. Come on, Texas!

One thing I did learn after my first TX interview this past week was about the JAMP program -- since they have to interview at every TX school but Dell and UTRGV, I imagine a lot of the earlier slots are taken up by them. So hopefully now that they should be pretty much done interviewing, there'll be more openings available!

@Iwannaknow thanks for the Narcos suggestion. Finished up season 1 in a few days and starting season 2. Can't believe that I can both love and hate someone as much as I do Pablo. And damn the President is a gorgeous man 😛!

Six weeks and counting since the last reported UTH II... :xf: for some movement soon!
