2019-2020 Mt. Sinai (Icahn)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It says through early May which is the wl period though

Maybe I’m wrong, but the WL period should extend beyond early May. Most schools still have a few spots into June. This might be a hybrid deferral/WL deal.

Also A!! Random but does anyone else have a typo that says "The Icahn School of ~Insert Name Here~ at Mount Sinai" in blue below the school logo and above the main part of the letter lol. Still thrilled but found it funny haha

Deferred, interviewed early/mid December. Did anyone with a December interview date get an A?
Did you get the email stating, “while we are not prepared to offer an acceptance at this time, your app is still being considered by the committee”?

I did. I interviewed in December. Has anyone in December been accepted? Sounds like most of us have been deferred.

I think this defer is a pseudo wl cause they’ll now take ppl from their post jan interview dates. We will prolly not hear anything more from them until post April 30 when ppl have to drop their acceptances

I believe being deferred is different than being waitlisted, but I am not sure what the timeline is to hear back based on previous years

Deferred, interviewed early nov. It sounds like this is new this year- I believe it is different from WL.

They most likely want to interview everyone before giving solid decisions. Thus, I am thinking I won’t be hearing anything till March-April.

no. straight up rejection, which makes this feel incredibly worse, since it looks like i'm the only one
I am sorry to hear that. I hope you get into a great school!! It is somewhat surprising since Sinai usually waitlists people post II as opposed to rejecting them but this could be a new trend they’re starting which is to the better I think as opposed to dragging people for months and finally rejecting them. I hope you the best in your future endeavors.

Don't worry buddy I'm there with you. Also not sure what exactly happened but I felt the interview went well (even better than some schools that I got in to) so I'm just not going to beat myself up over it.

Also got the deferral email. Seems like a lot of dec interviewees did

Is “deferred” counted in 3 WLs with traffic rule?

Now I may be wrong about this, but I think that a deferral is different than a waitlist, or else they would have just straight up waitlisted you all. BU does something similar where they have a wave of acceptances in December or January and defer a majority of later interviewees to a later decision day. I think that you’ll hear back about the status of your application before the PTE deadline.

So I have spent a long time yesterday reading the 2017-2018 and the 2018-2019 threads in order to understand if deferring students is a common thing sinai does. What did I find?

- 2 years ago they deferred people but last year they waitlisted them right away.
- In the past 2 years (from what I read), no one was rejected post interview within the decision release monthly dates.
- Most people that were deferred 2 years ago ended up on the waitlist.

Why defer people this year and not directly waitlist them like last year? I am thinking that they want to see all of the interviewees first then make decisions monthly and choose some candidates to accept from the deferred pile. Another reason could simply be because being “deferred” sounds better than being “waitlisted” especially with lots of us being good applicants that may already have other options. I do think that lots of the deferred people will be waitlisted. Why is that? I think it’s due to the fact that schools won’t be able to see which schools the candidates got accepted to till the end of April. By then, waitlist movement usually starts and schools get a better idea of who to accept/reject. Overall, the process definitely sucks and is very stressful since some of us have been waiting for 4 months to just hear that we need to wait another 2-4 months. I guess it be like that sometimes. Good luck y’all.

In the email, they said rolling admissions, so it looks like they are sending acceptances as applicants get reviewed and voted on by the admissions committee. I don't think there's any need to speculate if this "deferral" means you're waitlisted or not. I think it just means you haven't been reviewed and voted on completely yet. This is evidenced by the fact that everyone on here who interviewed in December got the "deferral" email. I'm expecting they will regularly release more As (perhaps on a weekly basis, or at least depending on how frequently the admissions committee meets and votes to A or R). At worse, this just means 2+ "waves" of As. We just had the first wave of As for people who interviewed before sometime in November, and we'll have another wave down the line for people who interviewed after that.

Hmmm I don’t totally agree since one student who is in the admissions committee was posting here and he/she explained the process to us. They mentioned that the voting is done the week after the interview if I remember correctly. In regards to the December people that is a possibility, however, I was interviewed in September and I got deferred. I also know of others interviewed in September and deferred. Therefore, I wouldn’t say they didn’t get to us.

I interviewed in October and got deferred as well. I don't think this is a waitlist though, but it's not truly "rolling" by the looks of everything. It kind of sounds like it's in between

So, if this "continued review" isn't a waitlist since it looks like they might still be reviewing applicants, would this be an appropriate time to write a letter of intent? Thoughts?

On my interview day they said they appreciate letters of intent. I was accepted but did not send one.

Did any of you who interviewed not receive a confirmation email after you scheduled your interview? My interview date shows up on my portal, but I never got an actual email confirmation. Is this normal?
