Also, with regard to earlier post, Kaiser may be a large company, but they are truly anti status quo. Globally capitated payment and integrated healthcare is a big attempt at change

But when will they send rejection emails? Holding most on silence is pretty much the status quo. Heck, it's like matching on Tinder and never hearing back or getting ghosted.

Still not sure because being part of the first class is very risky IMO. Thanks for the extra info on Kaiser — I’d love to hear more about other opinions on Kaiser as I consider this. The other thing I didn’t mention in my last post was that Kaiser also seems to suck at covering and prioritizing mental health, and I’m also considering psychiatry. Not sure if it is appropriate to conflate the health system with the school but that’s all I have to go on right now.

Sadly you are right! In CA, they have psychiatrists leading digital (phone call + app messaging) prescriptions for low risk patients. You are evaluated and prescribed initially by a psychiatrist (over the phone) then your progress is managed by a pharmacologist (also over the phone). Their psychologists in the Bay Area have been on strike for 2+ months and book at least 6 weeks out. I heard their mental health business model is to have all clinicians take 6 new patients a WEEK, regardless of how many patients they already have. So they are concerned with volume and market share I guess because even if you were motivated to see more patients to solve more problems, they so clearly can’t be helping most patients since many require at least a monthly appointment...


Not sure how it’s going in other areas

Thank you for explaining this. This was my biggest concern, as I’m interested in doing more combined psychodynamic/psychotherapeutic psychiatry, and I’ve heard the East Coast is a bit better for that. I also keep hearing about Kaiser psych clinicians striking, and it just doesn’t sound like the most supportive environment. I remember one time on reddit someone tried to make the argument that frequent strikes meant that the clinicians have a good relationship with Kaiser and I was like...what is this mental gymnastics haha. Nothing seems to have changed since a year ago when I heard about the strikes. I’m pretty dedicated to psych as a specialty so this is probably the strongest argument against why I shouldn’t go to Kaiser so far.

II Christmas Miracle! Anyone know when Kaiser stops interviewing or how much of a disadvantage it would be to interview last? There's only one date in mid-February and one in late-January.

edit: Found on their website last interview is in March

Oh whatttt congrats! I thought in the portal it said that they finish interviewing mid feb but youre right, the website is now updated to march. If you dont mind, when were you complete and what were your stats? To give some of us hope during the holidays

LizzyM around 71. Instate ORM. Completed relatively quickly probably mid-July.
Honestly wasn't expecting anything from Kaiser haha but really hope I can get in now. Thanks!
 
I want to add that I recognize I’m in a privileged position, and I don’t mean to make any of my comments sound ungrateful about the opportunity given to me by Kaiser. I still think that weighing all of the characteristics and consequences of each medical school is really important instead of rushing headlong into a choice based on a single factor (like money or location). I’m still really excited about this and hopeful that the rest of you receive good news too!

Not at all

Coming from a family of jaded physicians (many who feel that medical school is “a means to an end”), I am super glad future doc’s think through the application process this thoroughly. It speaks to a level of maturity and ensures your choice will have the greatest impact on your growth leading into your clinical career.

Definitely stands out among the neuroticism that is all over this site, too!

PS I say that seriously as someone who has one interview and withdrew from the school. Fit is so important for you (and your future patients)

I believe Stanford and Wright State are pushing for this curriculum as well. But I do know Vermont is one of the pioneers for this method of learning, by next year they said that all learning will be in the active, flipped classroom.

This a good article about it - Flipped Classrooms: Scrapping Lectures in Favor of Active Learning

I am a teacher and this is how I teach. It’s incredible to see and the kids love it. Professors become facilitators instead of lecturers.

The at home stuff can range from traditional lecture videos or reading a case to be used in class or just textbook reading. It varies by school. I’m not sure what Kaiser’s prep looks like at home but I think it’s probably case prep since they repeatedly say they have no lectures

It’s A LOT easier to implement with a new program / new professors because flipping your teaching style entirely is a lot of work. So there aren’t a lot of schools that are designed this way

Btw I think it might be good to move the discussion to the premed forum, not a specific allopathic school forum board since I'm sure others would also benefit from this info and discussion, and that the conversation might stray from talking only abt kaiser related topics here.

Hey everyone, I have an interview coming up in the next 10ish day and I was wondering what resources people found to be useful for the MMI portion of the interview process. Also, how much walking should I expect for the interview?

I think the most helpful thing would be to practice responding with MMI timing with prompts (just google them). They had us sign an NDA so don't think we can say too much, but it was not as stressful as I thought it would be.

It's very little walking since the building isn't done yet. You are in one room for the majority of the day, one room for the AR/VR demos, and then rotating for MMIs, but there isn't a tour. If you're thinking about wearing heels, you'll be totally fine--I did.

The website says march (dont know early or late) but portal says mid feb. So im assuming they still wanted to interview more ppl
 
are acceptances the only decisions that are provided at this time? Or have there been post-interview R’s and WL?

Would be a good X vs. X post where you could flesh out a pro/con list. I'd almost certainly choose UCSF though since it's an unknown how strong your matching potential would be (likely good-great but no data).

They are not peers. You go to one for prestige and the other to be a doctor with no debt. Did they offer you money for living also?

In a similar position and currently leaning towards Kaiser. While I can see being part of an inaugural class would have downsides, the fact that their success completely hinges on your success makes this such an interesting opportunity. With KP's resources and the faculty they have in place, it's hard to imagine another school that would work as hard to give you some incredible experiences and make you an excellent candidate for competitive residencies.
