2020-2021 Miami (Miller)

Soooo, did you guys just copy and paste from your primary for some of the activities descriptions?? Rewriting it seems unnecessary...
What else can we say though? I shadowed a doctor and described everything he did in one sentence on the primary, and I felt like I couldn't really say more on the secondary besides that @Sredman

Just here offering my two cents, but I think a lot of the anxiety of writing blocks of text for the 500 word prompts is that if you don't you'll be held at a disadvantage compared to the student who did because the adcom will have more information to distinguish the two applicants, etc. Now how much that holds true, I don't know, because I'm not an adcom, but honestly do what youre comfortable with. If you read through it and it sounds like 500 words of bs then I'd prolly revise and not gun for the 500 words. That being said, this is just my two cents, do with it what you will.

How many people here wrote 75-100% of the word limit? To be honest, only two of my essays went over 300 words (why UMiami and most memorable travel experience).

I wrote to 75-100% of the limit on everything that wasn't a "list your XYZ with dates and a brief description." And then some of the optional ones were shorter. Like how much can you talk about your favorite sports team or playing pick up lol

I might just be fried from typing secondaries all month, but for the "Please provide a chronological list with dates AND a brief description of your clinical experiences/shadowing." prompt, did you all interpret this as only asking for shadowing descriptions? One of the previous prompts asked for community service/volunteering, but most of my volunteering is clinical, and I am unsure If I should be nesting experiences in both prompts? Thanks!

No, most of my clinical stuff is paid so i used that. If all you have is shadowing then that should be fine. And if you don't have any clinic experience that isn't volunteering, then it doesn't seem like you have much of a choice so i would just put it on the clinical section as well. But that's just me.

If you are this frustrated pre-secondary submittal I would strongly recommend applying to a program that doesn't invoke these strong feelings pre-maturely.
Don’t apply then? Life is gonna frustrate you much more in the future.

I'm sure you guys mean well, and maybe it's just me, but... I find it REALLY discouraging how every time someone voices displeasure with regards to a school, people immediately jump to "Well then don't apply!" Not everyone has the luxury of being able to pick and choose schools that exactly fit everything they want. It's okay for people to be a little meh about an application or criticize some elements, but still really want to get into an MD program somewhere. If you disagree with their opinion then it's okay to say so, but please stop discouraging people from applying at all.

Personally I don’t agree with this. People have been complaining about things that are so not worth complaining about. Like word limits on essays are getting you pressed? Gimme a break Lmao

And it's fine to believe that, I agree that word limits aren't really a huge deal. But I think that flat out telling someone not to apply draws a line (again, just my opinion though).

For the ochem requirement, are you listing 2 semesters or no? I took two semesters but find it kinda weird that they only asked for one. Also does anyone know if it looks bad if listed more semesters than the required semesters for the prerequisites for behavioral sciences, biology, and oche? I don't want that messing up chances, and was wondering if I should email them

I just simply disagree as well. If you can’t handle inconsequential frustration than I dunno, maybe the schools not for you. We aren’t even in the most stressful stage yet.

When I applied a few years ago, my required essays were like 300-450, but most of my optional essays were like, 100-150 words. You really really really don't need to fill 500 words if you don't have 500 words worth of stuff to say. They do not score your application based on word count.

Is this school receptive to updates? Need to clarify my amcas hours (there was a typo)

Just out of curiosity, how long is it taking you guys to have your rec letters matched to your application?

So miami is one of my top choices but I don’t really have any research experience besides a couple “independent scholarly projects” that I did in my bio and ecology labs. So for the research question, should I talk about one of the independent projects that I did through my classes as my research experience or should I just talk about what kind of research I want to do at UM? Thanks!

Afaik adcoms on here don’t consider class research actual research. I would just say what you’re interested in

I wouldn't call it "research" but if there's something you learned in one of those lab projects that particularly inspired you, challenged you, or informed your perspective on the research process, I think it would be appropriate to discuss. Just be sure to describe the context appropriately.

I think if they were part of an independent study course instead of just part of a class then it’s definitely research experience

Ahh gotcha, thank you guys! Would I still have a shot even if I don’t have research? I think in terms of mission fit I’m pretty solid, but I feel like having no research might be holding me back

96% have research according to msar. If your app is fantastic then shoot your shot Kobe

Your status changes to “you have been reviewed by the committee”
AHHH okay. mine just says this:

Your Application is currently under review by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Once they score you at Miami, is it basically like you get an II right away or you aren't getting one... or is it that they hold off end send them in batches?

I believe they rank people by score and offer an interview to the top X people (however big their batch is). They’re always ranking more people so if your score ever gets into their top X window, you’ll get sent one.

I submitted 8/6 as well and not scored yet. I wonder if they go in order or prioritize some factor over the other. I do like the idea of being scored though, makes you feel like something is happening behind the scenes.

I applied last year and as far as I can tell I never got scored. At least, the text never changed.

Interesting, I think someone earlier in the thread said their status changed to something like "your app has been seen by committee." I'll update if I see anything.

when do we think they will begin sending IIs or holds to those who have been scored (it has been a few weeks in that stage for me)

Anyone else submit around 8/3 and still not get scored? My LOR got marked as complete on 8/11
Submitted 8/3 and still not scored. I was marked complete sometime before 8/20, but I wasn't checking every day.

Does University of Miami wait to have MCAT scores to send secondary applications? I still didn't receive a secondary yet.. anyone know why?

For those of you with LOR's finally marked, about how long did it take you? It's been over 2 weeks for me since I've completed my application and still no check mark :/
