2020-2021 Miami (Miller)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was told to email again if my letters had not been uploaded a week after their first response. Just sent that email because still nothing. They never picked up a single one of my calls and I tried to go in person to find the offices empty.

They responded rather quickly saying that my LORs are on my primary but they are still in the process of uploading them to the secondary portal. “It might take about 2 weeks.”

I emailed them this morning. They got back to me within a few hours telling me the same thing about waiting around 2 weeks after submission for them to be updated

Still incomplete due to letters but I'm going to wait until Monday to contact them
I mean no offense by this but isn't it pretty obvious that they're just a bit slow at updating letters to the portal? I feel like contacting them about it is just making extra work for them. If your letters are in AMCAS, then Miami will have them.

Completely agree, have a little patience guys! Sometimes app reviewers have to manually download your letters, which might not happen until they get to your spot in the pile.

I was told one week, now they're telling people two. That would be the 17th for me so we'll see but I'm not going to bother them again.

I wanted your guys' opinion: for the most memorable travel experience- would it be bad to go with a medical mission trip to El Salvador (not voluntourism) or go with a vacation travel experience?

Question? Is there any way to apply to both MD and MD/MPH programs? Or by applying to the MD/MPH program you automatically apply to MD? Wondering because just got secondary and only lets you choose one of the school's medical programs

Just my 2 cents but I wove a little about my medical mission trip (I've made an effort not to overemphasize it, per concerns of voluntourism/overseas clinical work not translating to US/yadayada) into another aspect of my application (clinical experiences, student groups, etc.), then talked about some particularly memorable pleasure travel for the travel experience question. I think doing this allowed me to get across more about me as a person! That said, if your trip to El Salvador was actually your most meaningful travel experience, by all means write about it! I don't see any harm in that and think it just depends on your experience and how much enthusiasm you can convey in your essay. Good luck!

In my experience with UM, you need to expressly write to admissions after choosing the dual-degree option and tell them that you would like to be considered for both programs. Confusing from their site because it mentions being reviewed by both MD and dual degree committees, but I learned from the MD/PhD director that I needed to tell them specifically to consider me for MD-only. I’d imagine that MD/MPH is the same, but admissions will know best.

But isn’t that why you can select the MD and MD-MPH selection? That’s what I selected and my status page has statuses for both programs

Idk if things have changed dramatically since I applied (possible), but you should be able to apply directly to both MD and MD/MPH (and I'm pretty sure that's been true for the past two cycles after mine).

I’m just operating off of my experience last year. My portal had statuses for both MD and MD/PhD, but according to the director of MD/PhD, my application would not be reviewed for MD only unless I asked admissions to review it for that path.

Do we know if Miami will be using CASPer Snapshot?

The question "Have you applied previously for admission to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine?" looks like it's under the heading "REAPPLICANTS." should i answer this if it's my first time applying to medical school? It almost seems like this heading is a mistake but I don't want to accidentally label myself as a reapplicant by answering this as no. What did people do here?

I’m not sure how you’d be marked as a reapplicant when you’re responding that you aren’t a reapplicant lol

Just put no

Because you could be a reapplicant to medical schools but not have applied to miami the first time around

I believe MD/PhD is a different process, and I don't know much about it. At least in my experience I was reviewed and given offers for both MD and MD/MPH tracks without any special requests. Some people may get offers from both, or just one. I'm fairly certain it's been like that for the last two years as well, but so much is different this cycle that who knows

That’s true but you should still put no. You’re a first time applicant to this school and that’s all that they’re asking

Does anyone know if Miller reviews secondary applications prior to receiving the CASPer score or if there is a CASPer deadline?

On the secondary portal like you choose one or the other, then it populates the question.

I wrote about a medical mission trip as it was one of my most memorable experiences, period. Don't hesitate to write about El Salvador if you think it impacted you and was a worthwhile endeavor! (Just don't write about doing anything you weren't qualified for, of course)

Hey everyone! On the secondary, it asks to provide a chronological list and brief description of clinical experiences/shadowing. Is it okay to copy what I wrote on the primary application? Or should I change up my descriptions? Thanks!

I'm not sure how to answer the following question, "Have you ever been convicted, pled guilty or nolo contendere, had adjudication withheld or prosecution deferred, in connection with a crime?"

Usually, these questions say something about whether they're asking about misdemeanors or felonies. I haven't had either of those, but I do have criminal infractions in the form of a ticket for no seatbelt, a parking ticket, and a defective equipment ticket; all of which I have pleaded guilty to. Should I mention those or just select the "no" box? It seems to depend on the definition of crime.

I think they are looking more for like a sentence or two here, but if you have enough space to include everything from your primary, I don't see why not

I would try to change up the description a little bit if possible, but if some phrases are necessary don't worry about changing every word.

For the optional question "Describe your most meaningful involvement in STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS." One of my MME's in the primary described a student organization role I really enjoyed and was proud of. Would it be alright to just state "My most meaningful involvement in a student organization was X, which is described in my primary application"? I don't want to come across as impertinent to adcoms, I just spent a lot of time on that MME essay and don't really think I could do a good job trying to talk about it in any other way.

Is anyone still incomplete due to letters? Submitted today (8/16)
Holy 66 primary 🤢🤢🤢

Theres been a lot of comments about this, you and i and many others are still incomplete due to letters. Apparently they upload the LOR for each application individually, for reference I'm still waiting to be complete and I submitted 8/3. Just be patient and email/call if they don't fix it within 2 weeks

Are there any Spanish classes or opportunities to learn Spanish at Miami? I haven't seen anything on their website, and it seems a little odd to me considering the school is in Miami. anybody know?

For "Please provide a chronological list with dates of your community service/volunteering" are you guys providing descriptions for the activities or just the name and date range?

Just name and date range. They are very particular when they want descriptions and when they don't.

Should we list officer positions for the volunteer activities as well? I have some activities where I held the position of volunteer coordinator or service clubs where I was president and wanted to know if it was necessary.

Also, do they read the descriptions for volunteer activities in the AMCAS application as some people said they don't read that. Some of my organization names were a little vague in regards to what I did, so was wondering if any descriptions would help.

@satdixon
I’d include a brief description. The picture I attached is from the document they sent out which had the link to the secondary

Hey guys, can anyone else not find any info on the school's curriculum besides the very basic descriptions and slides they put on the NextGenMD page of their website? I noted some programs when I was looking at the school a while ago for the purposes of the "why us" essay, but I can't find any information abt them now. It's possible that they deleted all of it bc they're switching to a new curriculum, so I just wanted to see if anyone else had the same issue. Like im trying to write abt their distinctive curriculum but the website is very vague abt it

somewhere on the website is a pretty long video that was their second look vid for last years cycle. I thought it was super super helpful in describing the curriculum and other important things about the school. if i find it ill link it back here

What state were they in? If they are misdemeanors then say yes. Florida also qualifies speeding as a misdemeanor if you are from FL btw.

This is not true. Florida also gives civil citations for speeding, depending on circumstances, speed, etc. It becomes a misdemeanor if it's categorized as reckless driving, or DUI etc.

No man just curious as my brother is a lawyer for the state attorney lol. Maybe it varies by district who knows.
It likely varies by district. For the most part, you would know if you've been convicted of a misdemeanor. If all you had to do was pay a small fine, and your driver's license was not suspended or revoked, it's probably just a minor citation or infraction. If you had fines in the realm of $10,000 or actually had to go to court / face possible jail time, it's likely a misdemeanor or felony.
