2019-2020 UT Houston ( McGovern)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats guys! I'm seriously kicking myself. I had primaries done early June and I started "pre-writing" but didn't get much done for weeks and just submitted a few days ago :/

Would have been nice to already have an interview date set up for my top choice but alas the cycle is long so

Rest easy. I didn't interview until early November and still pre-matched. It's not about when you interview, but how you interview.

I seriously have to keep telling myself this over and over again

It's about making an impression, not being the first foot in the door. Is it to your benefit if you interview earlier in the season? Sure..is it going to make or break your acceptance? I'd err on the side of saying no. It's better to have a memorable interview and to make an impression later in the interview season than to interview in August and be a dud.

tldr; Do what you can on your end. Don't worry about the things out of your control. When your interview comes around, kick ass. Leave everything else to the powers that be.

Congratulations! Incoming MS1 here, happy to answer questions you may have.

Congratulations! McGovern is my #1 choice, and I interview with them next month! Any specific questions I should prepare for? Anything specific I should highlight in my interview that McGovern truly values? Do you think it is appropriate to mention they are my top school at the interview?

You’ll soon see that interviewing at McGovern is very laid back. They’re not likely to grill you with questions about “the most pressing problems in healthcare” or things of that nature. Be sure you know your application and secondary essays well, as they will likely discuss them. I don’t think there is any issue mentioning McGovern is your top choice. I did the same thing in my interview.

Best of luck! See you here soon.

Did you even look at the application process on their website? I'm not MD/PhD but even I went and bothered to take the time and look, and found the answer to your question.

I saw the secondary online but applied both MD only and MSTP. My secondary received via email (Complete 6/15) was the same as the one on their website, except for the "why MD/PhD?" question. Should I fill out the extra essay and send it in separately? They don't explicitly state to, but this is my top MSTP choice and I really don't want to screw anything up.

Hop on the MD/PhD questions thread over here: *** 2019-2020 MD/PhD cycle - Questions, Comments, and other things ***

There are some helpful posters there who have just completed a cycle, and @Fencer is an MSTP director who answers questions very directly

Can someone confirm that UTH sends secondaries to MD/PhD only applicants? I didn't submit anything through TMDSAS only AMCAS, and haven't received a secondary.
Or is it like Baylor that we access the secondary through the website? Thanks!

@drdreyman and @james_harden13 did you see this on the TMDSAS site?

It appears that for MD/PhD you will use the AMCAS application, rather than the TMDSAS.
  • UT Southwestern Medical Center, UT Medical Branch in Galveston, McGovern Medical School, Long School of Medicine, Texas A&M HSC College of Medicine, and Texas Tech HSC-Lubbock accept applications through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) for MD/PhD and JD/MD program applicants only. Non-TMDSAS Applicants who are extended an offer will be added to the TMDSAS database for statistical and reporting purposes.

Yes I filled out both the TMDSAS and AMCAS applications, and they sent me a secondary email for the MD only application, which is essentially an online version of the pdf linked above, minus the last essay. The website states "Applicants submit the (1) AMCAS application, (2) TMDSAS application, and (3) three letters of recommendation" with no mention of the secondary. The secondary is only mentioned under the "To apply only to the joint MD/PhD Program:" header.

I am pretty certain that they do not send you anything if you are MD/PhD only. You need to fill out the secondary above.

Congrats to all those with II ! really hoping for one from here, my top school as well !! looks like first batch of those invites were sent on 7/17? Anyone receive one after ?

Following this thread to round out my top 3 Texas schools. Congrats on the interviews! No II for me yet, but I didn't submit my secondary until 7/09.

I'm OOS applying to their MD/phd program, just wanted some clarity,
if you didnt apply through TMDSAS, they will not send you a secondary invite, you have to just download from their website and mail your secondary to them?

Hey guys. So I made up a patient's name for one of my secondary questions but I forgot to mention it is a fake name and the version with quotes around the name wasn't my "final" version i submitted. with all the copying and pasting between word/docs/notepad, i guess i lost track of which changes i made where and messed up.

i was wondering if this is something I should send a quick email about/if that would even matter or if i should just leave it. fortunately i don't mention much of anything other than i met him at a pharmacy. No conditions/no payment info/no other names/not even a location (although they could prob get this off my application)

I am not sure HIPAA applies to those who are not in medical profession. If you are a pharmacist, then it can matter.

I have never seen shadowing that didn't require a written confidentiality agreement. Although the volunteer may not be held liable, the organization would be IMO.

You could email an update if you are that worried about it. McGovern has an extremely friendly admissions department. I have actually called and spoken to them about another issue and they were very accommodating. @clutchtho

I was a technician, so i think it would apply to me.

however i read it a couple times and in essence all i say is his name and that he vented about "medication concerns" without getting specific at all so I think i will just leave it as i don't think it was a HIPAA thankfully

Is there somewhere in the portal where you can see your letter status? Did y'all receive an "Application Complete" email after the "Secondary Received" email? I submitted the secondary 7/6 but my letters weren't transmitted until 7/8

Our interview season will run from late August through mid-January. If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted via email or phone to schedule an interview date.

wait, do you have a 4.0/528? lolol that is WILD

So anymore II after the ones on 7/17?

If I remember correctly last year they seemed to give out rounds of interview every 2 weeks. It’s been a second since I was being neurotic and went through that thread though.

I'm interviewing here on 8/23, does anyone have insight on the interview day?

Did you receive a schedule? Most interview days include information sessions, 2 interviews, lunch (?) may be a walkaround medical center etc.

I just received the general info from the portal. I know we will receive something on interview day, just curious if there was more detailed information out there.

Their standard format is usually presentations, tours, interviews, lunch etc. It is possible they are doing them in smaller groups who are rotating (a group is watching presentations while another being interviewed while a third group on tour - only lunch being the constant).

It begins with a light breakfast/coffee followed by a brief presentation about McGovern as a school, the curriculum, etc. Following the presentation you will either: A) Proceed to your interviews, or B) Have a campus tour. After the morning session, you will have lunch with faculty and staff. When lunch concludes, you will then do whatever activity you didn't do in the morning (e.g. You will interview in the afternoon if you did your tour in the morning, and vice versa).

Awesome, thanks so much. This is one of my top choices, eagerly looking forward to interview day!

Hi! I just got an interview invite 7/31 and it says to pick a date within 2 weeks of invitation. The closest to that is 8/16 but I will be out of town. Would it be acceptable to schedule for the next available date, 8/23?

You can pick any date they offer you, what they mean is to pick any date within the next two weeks so that they ensure a quick response from people they are inviting now

Congrats! When did your app transmit and could you share your stats?
