2020-2021 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
II yesterday, IS, ORM, LM 69, complete late August. Super excited

In the confirmation email regarding my interview date, it stated, "We will provide you with a writing assignment that must be completed by 4 pm on the day of your interview." What kind of writing assignment is it, and will I have enough time to write it if my interview is at 2 PM?
Very short and very simple. Takes 15 mins

Just finished my interview! does anyone know if the person interviewing you is also a member of adcom/presents you to the committee? It seemed like she was awesome but not directly related to admissions even though it was open file.

When was the last wave of interview invites sent out and what were the complete dates around ?

Do you find out who your interviewer is before the actual interview?

I got an email the day before my interview with their name and specialty/area of expertise! It’s all super chill and conversational 🙂
I have my interview tomorrow, but have not received an email like that! I received my Zoom link, but that was it. Now I am nervous lol

Just looked back at my emails and the Zoom link was in a separate email from the interviewer profile information. The interviewer info should come along with your writing assignment!

does this school allow continued interest letters / updates before receiving an interview? in their application complete email they explicitly say "Please do not submit any additional materials unless you receive a request to do so."

yeah it can take a while, don't worry. If its been a week I would send an email to the office just to make sure they know you are still interested but it should come within 2 weeks of your interview.

Hi, I was just wondering if the email they sent to you said that we are supposed to complete the peer conversation within 5 days following the faculty interview as well? If so, isn't 2 weeks a bit too long. Thanks!

Mine came in like 8 days I think, either way I suggest emailing the office just to ensure your position. Best of luck!

Where did everyone send a thank you note to their interviewer?

I saw that downstate specifically says to get your AAMC VITA in two weeks after receiving the initial email. received the initial email last Sunday, and the VITA invite this past Thursday. But I also got my wisdom teeth extracted thursday, so have been in no shape to do a virtual interview. Do you guys think it would be fine if I do it next saturday? Or do you think thats cutting it to close?

just make sure you're within the 2 week deadline from the day you received the interview invite

And probably a dumb question. Is it two weeks from the initial invite? Or two weeks from the AAMC Vita invite? (there was like a 5 day between the two)

hey guys, i saw two diff posts so i just want to make sure. When did you guys receive the email with the interviewer's name and stuff?

I remember reading somewhere either in their email interview invite or in a PDF attachment they sent that it's 2 weeks from the day you were invited to interview, so I would go based on the day of the initial invite from SUNY downstate (not the day of vita invite)

Was the peer-to-peer interview just a series of personal/behavioral questions like why medicine, tell me about a time, etc.?

yes, it is a closed file interview. My interviewer gave me the freedom to take it in generally any direction I wanted and it was very casual

What was the peer to peer interview like for people?
Very conversational, although I would say the questions asked were much more open-ended than in the faculty interview.

Does anyone know how this school feels about update letters?

what did people wear for the student virtual chat?

Just a follow up on this, Is everyone going to/expected to wear full suit for the session? Or will this be more of a casual session where most of us will have our cameras turned off..

Someone above said that most people had their cameras on. But I'm also wondering what we are supposed to wear so it would be great if someone could elaborate on this

Hi! I'm a Downstate student who is involved with the virtual chat and last session, we had a lot of students in suits but the dean said they didn't need to dress up. Wear whatever is comfortable (just make sure it's appropriate lol). It's just a chance to ask students questions and get a feel for Downstate.

Hi! Will It hurt us if we can't attend?

No, it shouldn't! If you are interested in hearing from students, maybe you can ask if you can attend the next info session? They're being held on the first Friday of every month. It should be fine either way tho! (The info sessions were designed to allow applicants to meet and speak to current students and have their questions answered).

Do we receive an email with a Zoom link to attend the info session?

Did anyone else think the prompts for AAMC vita made it very hard to tell your narrative and talk about your own unique experiences? I didn't even get a "tell me about your path to medicine" type of question. It had big time casper vibes IMO, was not a big fan of it hahaha.

Anyone know how this school feels about update letters post II? I picked up a new job and wanted to write about that

lmaoooo so I initially received an email from Downstate back in Aug saying my MCAT was too old and looks like they changed their mind about that. I just got a secondary invite today... is there any point to completing it at this point in the cycle and paying the fee?

They’re modified rolling admission so I would def do the secondary.
