Wait can someone please explain this Final Pool Concept. Is this a Pre-II or Post-II thing and what does it mean at Iowa?
Post interview, you can either be accepted relatively quickly or 'final pooled', which means they don't make a decision until March

If we do not hear anything back by tomorrow, do you guys think its worth submitting an update/interest letter via the secondary portal? The deadline for this is 1/22 and I am pretty sure adcoms will be on winter break for the next few Tuesdays. Wondering if submitting an update/interest will increase odds of an acceptance post interview.

It wouldn't hurt. If we haven't heard back by mid-December into early January then we are probably final pooled. That means that they won't look at our application again until they get to the final pool of applicants. By the time they take a second look at you, it would be good to show how you've improved since they last reviewed your application.

That's a relief! I wonder what it takes to be accepted BEFORE being placed in the final pool though. IS vs OOS? Stats? I wonder what sets those acceptances apart from final pool acceptances.
I was accepted in the first round of acceptances this year, but I wouldn't say my application is stellar by any means (LM 73). I have pretty below average clinical hours and I do have research experience but no pubs. My application is mostly volunteer hours but I would say that I have a pretty unique story and 'why medicine' component to my application. Not sure if that helps reassure anyone or not, but you don't need to have a pristine application to be accepted prior to the final pool!

Congratulations, are you an IS student? LM 73 is pretty good IMO

I think IS applicants are having better luck being accepted before the final pool. From what I've seen, not all, but most people accepted so far have been IS right?

I’m too lazy to check, but I’ve felt it is pretty even between OOS and IS. I’d think OOS would get more acceptances and merit aid offers pre final pool because Iowa knows they’re more likely to get other acceptances because the OOS interview pool typically has higher stats. IS peeps are more likely to accept an offer to Iowa because of low tuition and therefore will stick with an acceptance later in the cycle.

OOS, LM 76, first round of acceptances, no idea why Iowa wanted me since I have absolutely no ties. I think my ECs and research aren't too unique, but my interview went absolutely great.

Congrats on your acceptance! I felt like my interview went very well, also. But haven't heard back since the interview that was at the end of Oct. This school is a top choice for me so hoping for an A here at some point!

I love Carver for everything except their post-II process, it's absolutely brutal.
As a lowly pre-med I loved Iowa because of how transparent about the process they are on the website. As an applicant, I see that the final pool is the WORST waiting ever, especially if I don’t know if I’m in it lol

I think everyone that interviewed (and not yet accepted) is final pooled
Thats not true, they continue to interview a few weeks into January. The final pool isn't finalized until every candidate who accepted their interview invitation has been interviewed.

So there are post interview rejections then?

Yes, they do happen, but the vast majority of post-interview rejections are received in early March after the final pool review.
Got it! So if we are final pooled, will they still be sending out As every Tuesday? Or will we have to wait until March to hear back?

Good question! So some time at the end of January if you haven't heard yet, you will get an email that states you have either been accepted OR you are in the final pool. The final pool is used to fill the remaining spot in the class. The admissions panel reviews the final pool candidates a second time and the first or second week in March, they will send an email to all final pool candidates on the same day with the final decision: accepted, rejected, or WL. Does that make sense?

Yes that makes sense, thanks! You have a lot of knowledge about the process here.

Hey everyone, I got my A on a Wednesday morning, so it's definitely possible for decisions to be sent out later in the week🤗 I'm rooting for all of you!
Me too^^ I also saw on last year’s thread that toward the end of the year (December) they started releasing decisions on Wednesday mornings for a couple weeks

I think they may be done sending As for this year? They are probably going on break next week.

Perhaps acceptances have gone out but maybe this thread is just not very populated so they haven't been reported here? Just a guess.
You could definitely be right but seems odd not to see any acceptances on here for 2 weeks. I've looked through the thread from last year (neurotically of course) and many people thought they over accepted initially so maybe admissions is trying to overcorrect that this year? Can anyone who made it to the wait list last year speak on this?

there is only one way to scavenge year-old application threads: neurotically

Think it's time to put in that post interview letter of intent since we didn't hear back this week. Pretty sure they are going on break after this week, so won't be hearing back until final pool time in Jan.

afaik it has 0 effect on your admissions odds. post interview, you will eventually be assigned a score and be admitted if the score is high enough - letters of intent have no effect and almost seem discouraged here

source is the all access podcast from CWRU

I am wondering why they have a space for us to do it on the secondary portal (due 1/22) then. What if we have a new grade that wasn't on our primary app? They have a grade update on the secondary portal.

Edit: You are correct. Just checked and it said NO letters of intent. Thanks.

I’m pretty sure that space is for new activitiy updates. IIRC that space says “Please do not submit Letters of Intent”
