This may be old information for you guys that have interviewed but I thought I would relay it in case it hasn’t come up on interview days.
1) after being told to not reach out to any Yale SOM faculty to do research in the fall semester, we learned this week that only 10 of us M1s would be permitted to do any research at Yale. We are picked via lottery and if selected we must apply through Netter with a proposal which, if approved, will be sent to Yale faculty. If no Yale faculty want to work with you your opportunity moves to the next person on the list.
This restriction is coming from Yale, not Netter. It’s currently being called a pilot program, the number of spots may expand, the number of spots may shrink, however it is unlikely to return to how it was where we could reach out to Yale faculty at will for research opportunities. This is disappointing as the actual availability for research, especially clinical research, is kinda limited within Netter itself. It’s not the end of the world as there are other healthcare systems around, but it is something to consider if you are eyeing specialties that require research for a residency apps.
2) At least for my class, the indication seems to be that we will be stuck with the same MeSH placement (our clinical activity the first two years) for this year and next. Our MeSH has been cut short due to COVID taking time from the M2s last year so we missed out on last semester and only get to do half of this semester. Traditionally you have separate MeSH placements each year and the school makes a good effort to make one of the two years a placement with a specialist if you have a good idea of what you’re interested in and the other year in primary care (IM, peds, FM).
Several classmates were lucky to get placements with their specialties of interest, some of us are in our second choices, and some us are stuck in our last choice primary care option. Again, this may (and is likely) to change for those that would start next year, but is something to be considered if you thought you would have a good shot at getting a year of experience in a specialty of interest while doing MeSH.
