2016-2017 University of Texas HSC at Houston (McGovern) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nope. I coulda sworn it said we would find out before Match day. Is this true?

FYI very few scholarships are given out by the school, so I wouldn't expect one. Also, one person I know who got a scholarship didn't get it until May, so perhaps more are given out once you've already chosen the school.

There are outside scholarships in TX that you can apply to though! I know several people have done that. 🙂

By any chance any other IS applicants who had their interview early to mid Dec. hear back yet?
From what I read, they usually get back to you an average of 1 month. But I'm wondering if I should take into account that the offices are closed Christmas break before I start panicking (because I'm panicking now).

Between Dec 31 and Feb 1 it's going to go silent for in-state applicants. No need to panic. Be sure to consider all your interview schools and rank them on TMDSAS before Jan 20 at 5 pm.

Thanks, nerves are getting to me (probably the same with everybody else). As for the rankings, I finished them late Dec. and have been hitting the save button every couple of days (the worst feeling would to be accepted and find out TMDSAS withdrew me because something went wrong with the rankings).

I heard that they actually are giving out quite a few scholarships 😀 it is because a large chunk of the money McGovern donated was supposed to be used for scholarship purposes. I was also told that a few scholarships will be out before match, but most will come out by March/April, and they will all be out by June... hope that helps🙂

Why does it say class of 2021 then lol
It's a Facebook group page for the class of 2021 but has some first and second years in the group to answer questions and post school announcements. Once match happens it will be more of the incoming students, but right now it happens to be more current students. I think this is the same for all med school pages.

Does anyone know when you need to officially graduate from your undergrad before you can attend McGovern (and med schools in general)? I have one foreign language class in the summer that ends on Aug. 9, but the summer graduation paperwork deadline is on Aug. 8, meaning I'll most likely have to apply for the August graduation that is due on Aug. 18 instead. If I have to graduate before August, I can practice to take an oral test to waive the second language requirement, I just need an idea of the graduation requirement for the med school in order to make my decision.

Thanks in advance!

This is a question you should ask the school directly. It will be better not to take any chances and go with the second option of taking the oral test.

Looks like the semester starts July 31 (so orientation would be even earlier...) You definitely would need to finish before orientation. I would check with McGovern directly, but you should see if there's any way you can take this class earlier or not take it. You want your summer before med school to be relaxing!

Ok thanks guys. Looks like I'll be going with the oral test!

Since match for in-staters is tomorrow, hopefully after that they'll start sending out OOS acceptances! There's barely been any OOS activity at Houston compared to some other schools like UTSW and UTMB.

anyone match? Saw matches in every other school thread except for here and this school is match heavy

so when do we get an email saying we are rejected or waitlisted? Or we just assume we're waitlisted?

Just got an email from McGovern: "As of right now, you are currently on McGovern Medical School's waitlist unless you matched with a school that you ranked higher."

But I'm an out-of-state applicant, and we don't get in Texas schools with the match system. So did I get this email by accident or am I on the waitlist?

Sounds to me like they were too lazy and pasted your name onto a template. I'm sure you are wait listed.
I would call and confirm to be safe.

Lol, they are so lazy. I also got the waitlist email despite matching to my number one. Not sure why they would bother sending it to people who matched at a higher ranked school.

Got the same email, OOS. Like the other poster said, I just think they didn't want to write up a separate email.

Okay, so I guess I'll consider this email to be a waitlist. And I'll call tomorrow to confirm.

I only originally questioned it because there have been 0 posts about an OOS acceptance at McGovern this year, which is weird because McGovern matriculated 20 OOSers last year, which is a decent amount. Even UTMB, which matriculated only 6 OOSers last year had acceptance posts on the forum.

Just got the rejection email pre-secondary.

"Dear Applicant,

The Medical School Admissions Committee has completed its review of all applications submitted for the entering class of 2017. We reviewed a record number of applications, many from well qualified applicants. I regret to inform you that your application is no longer under consideration. The committee thanks you for your interest in our school and extends its best wishes for your endeavors.

Please feel free to contact our office or see our website for additional details if you are interested in attending our re-applicant workshop during March or your pre-med advisor for helpful feedback regarding your application.

OOS as well and got the email. Definitely interested to see what's going on here. Let us know what you find out! You the real MVP.

Got the same email, also OOS. Just to make you feel better!

Just got an email confirming that I matched to a higher ranked school, so I'm not under consideration for rolling admissions. ...duh? lol. I think they made a mistake with the first email tbh. Congrats to those who matched here and good luck to those waiting!!

Waitlisted, IS. Do y'all have an idea of when we could expect movement from the waitlist? I am going to check last year's forums.

Just got the rejection email pre-secondary.

Sorry to hear that. Did you get get a II? Mcgovern doesn't have a secondary, so you should've been set after the Tmdsas app.

It's only for reapplicants. They ask you for TMDSAS id IIRC

Waitlisted, IS.
By any chance anyone know how many people get an interview at McGovern? I feel like a student ambassador told us on interview day that they were able to pull everyone from the waitlist a year or 2 ago. Which is insane, since I read on the forums that some TX schools only pull off 10 people with a waitlist of over 100.
Was the student just misinformed or was my mind playing tricks on me? Did I even go to that interview? I'm so confused. :bang:

They interview close to 900 I believe. There's no way they pulled everyone from the waitlist. On our Facebook group, there's quite a few people, but some are current students. They matriculate 200+ people. Unless around 700 people declined to go here, I think that person was very misinformed haha. I have been told that they pull around 5-10 people each year

Also, regarding the waitlist, I believe everyone at UT Houston is waitlisted that didn't get in. So the waitlist wouldn't be 100 people. Edit: Realized you weren't referencing Mcgovern with the 100 waitlist thing haha sorry!

Thank you! I've been knocking my brain on this for over a week now and trying to do every calculation I could think of, only to say that "there's no way". This is a bit disappointing news, but at least the problem is solved.

Don't give up hope though! At every school I interviewed at, people kept talking about how they got off the waitlist 🙂 And remember, Baylor still has the majority of acceptances to give out, which will def cause a lot of people to drop. And OOS acceptances as well!

I am a current MS1 and I know a TON of people who got off the waitlist, don't lose hope yet!

Thanks guys! Hopefully I hear back from them March or early April so that I don't have to retake the MCAT that I scheduled. Anyone with fingers, please cross them for me! :xf:
