2020-2021 Iowa (Carver)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I hope you were able to make it to the admitted students presentation today! You were accepted, like, 3 hours before it started lol.
Did you think it was useful? Wasn't it just anatomy study tips?

Yea I thought it was useful, mainly to meet a professor and to hear the resources available to students. I didn't actually learn any anatomy lol.

Iowa does NOT review chronologically! There isn't as much advantage to interviewing sooner as many think. You still have as much a shot as any date. Like your username says, never give up, friend ❤
This is a relief haha, thank you!
Super random question, but did you apply with your current MCAT last cycle and have to reapply, or did you take it again since then? Bc damn I’d be shook if it required reapplication bc that’s a sweet score. Sorry if I’m being too probe-y/ you don’t want to answer.

Do we think any acceptances will be rolled out today? I heard later in the cycle people got As on Wednesdays as well

No worries at all! I did not retake the MCAT. My score was more than enough; I improved other areas of my application through service, clinical hours, study abroad, etc

quite random, but I’ve heard most schools have had huge upticks in applications this cycle. But I haven’t heard anything about Iowa... anyone know anything about % increase, or the lack there of, in apps to Iowa this cycle?

I don't know the specific numbers, but I asked about something similar during my interview. They said they did have an increase in apps, but would be interviewing roughly the same number of people.

I guess maybe that implies the increase hasn’t been too large? Bc most schools with upticks are interviewing more knowing that due to virtual interviews and all, people are less likely to commit post admission. Idk that’s what I make of it I guess.

or theyll just accept more off waitlist

Honestly at this point, unless some godsend comes down, I’ve accepted the pre-II R. Even though this thread seems kind of quiet and covid might be a reason for the slow down, they’ve probs almost, if not completely, done handing out IIs.

yes; there was an uptick in applications; roughly 15% nationwide. However, medical schools nationwide were instructed by the AAMC to try and increase class size by 10% this year because of the physician shortage, so we aren't necessarily competing for a much smaller proportion of spots. Hope this helps

Something tells me the Pre-II R hammer is about to drop on us all very soon. If this follows last years’ trends, they’re only sending Rs now in waves. 🙁
Unfortunately, I think they are done with II ☹. But stay hopeful if you havent gotten that official R. Anything can happen in this crazy time. Look what Dems have done!

True true, I guess with the late MCATs this cycle and applications being complete later, anything beyond the ordinary wouldn't be completely unexpected. I Ended up having to take a late September MCAT, so I was complete like mid-ish October. Not sure if they've even reached October complete dates, but I know they don't go chronologically, so who knows I guess.

In the same boat as you with the timeline. Does anyone know if the pre-II R's are being sent by email or if they will just be found on the portal? I hate how I am constantly refreshing the portal but will if I have to haha.

Hmm, this probably means that if Iowa is following the same instruction, they're either pulling more people off the waitlist or interviewing more individuals. Someone previously however mentioned that they are thinking of interviewing the same # of people, so idk it's probably pulling more people off waitlist I guess.

Yes hi hello that was me. To the admissions lady, I specifically mentioned the increase in number of applicants this year and asked if Iowa was interviewing more people. She said they will be interviewing the same number of people.

So does this mean more people will be taken off the waitlist for an acceptance, this year?

Sadness man, sadness. Put in a lot of stock and heart in this school 🙁. Guess it’s not R until it’s official but it’s meh.

How helpful do you guys think the academic and application updates could be? Would you submit them around the deadline (1/22) or sooner?

How helpful they are, I have no idea. Really hoping that it pushes me towards an acceptance rather than WL or R though because I submitted an academic update last week.

Anyone that truly knows the process here know if these updates help?

Where did you hear that schools were supposed to increase class sizes by 10% this year? That seems dangerous without a matching increase in residency spots from the government. Plus the AAMC Facts page shows matriculants rose 1% last year, and 10% over the last 5.

I asked the admissions department about what I should include in an application update, as I started some new volunteer activities that were not reflected in my primary application. If I understand them correctly, if there is something significant you have been taking part in that isn't reflected in either your primary or secondary applications, then you should absolutely submit an academic/application update.

What they do not want to see is any sort of intent address. They specifically stated towards the end of my interview that they understand your intent through your application to the school. I would also personally try to submit the update as soon as possible, unless you have anything happening from now until 1/22 that you would like to include in such an update.

Thanks for the information and I agree with what you've written here. We have three submissions as well as an academic update. I'll probably add my extra volunteer hours and then submit my grades for the past semester. I think they're looking for substance here, as opposed to trying to fill as many submissions as possible. It's probably best to submit sooner rather than later as well. Let's try our best here.

That's what I was told by an admissions representative during my interview with another school last week. She told me they were offering more interview slots because AAMC was encouraging all participating schools to increase class size. Granted, I haven't gathered any evidence to back that up; that's just what they told me.

Is this our last IowaTuesday? I feel like Final Pool notice should either be today or next week.

I thought the final pool wasn't for another week?

I cant remember exactly but I thought I remember notification was supposed to be given by mid-Jan but it could be end of month?
Historically it has been the the 4th or 5th week of January (around Jan 22nd-Jan 26th). This year, since updates are accepted until 1/22, I think it will be on or after that date 🙂.
