2017-2018 Tulane University Application

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No one in my grad program is applying. . . You all are the only ones that understand :drowning:. I am also glad that the neuroticism is not unique to myself. I mean we can't help but be neurotic when we are this close to securing a spot in a school that will lead to an extremely rewarding career.
What I really mean when I tell people I'm fine...

Freaked out
Insecure
Neurotic
Emotional

Keep your head up everyone!! When I applied last cycle, I had an interview at Tulane in December and was not pulled off the acceptance range list till May 1. Also, some people in my class were pulled off in June and July as well. Good luck!
Would you say most people were pulled in May though?

Has anyone heard about merit scholarships? I was told they'd be coming out in mid-April.

Are any of the waitlisted students here planning on applying to Tulane ACLP?

Did anyone who withdrew this cycle receive their deposit back? Or does anyone know if there are extra steps that need to be taken to get that $$ back?

Comparatively it looks as if more are withdrawing this year when compared to last. However, that must be taken with a grain of salt, but so as to maintain an optimistic outlook "it looks good for us!!"
I like the way you think! I really don't want to get my hopes up, but I have a good feeling about Tulane.

Has anyone else seen this stuff about the Louisiana budget cuts that will affect all medical schools in Louisiana? The main teaching hospital in New Orleans (UMC) most likely shutting down and cuts to higher education?

Well that's just great. My only chance at medical school this year and this happens. It seems to always be my luck.

yes, I have. You can do a quick google search to find more info. While it is unlikely they will shut down the entire hospital, budget cuts will still be enormous and in order to save the hospital, state legislature is proposing cuts to higher education. Seems like a lose-lose for med students in New Orleans 😵

Blehck, I wonder how much it will affect Tulane. While Tulane is still my top choice, it is making me reconsider a bit.

Oh my, me too. I like Tulane over my current state school, but this is definitely a thing of concern. . .

More so than the private school tuition? Lol
Call me a fool I just really felt at home at Tulane. I'm a military brat so I don't have a homestate and love to move around. 33K vs. 60k is psychotic though. . .uggh why must decisions be this way.

Let's not forget though that Tulane has it's own hospital even if UMC takes a hit. Keep those heads up 🙂

It's crazy that UMC Hospital has only been open for a couple of years and cost over $1 billion, and this budget cut is threatening its existence. I figure that the hospital is sorely needed and it would be a pity if it can't function to its full potential.

has anyone sent in a letter of recommendation? I sent in a update in February and my supervisor wanted to send a letter to Dr Morris

They have to at some point. How else would they know who to accept?

Maybe they have broad pools/categories where some people on the WL are grouped in tiers, where some are on the higher end of what they want to accept but may not have room for and such, and review from that pool first (which technically isn't ranking, at least, not individually). Maybe they do a holistic review or look back on everyone and it's an ongoing re-review/decision process (unlikely, but who knows). Maybe they look at the current demographic of their class, and re-evaluate who they can bring in to increase diversity, in which case ranking doesn't help them much. Maybe they draw names out of a hat!

Obviously all speculations, but I guess my point is that there's not just one system, and if they say they don't rank, it doesn't necessarily mean they're lying. I think diversity is a focus point for Tulane, so if I was a gambling person, I'd put my money on that (also important to note that if I was a gambling person, I'd also be largely in debt ... well, more so than current student loans).

Well, my opinion is, I think it's a really huge assumption to say that there's a ranking set in stone, and updates can't change that. They urge you to send them any updates that you feel will enhance your file, so if there is something then why not? But I also don't have much insight on the behind-the-scenes admission process, and you might, in which case that would be useful information!

I think they were definitely telling the truth when they put us on the acceptance range - that it is unranked. But judging by last years thread, they seemed to have a pretty good idea of who they wanted to admit by traffic day as all post traffic day acceptances were given the first two weeks of May.

Maybe not a rank, but they almost definitely have pools.

I would agree with this. I think at this point they already have a pretty good idea who they want to accept off the waitlist

In the interview packet they gave to us it explained their numbering system. Ie you get a score after your interview from 1-5 and if you are 3 or above you are acceptable. My guess is 5s pretty much all get accepted outright and then 3s and 4s either get accepted or placed on acceptance range. I think they are honest that they don't rank their waitlist, of all the schools I've interviewed at, Tulane was the most transparent about the process. But everyone on the acceptance range list also has a number 3-5 still attached to their application, which may inform how they review after May 1.

You should watch the documentary "Big Charity" (it's on Amazon) its crazy because UMC may not have actually been needed. There were so many sketchy political agendas after Katrina and revolving around Charity hospital. Really really sad if they have to close this hospital, even sadder when theres a chance Charity could have been reopened.

UMC is primarily for LSU system while Tulane has it's own hospital. Also UMC is brand new and they just spent a TON of money building it so they will probably do whatever they can do save it. Closing it down sounds highly unlikely, just as someone that lives here in New Orleans. Also because Tulane is private it's less reliant on the state budget decisions, which is why the tuition is what it is.

They ain't gonna close UMC. Louisiana politics has always been super corrupt, so this is really nothing new or surprising. We always gonna have poor infrastructure (probably). We thrive in the dysfunction.

Also remember there are two sides to every story as well as some creative license taken, so even though Big Charity painted an unpleasant picture and shined some light on even more unpleasant realities, the city as well as those that seek medical care here do benefit from having a new state of the art medical facility. Also Tulane has it's own hospital so I really don't think it affects the education you would receive at Tulane.

I actually totally forgot about the scoring system. It's been so long. That's pretty much tiered pools/categories though. They probably have a bunch of people with the same scoring depending on their numbering system. Well there's nothing I can do at this point but hope anyways!

does anyone know if this scoring system is based solely off of our interview or our application as a whole?
Application as a whole, it is a rating given by AdCom members and averaged.
