2020-2021 Quinnipiac (Netter)

Any idea if they're accepting additional letters of rec? MSAR lists 4 minimum, 4 maximum letters... but their update email said to send additional letters of rec via amcas?
I was wondering if it's possible if we can send letters of rec saved on our interfolios. (Ie I had more than 4 but only submitted 4 per MSAR and was wondering if we can send my extra ones as an update).

They did specify that if you send more letters, do it through amcas. Through interfolio, I made a delivery to AMCAS, and added the additional letter writers to my AMCAS list. All we would need to do is assign the extra letters to Quinnipiac...

This may be old information for you guys that have interviewed but I thought I would relay it in case it hasn’t come up on interview days.

1) after being told to not reach out to any Yale SOM faculty to do research in the fall semester, we learned this week that only 10 of us M1s would be permitted to do any research at Yale. We are picked via lottery and if selected we must apply through Netter with a proposal which, if approved, will be sent to Yale faculty. If no Yale faculty want to work with you your opportunity moves to the next person on the list.

This restriction is coming from Yale, not Netter. It’s currently being called a pilot program, the number of spots may expand, the number of spots may shrink, however it is unlikely to return to how it was where we could reach out to Yale faculty at will for research opportunities. This is disappointing as the actual availability for research, especially clinical research, is kinda limited within Netter itself. It’s not the end of the world as there are other healthcare systems around, but it is something to consider if you are eyeing specialties that require research for a residency apps.

2) At least for my class, the indication seems to be that we will be stuck with the same MeSH placement (our clinical activity the first two years) for this year and next. Our MeSH has been cut short due to COVID taking time from the M2s last year so we missed out on last semester and only get to do half of this semester. Traditionally you have separate MeSH placements each year and the school makes a good effort to make one of the two years a placement with a specialist if you have a good idea of what you’re interested in and the other year in primary care (IM, peds, FM).

Several classmates were lucky to get placements with their specialties of interest, some of us are in our second choices, and some us are stuck in our last choice primary care option. Again, this may (and is likely) to change for those that would start next year, but is something to be considered if you thought you would have a good shot at getting a year of experience in a specialty of interest while doing MeSH.
Thank you for sharing this. This significantly impacts my views going into next year. I was fully planning on doing research with a Yale professor and this is extremely disappointing and concerning for me. Are there consequences for reaching out to Yale professors? I was planning on doing so in the summer because research is such an important part of my career plans. For someone interested in translational research, it seems like there are few other opportunities. Is this the case? I don’t know much about the clinical partners/hospital systems that Netter is a part of - are there a lot/few clinical research opportunities?

My first thought when I read the update email today: "This is the longest rejection email I have gotten yet"
Should I be concerned I never got this email... my app is complete and I checked the tab showing the emails they've sent me and it wasn't even showing there...

Would it help or hurt to upload a letter of intent to their app portal pre-II?

I'm not sure about how much it would change things, but I emailed the admissions office a while back to make sure they were okay with me sending one in. They confirmed that you can upload them through the portal. Which I did, but still silence so far 🙃

Ok, thank you!!! I think based on their email last week they're behind due to COVID so don't worry quite yet!! Really appreciate the reply <3

Is there a class of 2025 Facebook group yet?
The link to the facebook group provided on the welcome packet is still not working for me. I'm assuming they haven't opened the group yet. The packet said we would be able to access it in early January.

When did you get the welcome packet? I received my acceptance email a couple weeks ago, but haven’t gotten any other emails since then.

I know I have to plan to committ later around April 30, but when do I get more information after I put down my deposit? When should I submit financial aid (FAFSA)?

I was accepted on Nov 13th and got my packet a little after a month later. You'll probably be getting it soon!

Thank you! I submitted it last night 🙂 Hopefully that might push my app into II territory. I'd kill to go here, think it's a perfect fit (but so do a ton of others 😛).

Congrats on ur acceptances!
I hope you hear back.

The interview day impressed me so much.

It struck a very strong impression that it's a new school heading in an excellent direction. And everyone makes you feel welcomed, and the students genuinely seemed happy to be there.

Good luck! I’m rooting for you! 🙂

And thank you!

That is very kind, I really appreciate it!!! My partner goes here so I've been lucky to see his experience, and he said he noticed the sense of community and staff encouragement on the day of his interview and it hasn't changed since. I hope you got in!!!

I'm turning down my acceptance. Like the previous person said, the fact that it's a new school means a lot of people probably used this as more of a "safety school" (which isn't really a thing for MD schools) and in state people who get accepted to UCONN or Yale will obviously turn down their acceptances as well.
I don't have any hard statistics for you but don't lose hope. Good luck.
I was accepted to both Netter and UConn. Taking into account teaching style, professor approachability, learning atmosphere, and clinical preparation offered, I chose Netter, and I am thrilled!! (Albeit, I'm also going to have more loans.) Who cares if it's a new school? - its match rates speak for themselves. I think it's a bit presumptuous to think those who get accepted to Netter & another CT school will automatically - "obviously" - choose the other school.

Tuition is also >$20k more per year at Quinnipiac, paired with being a new school, I think the vast majority of people who got both of those acceptances would pick UCONN. But of course there are outliers who don't have to worry about cost of attendance and feel they're a better fit at Quinnipiac.
I absolutely loved my interview day with Quinnipiac and they were definitely one of my very top choices, so I have nothing against them.
