Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think schools reject people off the waitlist until a full class commits. Waitlist usually means they want to accept you but there is no space.

Some schools do release people from the WL early. Dont think UMass is one of them though

Did any other accepted student receive the email today regarding 'Next Steps' that told you to look at the blood borne pathogen policy within PeopleSoft or the Student Health Clearance Form? Where in the portal are we supposed to do this? My portal just has my secondary application information in it and the option to decline after acceptance

Yes also received the email. The form is on the Accepted Student Webpage that is linked in the email

gettin pretty nervous about this lack of activity 😕. anyone know if any movement has started (for non-PURCH applicants)? Seems like a good wave of acceptances had already gone out by this time last year.
Getting pretty nervous as well...hopefully we haven't missed the wave and that its just a bit delayed for whatever reason this year...

It seems unlikely to me that offers went out and nobody who uses this thread got one but also seems equally unlikely that nothing has gone out at all. Got me stressin!
Also feel stressed about it, but feel like it’s definitely possible that some schools haven’t began waitlist movement yet. COVID has pushed back a lot this year and I wouldn’t be shocked if it has also affected waitlist movement.

Anyone out there that is considering withdrawing or has not committed that want to give the WLed people some hope 😀

The group size seems really high even considering the current student admins.. perhaps they overenrolled compared to the previous cycles?

That's what I am thinking. I am wondering if with the pandemic the in-state tuition is keeping the yield high for who they admitted. Very stressful, I'm glad that I am in the same boat as everyone looking to see if there will be any waitlist movement.

Idk, they publicly say they waitlist 150, accept 100. Ton of movement. Would be really strange to see what seems to be almost none
can i ask where you saw this? ive heard it before and it seems consistent-ish with last years 70/100 ratio but im so stressed that nothing seems to have started

No prob, they post it on MSAR. So data right from schools. Would be so strange if this year is radically different. Stressing as well though 😞

Trying to stay positive but starting to think there just isn't going to be much if any waitlist movement this year, which is a huge bummer considering what the numbers on MSAR say

I'm having the same feelings, but also trying to stay positive as well. I just refuse to believe that those MSAR numbers would be so different this year

My question is why don't we hear it from them directly? Is there some sort of restriction on communication or does it come down to having the balls to say what the hell is going on UMASS?

I’ve seen people on other threads reach out to admissions offices to get more information on timeline and expected movements.... but alas you would need the balls 😅

True. Has anyone done this??

You're welcome.

Long time lurker, first time poster on their second cycle and second consecutive WL at UMMS. Here's my $0.02:

First off, ty @NamesMcree for asking them. Unfortunately, that's par for the course lol. Schools will give you ZERO info. I emailed them last year out of desperation and got almost verbatim the same response.

Obviously, COVID's messed everything up this past year, but I don't think it's the main reason, or even a reason, why there's been very little movement here. Think about it: last year when the pandemic was ramping up and in full swing, WL A's came flooding in late April and early May. One could argue COVID was MORE disruptive back then (it certainly was at my job!) than it is now. There are other schools (like Buffalo and maybe a few more) that appear to be having the same WL thing happen that typically have insane movement. In a way, this is unprecedented for how long it's dragged on. I'm pretty sure UMass is intentionally delaying WL's.

Let's ask ourselves a question: What makes a medical school look competitive/"good?" In part, it's the number of apps received, the average stats of candidates matriculating, the list goes on. Another important factor is its waitlist. What looks better for a school: having a waitlist acceptance offers/waitlists ratio of 20/150 or 100/150? 20/150 makes it looks like NO ONE wants to give their spot up (if the school doesn't over-enroll, which UMass does not I'm pretty sure) and ANYONE who replaces someone who gave up a spot is certain to keep their own spot. 100/150 makes it look like a lot of people leave the class and not many people who are given an A from the WL either ultimately matriculate or even accept the offer. I think someone in an earlier post asked if having 100/150 meant UMass's class contained 100 people from the waitlist. Absolutely not. It means they offered 100 people on the waitlist an A before school started. Who knows how many in the final class were officially from the waitlist? It's my personal belief that >50% of WL movement at UMass is OOS, but I can't prove that, it just makes logical sense that most OOS people can get a better price somewhere else. In turn, this inflates the WL numbers at this school a bit.

So, 100/150 people doesn't make a school look great for reasons already mentioned. How can they decrease the numerator but keep the denominator the same if they want to? By waiting. As time moves on, people who really don't want to attend UMass will rescind their WL offer, and people in the current class (whether IS or OOS) who get a better offer elsewhere will also give up their spot. As other deadlines approach, the WL thins more and more until it's filled with either guaranteed spots (i.e. people with no other WL's/A's here like me and I'm sure many others) OR people who really want to attend UMass regardless of whether or not they have other A's/WL's. If the adcoms wait, it makes their job so much easier. They have to meet fewer times every time a spot opens up (UMass doesn't have a ranked WL, so the committee or sub-committee presumably needs some sort of agreement on who fills other spots), and they are more certain whoever they give an A to later on will be guaranteed, thereby decreasing the numerator once the cycle is over. It just makes too much sense to me.

"But wait, MJJM," you ask. "Why do we have an earlier reported PURCH/MD acceptance? There is some WL movement." Good question! I believe that for PURCH, it's such a specific program that people are seeking out that there is, annually, a higher retention for WL PURCH A's. On top of this, there's fewer PURCH applicants. So, because there's a smaller pool, they can more easily predict who fills what spot whenever a current PURCH A gives up a spot, and they can meet fewer times. Contrast this with regular MD, where there are way more applicants, and it becomes exponentially harder to predict who fits what spot and/or what is needed to be filled in the current class. More meetings are bound to happen, so they want to mitigate the time they spend picking their incoming class to focus on the many other things I'm sure they have to do for the school.

FWIW, I followed the FB page movement all last year, and it's DEAD this year. This year, I started keeping track when it was at 354. It was at 329 this past weekend with about 6 even joining after all that (so really a total of 31 having left), now at 334. Although FB nums aren't super accurate, they're some kind of gauge we can use. C'mon, everyone in our generation has and uses FB and would join the group if they were accepted. Also IMO, it's way more likely for a current accepted student giving up their spot to leave than it would be for, say, a current M1 and on, admin, or individual helping with 2nd look day. ALSO, I know for a fact current students join frequently to advertise housing (see UMass 2018-2019 thread, page 14, NeuroSurgeo's comments). Therefore, I'm thinking that people joining could be either current WL acceptances or current students, but people leaving most certainly should be accepted students giving up a spot. This could mean there's around 30 unfilled spots right now waiting to be filled.

I really, truly believe (trust me, I do not want to have to go through a 3rd app cycle) that they are delaying choices to make their lives easier, guarantee they meet fewer times, and ensure a higher WL retention to make the school look generally better/more competitive. Also, this year has been extended in general. First WL's here started March this year as opposed to early/mid Feb in years past. I had already anticipated everything would be pushed back a few weeks in general. If I'm right, I think we should see some action start in June when the WL has thinned further, but I could totally be wrong lol.

And please to everyone who is still hanging on, prep for a re-app if you haven't! It's better to just move on (yet NEVER lose hope) than to sit around thinking about what could have been. Good luck homies ❤️ Sorry this was so long

FWIW, I've heard rumors that they are over-enrolled and waitlist movement might not happen at all.

really hoping they get moving, i know others who heard mid june but i have to CTE by June 15th for my only acceptance, but i dont want to somehow miss out on UMass, why is this whole process so awful

guys im losing my mind -- UMASS WHY MUST YOU MAKE ME CRY -- it sucks to be SO close to your literal dream school and know that you're just not gunna get it man

holding out hope on another friday but submitting my amcas app for next year, feels like just about giving up 🙁 seems like there really isnt going to be any movement
Yeah bro, either way, it's better to move on. Even if we end up last minute accepted, it'll be better to have focused on what's in our control.

As a current M1 who just took their last exam, I would like to congratulate those who have been accepted! We can't wait to meet you and let me know if you guys have any questions. To those who are waiting or reapplying, I admire your resilience. You all have applied to medical school under the most unexpected and unprecedented circumstances and you all deserve a big shout out for that. Don't give up!

Hey man, I appreciate the encouragement, and congrats on finishing M1. I'm not sure if you looked through the previous posts but we on the waitlist are just looking for any info we can get on the waitlist this year. Looks very different from previous years. Is there anything you can divulge?

I know someone mentioned that they might have overenrolled has anyone heard if they have offered incentives to defer to students that have been accepted? Otherwise I will keep hoping for super late waitlist movement but I am losing hope ://

I have a couple friends with acceptances who said that have not heard of any deferral offers from umass and have not recieved any themselves, but that doesnt necessarily mean anything is going to happen on the waitlist 🙁
