2020-2021 Kaiser (Tyson)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I believe the stat was that last year was that they interviewed 950 to ~1000 for about 100 acceptances (although one current student thought it was like 70 acceptances). There was early interviewer from this thread who said that the dean stated that KP would interview fewer this cycle. However, it seems like they're still interviewing around a 1000 based on the frequency of interviews with 25+ people. I asked at my interview and they said they weren't allowed to say the number of interviews they would be giving this cycle. Anecdotally, very few have been accepted on this thread.
wow I misremembered that number haha. I'm probably remembering wrong about what they said about this year too. Does anyone know if they're running 2 interview days per week or just one?

I think I have seen both numbers thrown around. Either way it's extremely low. I think the number could be calculated based on the total number of interview dates but some schools don't populate their last interview dates as heavily. In my interview they hinted that they may not cover living expenses for our class, which would probably drop the yield considerably and lead to a few more acceptances

The first class got their living expenses covered as well? Rent, etc?

the incoming class get full COA (living expenses covered as well in financial aid) -- heard from a bird in the sky

I almost thought that Kaiser wished me Happy Holidays and simultaneously gave me an R...
Ha. Yeah, the emails I get as I Kaiser patient now cause my BP to rise. I am also applying to another school I once attended in another capacity, and every time they send me a newsletter or ask me for money, I have the same response.

Wow this was so depressing to read... why do they interview so much for so few spots damn

I would like to clarify a few things. Currently, I believe two interviews are being conducted per week: Tuesdays and Fridays. "Merit" aid scholarships can be awarded on top of the tuition waiver. That being said, to my knowledge, every member of the first cohort was awarded a 4-year stipend for COA.

I would like to correct some things here. Dr. khoury never had her license revoked. She was truly on suspension from both clinical and the medical school. After 6 weeks she was taken off suspension on the clinical side of KP meaning she can resume her physician duties. the issue I and the students have is that from the beginning we were given the go around on how to help Dr. Khoury and get her back. We tried to solve this internally by writing emails to the Dean and those involved in the investigation with vague responses or none at all. Dr. Khoury was also not reachable for confirmation of her story. Reading her tweets were enlightening but still don’t allow for complete putting together of the puzzle pieces because students who had her were told she was taken out of the classroom because she “deviated from the session slides.” Us students are hoping to get actual answers from the leadership team, and not them hiding behind “legal reasons, labor laws, and HR.” If nothing satisfactory happens we have other plans in place to get our voice out there that will hopefully result in Dr. Khoury being reinstated.

Now, the other commenters are correct in that the students on the interview panel today are very upset, but at the same time still hopeful for KP’s EID mission because that mission becomes a reality through the students and faculty. I know that I, personally, and other students will continue to fight for KP to be the school they told us it will be
Thank you for sharing. I find it surprising that KP hasn't released the reason for the suspension, although I understand that there might be claims that need to be fully investigated before making a public statement. I can't fathom what Dr Khoury could have said or done that would have warranted a suspension, outside of threatening or verbally abusing a student or hate speech or something (which just ... seems unlikely). It's also hard to imagine that a student's white fragility was so triggered as to report Dr Khoury during a conversation on race and that would result in suspension.

The leadership team is 100% in the wrong and are clearly trying to cover something up. The student allegation is still a possibility, but low because us students went that route first. We have other theories that are still very possible

So I was browsing their website (yes I need more hobbies) and I saw their posting for Dean of Diversity & Inclusion. I‘d like to optimistic but coupled with the controversy surrounding Dr. Khoury’s investigation, I’m a little wary. I expect a new school to have its issues but this is not a great place to start

I tend to very much agree that Yield would drop tremendously if full COA not covered.
Many of the Accepted students are of the caliber that they likely are receiving merit aid from T30 or higher ranked programs.
Doing simple math.... assume a T30 program costs $95k/yr comprised of $35k cost of living + $60k tuition, fees etc.

Say someone gets 1/2 tuition at a T30, is it worth $120K more with less risk and likely more home residencies than Kaiser?
Last year’s accepted students would have had a more striking $260K difference.

all that said, I think it likely that the first four classes will receive full COA.
It might take until the end of the cycle to notify all accepted students, but I think all the aid will be there.

This could simply be a formality because there has recently been a re-organization where we now have a Dean of Admissions, Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity and all under the Dean have to “re-apply” because of the new internal re-organization. Our Associate Dean of EID is still here

Beats me, she said in another tweet that her lawyers have asked to see her file and KPSOM has refused. From the outside looking in, it seems like a coverup.
Isn’t that illegal? How can anyone be allowed to fire someone with no explanation

Idk but she just dropped another tweet with a screenshot of an email between her and Dr. Kanter. They were planning on promoting her. The email is dated June 10 and Dr. Khoury was suspended on Aug. 28, the same day as her lecture on racism in medicine.

Wow this screams 🚩🚩🚩🚩

Very disappointed with kaiser. Wanted to give them benefit of the doubt but their actions continue to contradict their words

I truly hope she sues for discrimination and wrongful termination.

California is an at-will state. Anyone can hire or fire at their will no need for any reasons. Also, looks like you guys are seeing only one side of the story. Kaiser has announced that they are unable to reveal info due to ongoing investigations etc, right?

However they cite performance issues in their letter that they refuse to tell her about and have never told her about. I've been waiting for the other side thinking maybe the side we are hearing is incomplete..but it's clear that they are now leaving her in the dark too. Completely unethical. Also what's legal and what's ethical isn't necessarily the same. Dot a medical school to be unethical just because it's legal doesnt mean it's OK

Well it certainly seems as though the investigation has concluded. I could understand why they wouldn’t be able to reveal anything publicly, but it makes no sense for them to keep Dr. Khoury completely in the dark as to why she was fired by not releasing her file to her legal team. That, combined with the timing of this, puts me firmly on Dr. Khoury’s side. Kaiser might come up with a “reasonable” explanation for all this, but I’m certainly not holding my breath.

Officially withdrawn my application. I thought this was my dream school a few months ago, but they have shown that this isn't the case. I feel privileged to be able to make this decision and wish you all the best in your cycles.

Heavily debating withdrawing mine as well. I have another acceptance so I feel safe considering this option, but idk...I don't think I could in good faith want to go to KP now.

My acceptance definitely gave me the confidence to do this. Unfortunately, I probably wouldn't have otherwise, since I am very risk-averse. It did feel good to use what very, very little power I have as an applicant.

How do you withdraw? There's no withdraw option on the portal
