2020-2021 Eastern Virginia (EVMS)

II just now for Wednesday! IS, LM 71. So excited but definitely a quick turnaround for prep! Any tips/what to expect? Is it open or closed? And it’s 2 on 1 right?
Mine was 3 on 1. research faculty, retired doctor somehow associated with the school (his kids went there and some other capacity that didn’t involve working there but I don’t remember what it was), and a student.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love this school, and part of that was from the interviewers. They were awesome, incredibly laid back, and made me feel at home. Yes, it was a panel but don't let that freak you out it's really just more people asking you questions and definitely not what I would consider to be more difficult than a regular one-on-one. Can't divulge certain questions due to an NDA but be sure you read up on who you are as a person, why EVMS, and your application as a whole as it is partially open I believe. Good luck!
Thats interesting because mine was the least laid back I’ve had, my interviewers just looked at me like statues, asked me a lot of ethical what-ifs, and just made me feel so awkward during and after. If I already didn’t love the school for other reasons, the interview would have turned me off from this school. I also wished I would have gotten a question remotely similar to „why evms?“.
What NDA did you sign? I didn’t have to sign one?

While I didn't have to sign one, pretty sure they say you aren't allowed to divulge the questions asked. Or maybe that was a different interview and I've forgotten. Either way, I would still rate it as my best interview experience yet.

Top tier waitlist today, OOS, interview 1/29! The lady said top tier so quickly when I called I almost feel like she didn't even really look haha.
I had the same experience lol, i think they might have a list in front of them ready because they know people will call

You’re all calling to find out? They aren’t emailing you?

I also called, but they waited a bit to tell me that I was OOS top-tier. Granted I called the morning after, so that may have been the difference.

^^^. They email with Waitlist Notification, then we can call to find out. Also, based on last year, I think most applicants who have recently been interveiwed are going to receive waitlists at this point since last year it seemed that way. But I may be wrong.

Accepted today, interviewed 1/15. Does anyone know if they are true P/F?

P/F. Internal rankings into quartiles are used in residency letters (1st semester does not count), though have heard from residency directors that they could not decipher what the quartiles meant (which one is top, mid, low). H/HP/P/F for clinicals.

Are people with March interviews just being considered for the waitlist or is it still possible to get a straight acceptance? I’m in-state and have heard that being accepted off of the IS WL is a crapshoot.
What do you mean by crapshoot? It seems as if there’s pretty good movement here historically for both the IS and OOS WLs

OOS has more movement - people with multiple acceptances are more likely to choose in-state tuition, so IS typically sees fewer people dropping acceptances -> less movement.

Any thoughts on if an early April interview date is eligible for an acceptance, or is that basically just interviewing for the WL? And has anyone been able to get an earlier date upon request after initially scheduling for a later date?

Tough answer. Schools must fill all seats by March 15th (Note: they can still over-accept). However, multiple acceptance "deadline" (not enforced) is April 30th, with April 15th applicants are supposed to be down to 3 acceptances (also not enforced). If it takes 4 weeks to get a decision, it is possible that a seat opened up and you can get accepted right away (assuming you fit the demographic desired and are at the top of the list).

VCU reviewed my file in October and never even reached out for an II and my LM is 77 with good ECs, volunteer, and LOR. UVA hasn’t even looked yet. Maybe year has been the wrong place, wrong time? I just want to help bridge the gaps in my state but I’m stuck here refreshing and waiting. Stay strong peeps
My goodness, that's shocking - I hope you're having better luck outside Virginia this cycle!

Originally, I thought this would be an advantageous cycle to apply for those with apps ready to go by AMCAS opening day (ie no delayed MCAT an such) but it seems like the increased apps this year + all virtual interviews has made it quite the opposite. I'm getting pretty sick of uNpReCeDeNtEd cycles since I last applied in 2018-2019 where the new PTE/CTE guidelines made everything incredibly chaotic.

I called their office. I am thinking of reaching out again because I want to begin getting an idea of which schools might be giving silent R’s.
I called their office earlier this week. They said my app was "still under review", IIs are still being given out, but all decisions will be communicated to all applicants by the end of Feb.

There seems to be a misunderstanding in the med school admissions community as to what exactly a "silent R" is. One of the reasons I love EVMS is that they wont waste your time and money with a secondary app if they feel you're not an appropriate fit. There are an abundance of schools that will screen your secondary early in the cycle but hold off on a formal R until like Feb/March - that's a silent rejection and it's unfair to applicants to string them along with hope.

for accepted students to learn from my mistake - check your EVMS email!! I got a scholarship opportunity there that I missed the deadline for because I hadn’t been checking it regularly rip

A little late but got the A on Wednesday!! I interviewed last year and absolutely loved it, so I was super bummed when I got put in the middle third of the waitlist and eventually had to start a new cycle. I still can't believe I was actually accepted!!! I interviewed 1/20 and definitely felt like it was my hardest interview, and I babbled a bit at the start.

Fingers crossed for everyone!! I hope I get to see you on campus!😉

Congrats! Stats?

Are they still sending interview invites? also thoughts on sending pre-interview update letters/do they accept them?

Not sure if they are still sending interview invites, given that it's the beginning of March I doubt it, but I don't know for sure. They do accept update letters and I think it is perfectly fine to send one if you would like to as long as it is of quality. I believe you send it in a pdf titled with your name and AAMC ID to [email protected].

For those who have received decisions post-interview - how many days did it take? I'm sitting at 28 days and getting angsty. This is my last hope.

It took me ~35 days post-interview to hear back that I was on the high-priority waitlist and I am OOS. I heard back on a Thursday so I would guess you might hear back either this R or next.

It is also unfair to take the app fee and not even look at or rank the app. I think this is a problem that needs to be addressed by AMCAS and others.
I wish. This process is laughably brutal compared to all other app processes (law school, MBA, etc). When I applied to PhD programs it was 1) app submitted in November, 2) II in Dec, 3) interviews in Jan/Feb (all expenses paid btw!), 4) acceptances in Feb. In contrast, it's somehow become an accepted practice that applicants may have to apply to multiple, overlapping cycles (for those of us on waitlists) - that's inexcusable and I have no idea how it gets fixed (amongst all the other problems in this process).

Unfortunately, I don't see AAMC taking any central leadership role (despite that being their purview) beyond administration of MCAT and ownership of AMCAS. Their abdication of CTE/PTE enforcement was in response to a lawsuit a few years ago and the result has been even more chaos to an already chaotic process.

Can you elaborate? My interview is on Friday!
I don’t know about the other person, but this was the hardest for me as well. It was the least conversational, the interviewers were the least friendly, I was asked what were in my opinion the hardest ethical questions, etc. easily my least favorite interview to the point where if I wasn’t interested in the school for personal reasons, I would have been turned off.

Yikes- Thanks for the heads up!

Interesting, because this was my first interview and was very relaxed and conversational for me, me and the interviewers laughed and got off track multiple times and it really left a positive impression for me about the school. Maybe the interviewers vary a lot or they're simply burnt out from interviewing. Sorry to hear you guys had bad experiences!

It was hard for me too and then I got in, don't overthink it

Have any of the accepted students managed to get access to the financial aid system? It keeps giving me code IA
