2020-2021 Kaiser (Tyson)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also I'm wondering if we can take notes for the MMI? Like come up with a blueprint during the 2 minutes we have to read the question or do we have to keep that all in our head?
During the in-person we were allowed to write stuff down on a notepad and reference that during the station. So I’m sure they will try to do something similar!

Great thanks for your help. I haven't done my interview yet (6 days ahhh) but I like how they are doing them. I like the hybrid approach they are taking.

@premonist how did it go? I know there's an NDA so you can't give specifics, but I'm wondering what you thought in general.

Did anyone get app complete but still waiting on a LOR? My status changed to complete and have my two letters in but I am waiting on one more? It says for me letters of reference incomplete but app is complete.

OOS, URM, primary receipt on 7/17 but still no secondary 🙁

II just received!! I am a bit confused by the posted agenda... will I have 4 hours worth of interviews? It says interview group one is 8:15-10:15, then group two is 10:20-12:20 but this seems excessive? Can any people who have already interviewed explain the agenda a bit?

yeah so this was a bit strange. You’re split up into two groups, you just sit idle while the other group finishes up their interviews (I strongly recommend eating during this time) and then you go into the next activity!

great, thank you! when I first saw the agenda my first thought was "when am I gonna eat?!" so this is very helpful!

What did you think of the interview? I knows there's an NDA so you can't get too specific, but in general what did you think?

Does anyone in their status page say application complete instead of complete and awaiting review? I am confused.

very low stress, very reasonable questions all around, it was very fun. I’m committing 100% if I’m blessed with an A here, everything made sense following the interview 🙂

Great to hear. It's definitely becoming a top choice of mine the more I learn about it. I mean free tuition + they give you a nice laptop, iPhone and pay for lyft rides to clinicals?? Seems like they're really trying to prioritize their students.

I hope they aren't interviewing 700 people like last year (according to MSAR). Did they mention anything about that/when decisions would be made?

The dean did say that they were being a lot more selective this year with interviews. He really congratulated our group (and yours too) for being in the very first batch of students to receive interviews. So did the admissions committee. He talked numbers but I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say. We still start hearing back in October (rolling admissions, the usual).

My traditional interviewer genuinely wanted to know more about this VERY unique hobby on my app. I stopped paying attention to the time and so did he. He told me where to find him so we can pick up our conversation later. It was that smooth.

i had a lot of fun. I’m going to be heartbroken if it doesn’t work out here because for my first med school interview ever, I felt like I connected with every single one of my interviewers.

Sorry, I went on for long, but just go in there and be yourself. You’re amazing and you’ll do well!

was the MMI portion stress free also? I know you cant say much but were there any obscure or stressful questions or more basic?

Question... is the MMI and the single person interview done during the same interview day? or do only a select few who pass the mmi go onto the one person interview? also if they are the same day which one is done first?

The one-on-one interview is a part of the MMI so it will be one of your MMI stations that you rotate through.

Was there a consensus reached on what triggers the secondary..? I received an acknowledgment on July 10th when I submitted primaries, and primaries verified Aug 14th, but I still have not received a secondary from KP... My numbers are not stellar or anything but definitely above any kind of pre-screen cut off. Should I call them about it and ask? Thanks!

As far as I’m aware, there are no cut offs.

I would email [email protected] . I had a similar delay, emailed them one Saturday, and they sent me the secondary by that Monday. I wasn’t able to reach anyone by calling.

Same happened to me, and I took my MCAT in 2018 so I knew nothing was holding up my secondary. I emailed them about it in early August and got my secondary that day.

Anyone else on secondaries when it asked about learning write something about other than science related? I wrote about mindfulness

@premonist and anyone else who has interviewed at Kaiser this year or last: Did they give you any info on research opportunities for MD students? The website just links to KP research across the country and I am trying to figure out who I could do research with (KPSOM faculty members? KP sites in SoCal? CalTech? USC? All of the above?) and how well research is supported (ie I found some stuff that suggested you can take a research year after M2). I have tried reaching out but have not heard a response in over two weeks and my interview is fast approaching (not today lol).

If noone can answer this for you, I think that it would be a great question to ask during your interview right? I’m also curious lol but my interview is on the 15th

Definitely. I'd bet that a lot of people wrote about non-science. My topic was academic/intellectual, but more arts and humanities focused. Everything I wrote about related to science came off as bland, lol, but that's probably because it's something I love without having a deep personal passion. Mindfulness seems like a good way to take it, too.

Nice! I agree, mine was a mix of science and creativity. Long story short, I wrote about fish (I'm a fish-keeper). It's something that I am very passionate about and it was actually fun to write.

There is an emphasis on research in the curriculum, but it is primarily clinical research. It is called the scholarly project. There are no labs on campus. Basic research can be done at nearby institutions if you so desire, and the school can help you with reaching out to labs. Whoever you want to do research with (members of KPSOM faculty, other KP regions, other institutions, etc.) is determined by you. For example, you could have an idea for a retrospective case study using national/KP data sets. You could reach out to anyone at KP to be your mentor, you could join a group that is already doing something similar, or you could just ask around if anyone had a good project for you. If you decide to join a lab, you could potentially fulfill your scholarly project requirement with a basic research project.

Thank you! This is very helpful!

Hi I am incredibly impatient (not a good trait for applying to med school lol), anyone know what day they are on for sending IIs?

Based on this thread, it looks like they have extended IIs on 8/10 and 8/31 (could be other days, too, if nobody from an II invite group is on SDN). If that same pattern holds, they could be on an II invite schedule of sending invites every ~3 weeks. So next batch could be 9/21ish but that's 100% conjecture just based on this thread's info.
