2017-2018 Tulane University Application

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Tulane focuses on fit more than anything. You need to meet certain GPA and MCAT thresholds to be eligible for an interview invite, just how it is. After that, your GPA and MCAT do not matter - the rest of your application will carry you through the rest of the cuts. Tulane doesn't de facto reject high MCAT scores i know several people who scored >520 - they just care more about if you'd fit in here once you meet their minimum GPA/MCAT criteria.

Do you know what exactly these minimum GPA/MCAT are?

Tulane definitely yield protected here. They probably thought you were much more likely to go to a top institution rather to go to their school. As an URM with your stats you have shots at top 30 schools. This is a good thing so keep your chin up!
Thank you for those kind words, I really appreciated that. Wish you best this cycle

Maybe it shows that Tulane really values MCAT scores. The GPA is amazing but maybe they want a higher MCAT for an OOS applicant. Idk if he was OOS but assumed it for the sake of my argument

My MCAT score is meh for an OOS candidate so it is probably not the case since I got an interview.

Yup they value fit, and service, not really scores, but that doesn't mean they wont interview people with top scores.

I'm debating on if I should stay with a med student or get a hotel room. Any advice?

I'm staying with a student. I think you'll get a better insight into the school. TUSOM also prefers for us to stay with their students. They really want applicants to fit into their school because NOLA has a completely different vibe and culture.

Stay alone if you like your own personal time in the morning or don't want any distractions prior to interviewing. I'm not sure how the placement is going to be but sleeping arrangements will probably be more uncomfortable than a hotel. I think if you have the opportunity then definitely take adv of it because when else are you going to be able to do this? The only risk is that you might be getting judged (who knows)...just don't be weird or anything and I think it's worth the experience

Student hosts don't judge and have absolutely no input into the admissions decision.*

Stay with a student if you want but don't feel obligated to do so. A bunch of people don't stay with hosts and they do just fine. It's personal preference.

*Caveat: unless you're super duper weird. But you're more likely to get dinged for that during your interviews than by your host so we'll figure it out one way or another.

Do you know how long after green checkmark one finds out if they got II or not?

Seems like some people have found out as soon as a day after, others have had a check mark for weeks and still have not heard anything.

By green checkmark are you referring to "application file complete" or "in progress"

Bet the Jets to lose their NFL game each week until you fill your bank account back up. You pretty much have all season for this, and with that roster, it shouldn't be hard to win.

LOL🤣
I know nothing about sports, but I'll definitely keep that in consideration.

Amazing advice. In addition, parlay a Patriots win and Browns+Bears loss and you can make some money quick.

Rejected 🙁 My stats were right at the 10%..ahh I really wanted to see NOLA again..🙁 but it's cool! Good luck you all!

Sorry to hear that... Good luck on the rest of your cycle! When were you marked as complete by the way?

Just looking at your handle. Are you a blues/jazz musician too? My interview is Nov 9th. We could always go busk the quarter!

I am! Hurray for a fellow jazzite 🙂 Hopefully we both get in, I'd love to jam with you. My music theory professor couldn't praise New Orleans enough for its boisterous jazz clubs. He went down for a gig, and nearly never came back haha.

Hell yeah. NOLA is def the coolest city in the world imo. What do you play? We should start a med school band or something. haha.

I have an MS3 friend at TUSOM who I've visited a couple times. Every night we went out on Bourbon street, our first stop was a live jazz lounge. Seems like a really fun place to study!

Hell yeah. I've been to 22 countries and nearly every state. NOLA is def the coolest city in the world imo. What do you play? I'm a blues player mostly (harmonica) but learning sax too. We should start a med school band or something. haha. I wonder if that factored into our IIs...

I think they have groups like this you can join! Another friend at UWash who plays piano just participated in a medical school classical music concert thing

Trust me, if I were to tell you my instrument then I'd be outed. Race, ethnicity, name, DOB, SSN :roflcopter:
But PM for personal details. Starting a jazz band at Tulane sounds wicked!

I just got a II this morning, but the earliest interview slot was in January. Did anyone else get an II today and see the same thing, no available dates until Jan? I just want to make sure I did not gloss over an earlier slot or make a mistake.

Just got an II, the earliest date for an interview on my calendar is end of January. Anyone else only seeing these dates also?

Same! I emailed them to make sure there wasn't a mistake, I'll update if I get a reply.

Ok I already got a reply, they said that those Jan interviews are the earliest available. However, they said they'd email me if any earlier slots opened up.

When did you guys get the green check mark?

Finally got a checkmark. Complete 7/26 3:30 PM. Must have gotten a huge influx of apps because people a week prior had theirs on about 7 days, mine took 22. Hopefully there's even some interview slots left.

Can any current MS comment on the MD/MBA program? Around what date does the 4 yr program usually start? So far, I'm seeing huge discrepancies (June 2nd, June 24th, August 8th)

Thanks!

73 LizzyM and 400+ non-clinical volunteer hours and just got that rejection, the first. I saw it coming but still stings...

☹️ Sorry. I'm expecting one too, I wish they'd just send it so I can stop looking at their portal...

If it helps, I don't think rejections are being given out based on high or low stats. Mine were certainly non-impressive.

What I think adcom is looking for this year, is (minimum stats obviously, but also) people who fit their mission. If you tell them you wish to help the underserved and have no proof of doing so in the past, they may reject you simply because they have no proof. If there is no evidence to back up your claim, they may not believe you to be sincere. My guess: if you have a seriously long trend of service to others, you should be fine. And I do NOT mean just research or clinical volunteering. Service to the homeless is non-clinical, and speaks volumes of the person you are. So don't worry about the green Mark and portal. Look over your application instead, compare it with Tulane's mission, and then decide on whether or not you have a chance at this school.

This honestly sounds great and I really hope they read my app soon lol....

I think they are just filling up II spots and getting more selective. 400 hrs is a good amount especially comparing stats. Their secondary isn't long enough to go into a ton of elaboration about service
