2019-2020 Johns Hopkins

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Complete email today, photo and courses submitted 7/17

I’m confused, did you submit the secondary (essays) and THEN get a separate link for photo and courses? When I added Hopkins to my primary list a couple weeks ago, I got an email for the portal (gateway) that had the essays, photo and courses sections altogether

I think they just added the links for photo and courses after the initial secondary was sent out. So if you submitted it before then, you got another email to add your photo and courses.

Sorry for the confusion. Submitted secondaries sometime in early July and later received a separate link for the additional info.

Hello friends, current M3/M4 here sending some good vibes and moral support. Feel free to reach out with any questions - I'm no longer active on SDN, so forgive me if I don't respond super promptly. Wishing you all a fantastic cycle!

I have heard that JHU can be competitive (both undergrad and medical school). Do you find that to be the case?

Also, have you spent much time in the city of Baltimore? How do you like it?

For the adversity essay, should we use something different than a challenge we faced (even if it was our biggest one) and put in the personal statement?

Got an II a few days ago, can you tell me what the format of the interview is like? I know it's a traditional interview, but is it open or closed file?

When assigning pre reqs for biology, I used ap credit for both bio 2 lecture and lab. On their website they said ap credit is acceptable as long as upper level courses have been taken. Should i then list one of my upper level courses in the pre req section or is that something they will look for? Thanks

I would list it and make it clear. Good luck!

better idea for the when were you a minority prompt?

1. im an ethnic minority and ppl asking where are you really from??? how i realized that you cant base your identity of other peoples opinions. might be too simplistic?

2. as a club officer i disagreed with the rest of the officers' lowering the volunteering requirmenets for club members. they wanted to make it easier so more ppl would join/be active, i disagreed. in the end we got more flakes/less committed ppl and it kinda backfired

3. these are both ****ty i need to find something else

I would do 1 over 2 but it depends on how you write it.

Idk for me with 2 it seems kinda bad that you would be against making a club more inclusive. Can you find another example of a disagreement you had in your club?
i disagreed because they wanted to no longer require volunteering shift which moved us away from the club's original mission and more towards an informational/awareness organization. my main point through that is that i while i disagreed with their positon, i understood that they were concerned about the long term viability of the club and wanted more members.

does that work now? or u think no

Congrats on the II!! Interviews are open file - 1 faculty, 1 student (unless they've changed it). KNOW YOUR APP. I had questions about my favorite courses, my letter writers, my secondary responses, etc.

Note: there is a "fishbowl activity" where you sit with the other applications and student interviewers before y'all get plucked off one by one. Just act normal - be friendly, don't use your phone, but don't feel compelled to keep talking if you're a naturally quiet person.

Hi! I can't comment much on JHU undergrad unfortunately.
The level of competition at JHUSOM honestly varies from class to class - some gun, some snipe, some are honestly wonderful and collaborative. I think we all want to succeed, but we're naturally all type A, but we also encourage success among one another.

Baltimore is city of neighborhoods. I think the biggest adjustment was realizing that culture / "safety" can vary from block to block. Walking 1-2 miles south of campus can increase your rent by $1000/month. I live downtown, which can be a shock for anyone; that being said, I did undergrad in downtown Los Angeles, so the adjustment was fine and I appreciated being walking distance to everything (except campus).

When the website says finished after submitting the secondary, is there's anything else i should be doing other than waiting for the complete email?

really awesome advice thanks =)

Hi everyone,

For the secondary prereq portion, do you think it hurts to add a couple of more classes what they say is required? Or just it have to be exactly 8 credits for a category?

I’m doing it if one of the classes are from ap credit. Aka I added cell bio cause my bio 2 credit was ap

Anybody else still not receive a complete email after photos/prereqs 7/17?

Has anyone who's application portal says "finished" after the 17th gotten the complete email? I submitted the 29th and am wondering how much longer I'll be waiting.

I submitted sth like 7/20-21, did photo and prereqs same day, and got the complete email 8/6.

Just interviewed. Honestly my favorite so far. Love the atmosphere and the whole college/molecule student body system.
By the time I get to my first interview you'll already have attended as many II's as I have in total xP

Glad the interview went great! Did you stay with a host? I am planning to fly there the day before and leave the morning after, but the pamphlet they sent in the invitation says only one night's stay is permitted. I'm kinda broke after sending in secondaries (aren't we all....) and am trying to save some dough by avoiding hotels.

You can stay one night with a host and one night in an Airbnb. I did this for another school.

Stayed with a host that I knew from HS who was very friendly, but from what I head all the hosts were EXTREMELY friendly. Honestly, since you already have to email them, you can ask in the email if they would mind allowing you to stay the extra night. I have a feeling that, most at least, would have no qualms. If not however, follow what emrbyonal said and get a airbnb the next night.

I stayed with a host too (Nancy/Daisy, MSIIs) and had a great experience! Their place is very close to campus and they had a couch that could be converted into a queen sized bed! I also went to the Greeter's event the night before and had a lot of my questions about Hopkins answered by current students. I felt well-rested and prepared for my interview the next day. Plus it was nice that it started late at 11am!
