2018-2019 Stanford University School of Medicine

How does the quarterly tuition work? The quester tuition multiplied by 4 is insanely high..
You only pay full tuition for 12 full-time quarters, after which tuition drops to 20% the normal rate. As MS1 is only 3 full-time quarters, you hit the 12 quarter requirement during Q1 of MS4, and as a result only pay 1 quarter full tuition during that year. While you do pay 20% tuition over MS1 summer if you do research or a project during it, your research during this time will get funded at minimum by MedScholars (~$13,500, so giving you a net positive of 10 grand after the 20% tuition). There are also a lot of other opportunities to reduce the cost of attendance, such as TAing (which many people do, as it pays between 60% and 120% tuition per quarter), or getting MedScholars funding for research during the quarter.

The weirdness of the quarterly fee structure the school uses (and how much tuition remission comes from things like MedScholars and TAing) makes the cost of attendance seem far higher than it actually is - average debt on graduation here (at least for now lol) is actually the lowest in the US.

Do most (or all) MS1 students live on campus? Is on campus housing considerably cheaper than off campus?

Also is there a priority deadline for financial aid, and do you know when award letters are generally sent out? Or do you know if they will be sending us some more detailed info about financial aid soon, or not until we get our award letters?

Financial aid award letters go out before second look, and you'll also be able to schedule a one-on-one appointment during second look directly with one of the school's financial aid advisors to go over your aid. I'm not sure the exact date this will happen this year but for reference: I had my FAFSA/CSS done in (i think) Jan, received my acceptance during the first wave for acceptances (also Jan), and received my financial aid award letter during the first week of march. There is no priority deadline that i'm aware of. The financial aid office should be sending you more information shortly as well.

Stanford subsidizes housing costs significantly, and as a result 90%+ of students live in Stanford housing for at least the first two years. This isn't entirely on campus however (although about 70% do live on campus), as it includes several off-campus housing options. Oak Creek in particular (which is off campus) has a lot of medical students as while its "off campus" its actually closer to the medical school than EV/Rains (the on-campus housing options with the most medstudents, and is about a 10 minute bike ride away from the medical school). All on-campus and off-campus housing provided by the university are graduate housing so are proper apartments (not dorms), and tend to be quite nice - I stay on-campus in a 2 bedroom/1 bath apartment with one roommate in Rains and pay $1200/month, with this price including all utilities and internet. Off-campus housing provided by the university tends to be around the same cost (and also includes utilities and internet) and are usually extremely nice. There are also cheaper (as low as $800 if you're fine staying in a pretty small place) and more expensive options too (like the housing meant for law students that is super nice but kinda bougie lol).

The very best off campus non-stanford housing tend to get passed down among medstudents and are all extremely nice/cheap, but you tend to only be able to take advantage of this after a few quarters here since its hard to arrange prior to coming.

Is anyone else still in Pre-II limbo here? Legitimately unsure if they received my app.
Same here, seems so weird not to have received anything at all. When were you complete? Wondering if they just stopped reviewing applications received after a given date that was prior to the actual deadline

any post-interview rejection emails sent out yet?

anyone have any idea if the second wave has begun/passed? a bit odd that no post-1st wave Rs/WLs have come in (or at least reported on here)...

Dean said that decisions will be released until end of March.

Source: Interviewed there very recently.
Wow thanks for the info. Were they still speaking in 3 waves when you interviewed or is it kinda just all rolling now?

got the nice WL too lol. Anyone get the R or not hear anything? Or are they just waitlisting all non-As for now?

Pre-II R just now. Have been wondering when my R would come for a while.

Also rejected pre-II just now. Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back!

Finally got that pre-II R as well. Wish they hadn't strung us along for so long but it is what it is! Good luck to the rest of you!

Feb interview, WL'ed. I met current students who said they were accepted off the WL, but seems unlikely as I don't see Stanford as a school that has issues with yield...
That’s not true. Even the top schools have about a 30-40% attrition rate primarily, since they are competing with one another for the same applicants. I will likely be declining my acceptance soon, as I’ve been accepted to one of my top choices.

Thanks for clarifying, I stand corrected. Congratulations on your acceptances!

Decisions are separate aren’t they? Isn’t there a chance mstp still accepts?

I thought someone in a past thread mentioned how Stanford MSTP can only take from students who got in MD already (aka they have so many people who got in MD initially that they do not need to draw from the MD waitlist). I'll keep hoping but I already bought the tickets to a conflicting second look.

Also no one really got back to me about the updating them now that the portal is busted :-/

i would think the MSTP has some pull for those they really want but get waitlisted for MD...but i could be wrong? also, anyone know how many generally get accepted vs waitlisted vs rejected for Stanford?

MSTP students mentioned how if they ~really~ want you, they would sit in on your MD only admissions and essentially force them to take you. But this is also student speculation. idk might also consider if taken off WL cause huge MD -->MSTP potential at stanford

waitlisted. interviewed in january. is this a silent R or is there actually waitlist movement?

On the website for the MSTP the language is that an MSTP acceptance is “contingent” upon an MD acceptance, so I suppose you were right in your original estimation. Best of luck getting off the WL, I did meet MSTPs at my II who said they were first WLd

From looking at past years threads it is basically a rejection since they don't even seem to reject post II. Sorry to hear that you are in the same boat as me :/ I am also very disappointed.

Anyone from the 2/7 MD interview day hear anything yet?

Haha yea, i honestly don't know if I am a good fit and I got into another one of my top choices so not really too hurt by it.
I bet they have an internal MSTP waitlist (MD accepted but MSTP waitlist).

they don't reject post-II? isn't that surprising considering they seem to interview a lot of people?

Could I ask what school you're turning down Stanford for? Just curious. Congrats on an amazing cycle!

Has there been anyone who interviewed January or prior who has not heard anything at all? Or have they either WL-ed or A-ed all 'early' rounds at this point?

Has anyone received the email for the MD revisit google form yet? I filled out the one for the MSTP and they said I have to fill out the MD one as well when I get it but it has not yet come.

anyone know if stanford does a ranked WL? really old threads mention first priority lists

Are they still inviting people for interviews? Still haven't heard anything and been complete since August......
