2020-2021 Geisinger Commonwealth

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got curious while reading last year's geisinger thread: To those who interviewed already, did you faculty interviewers say something similar to "see you next year" or "I would love you to choose geisinger"? Many interviewers heard that and got waitlisted apparently, so I am now wondering whether geisinger just has too nice interviewers LOL

Anyone who interviewed (particularly for the PRIME program), could you go over how the faculty/student interview went? I've heard that they grill you with tough questions. Would appreciate any advice?

It wasn’t too different than any other interview I’ve had. I didn’t mesh too well with my faculty interviewer but I had a great conversation with my student interviewer. Most of the questions were standard med school interview questions

Hey y'all, I'm 100% committed to GCSOM. If there are any current students on the thread, I'd love to ask questions about places to live in Scranton/anything you would suggest doing before the start of the semester. Best of luck to everyone still in the process and hopefully we'll be classmates this fall!

The faculty interview was a little bit more difficult for me. I was asked a few situational/hypothetical questions and the standard med school interview questions. The student interview was more relaxed and casual, and I actually really enjoyed it!

Apologies if this was previously answered, but can someone tell me what is different between a PRIME interview and a regular interview?

Hello, does anyone know how many people they interview for their scholars program and how many get an acceptance? Are the interviews for scholars different compared to just MD interviews?
There aren't interviews for the scholars program. I was admitted back in December (and ultimately declined the offer), but all I had to do was fill out the question about it on the secondary application. I think they accept a fair number of people - it's some significant percentage of the incoming class (but I forget the exact figure). Best of luck!

Any accepted student who wants to be apart of a 2025 fb group can request to join. This is not a GCSOM official group, but it is unlikely an official one will be created for another couple months. This is just a way to get a foot in the door with potential classmates and will be inactivated once an official page is created.

Anyone know the schedule for their am sessions? Interviewing here and still haven’t received any info!

You can find it on their amp site where you scheduled your interview under the interview tab where it says sample schedule

Do you guys think Geisinger will drop more results this coming week 😳

For those who were deferred, how soon after your interview did you find out?

PRIME is for the primary care scholarship (FM, IM, Meds-Peds or Psych), but there doesn't seem to be any functional difference in the interviews. My student interviewer didn't even know I was interviewing for it, and I was never asked any specific questions about it (so I had to really upsell my commitment to primary care).

My experience was very similar

I just received the Zoom link this morning and the only thing that says is "Prior to your interview day, please login to your application portal and review and submit the confidentiality agreement."

I will email them now! Thank you & likewise, future colleague 🙂
Hey! Sorry to bother, I know it's been awhile since you posted this, but I was wondering if you ever got a reply when you emailed? I'm in a similar situation of having several months in between my II and my actual interview date, and I can't for the life of me remember if I had already accessed and filled out the 'video interview user agreement', or if that's something that isn't available until closer to the interview date... When you emailed, were they able to confirm whether you did/didn't?

EDIT: Also, if anyone else has been through this process already and has any insight, please lmk! My interview is coming up soon and, as usual, I am very confused LOL. Thanks in advance!

Hello! II on 01/13, and I didn't have access to the 'video user agreement' until the day before I think. Honestly, that's something that you can just sign the night before. I want to say that it was under the 'Web interview' tab that pops up a day or so before the day of your interview.

I just got some weird-ass e-mail from Geisinger and it seems nobody else on here has received it. "The Admissions Committee has reviewed your materials nd elected to defer an interview decision until a later date. Your application will remain under review, and when the Committee makes its final decision you will be notified."

Like... huh?? Uhhh.... I didn't even interview at this school. Why is an interview decision being deferred? And if they mean extending an II then... what? I feel like I'm just waiting on a deferred rejection now lol.

Does anyone know what time the morning interview starts and when it ends?
Thanks

I am pretty sure this means that the next time the committee meets, they'll review your application again and decide whether or not to extend an II to you. At least it's not a pre-II R!

Thanks so much for the clarification!!

After speaking to several scholars, my understand was that there is no interview for the Abigail Scholars Program. Rather acceptance to the program is a collective review of your interview for GCSOM (the school as a whole), CV, and your application. Can anyone else clarify this?

Hey all, I interviewed on February 1 and was wondering when do you all think those of us who interviewed around that time will hear back? From what I've read in this thread, people are hearing back almost 10-12 weeks after their interview date. Does that mean I'll have to wait until April, or even May, to hear back??

according to last cycle, Geisinger got a bit behind due to holidays and then caught up later on. So I am thinking that we won't be waiting for 12 weeks (hopefully), or the whole timeline would get realllly messy

Hey, I got accepted into the Abigail Scholars Program. I pretty much just filled out the secondary prompt and was asked two or three questions about primary care in my faculty interview. 2 weeks post acceptance I received a call from the GCSOM admin letting me know about my acceptance into the scholar's program. They just notify you, ask if you're still interested in it, and then send over the tax paperwork/ logistics of the agreement. I don't believe you have to firmly commit, however, you do have to notify them within 2 weeks of the offer if you are interested.

Hope this cleared stuff up a little bit.

It is a firm commitment - that's why I ended up turning down the offer. In the Acceptance Letter they send you (which you need to sign and return within 2 weeks), it states that by signing you will "Enroll as an M1 student for the fall 2021 semester." By this reading, it is 100% binding, and I didn't feel comfortable locking myself into a medical school so early in the cycle (this was back in early January for me).

I believe it is a firm commitment, however, it is not binding. The informational session included a lot of rhetoric like "if you choose to join us" and "pending your official decision".

I'd suggest anyone who is confused on this point to just email admissions lol. It seems like they've been somewhat unclear, but the Acceptance Letter made me think it was binding.

My interview is this Friday. Do they send the zoom link on the day before your interview or the day of?

Does Geisinger tend to drop interview results on certain days? (Like, As on Fridays etc)

It is weird since last year, students heard back from their interviews this week and some deferred people heard decisions next week.

It was one of my more stressful interviews certainly. The student interview was extremely friendly and conversational, and I had a lot of time to ask questions. The faculty interview though... painful. It was a lot of grilling, very specific questions, and almost combativeness from the interviewer. Perhaps this was intentional to see if interviewees squirm under pressure; perhaps it was just my interviewer who didn't look kindly on my experiences and responses. Either way, I'd go in prepared for an absolute grilling, and if you make it out better than I did, you'll be relieved! 🙂
I agree. My student interview was really easy. The faculty interview was tough. He asked me a lot of tough questions. @PoorProspects were you surprised that you got accepted since you thought the faculty interview was painful?

^Same here. My student interview was great but I def relate to the "grilling" and near-"combativeness" from my faculty interviewer. Probably the roughest interview I've had this cycle, so I won't be expecting much from here, unfortunately ;-(

I was definitely surprised to get the A, but this might just be how Geisinger operates. It's really hard to say. The more other people are relating to this experience though, the more I'd be willing to say it's intentionally done by some interviewers as a test of character or something.

Do we know when they'll start to make decisions on deferred applicants?
