2020-2021 Iowa (Carver)

One person said most of their acceptances actually come from the final pool. Is that what you heard as well?
Not clear on that specifically. I'd believe it.

I understand that in the final pool, everyone is ranked/scored. They then accept the top X ranked students (enough to give out all the A's they want to initially), then waitlist the bulk of the rest (your rank then becomes your number order on the WL, so the person just after the A cutoff is #1 on the WL), and then rejections are sent to the bottom X ranked students.

So I imagine most early A's are only given to people they REALLY know they want, but not all initial (non-WL) A's are given until after the final pool has been ranked and final pool A's released.

I see! Do we get to know where we stand on those rankings? Also, does this all happen pretty soon? (As in this month)

People get notified they will be in the final pool around end of January. After that, around early March people in final pool will find out if they rejected, accepted, or waitlisted. You would know exactly where you are in the rankings if waitlisted, so you would know your ranked #12, for example.

Got it! So the month of Feb. is going to be pretty quite? Since March is when people in the final pool find out if they are rejected, accepted or WL'd.

Yea, I'm sure this thread will be really quiet during February.

Not to jump the gun, but how would financials i.e. merit and need-based scholarships work out for those who are accepted towards the end. Does it mean those people have a lower chance of getting that kinda stuff cuz its been used up earlier?

At the interview, they said Iowa reserves some scholarships for people accepted later on. They also said priority for aid is NOT based on when people are accepted, but when people submitted their FAFSA. So someone who submitted in October but not accepted until May would have priority over someone who submitted FAFSA in January and accepted in January.

You only have access to your waitlist ranking if you're placed on it, not your final pool ranking. If you're final-pooled, it's radio silence until the first or second week in March, when everyone finds out acceptance/rejection/waitlist at roughly the same time.

Anyone think Iowa is going to be a bit delayed this year in terms of IIs and Acceptances? Compared to last and past few years’ trends, this feed is relatively quiet in that regard.

Possibly slightly, but this has been roughly the same timeframe I experienced here last year. Certainly we can expect Final Pool notice before the end of January.

Is anyone interviewed this month automatically put in Final Pool, with final decision made in March?

Yes, all January interviews are automatically final pooled. But rest assured, it DOES NOT you are "ranked" any lower than 2020 applicants; it's done this way simply so January interviewees are given the same amount of review time that everyone else got.. in other words, it's meant to keep things fair. 🙂

My bad, I meant to say "2020 interviewees," not applicants!

Can someone please explain the difference between final pool and waitlist?

Sure! Final pool is exactly what it sounds like: the "pool" of applicants used to fill the final spots in the class. Iowa rarely rejects applicants who interviewed before the final pool notices are sent out. So, as a general rule, everyone who interviewed will either be accepted before the end of January OR receive the final pool notice at the end of this month. The admissions committee reviews everyone in the final pool a second time. In the first or second week of March after those reviews are complete, final pool-ers are either accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. Does that make sense?

Do you or does anyone else know if you don't receive an II (I am assuming they have all gone out, or if not that they are super close at this point) do they formally reject you in January or do they make you wait until March for that "official" R? It feels so strange to not know anything either way by this point!

They still send out pre-II rejections through January. I don't think they're quite done with II's as some people are canceling their interviews as other acceptances come in, but I imagine they'll be done sending invites pretty soon.

Ok cool, I was hoping I wouldn't have to wait for a pre-II R for months haha. Thank you so much for your insight!

Only people who interview can be final-pooled, though. If you don't interview before they release the final pool notice then it's most likely an R.

Does anyone know how much of the class has been filled thus far? Wondering if they will need to accept just a few more from the final pool or a whole lot more from the final pool.

Nobody knows exactly how many spots have been filled yet. Last year, I'm pretty sure about a third of the final pool was accepted (but they didn't tell us how many people were in the pool). Keep in mind, though, "filled" spots fluctuate a LOT as people decline acceptances.

Dang you’re so helpful and knowledgeable, thank you. You deserve good things.

Thanks for the reminder to do my FAFSA! Getting it done today!!

Congrats!!! What an incredible place to be accepted! Not to be totally neurotic, but acceptances are still trickling out today? Like you JUST got the email or was it from earlier? Again, sorry for being crazy lol
Haha no you're fine! I got the email at 3:20 PM EST but was commuting back from work so didn't see the email till about 5 when I got back. My guess is they all went out around the same time, sorry for the false alarm!

Either Iowa is done giving out IIs at this point or they're behind because even in previous non-covid years, II's were given in January.

Congrats to all who got in!!! And for the rest of us still waiting; Hello final pool my old friend, I've come to join you with great pain, because my A is softly fading, left my app while I was waiting....:whistle:
Don't give up hope; there are still a few Tuesdays left before Final Pool time!! Even then, lot of the Final Pool gets an A😉

Anyone interview late October still not have an A??
Iowa does NOT review chronologically! There isn't as much advantage to interviewing sooner as many think. You still have as much a shot as any date. Like your username says, never give up, friend ❤
