2020-2021 UNC - Chapel Hill

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm so sorry guys! I always hope for the best for all of you, and it breaks my heart for y'all not to get good news. I hope that you will all find your place, even if that isn't UNC, and that it ends up being perfect for you. And if you've been called to this profession like I have, then I truly believe I will be calling you Dr. someday! Don't lose hope, you'll get there!

Sorry for those who got an R recently. I’m not sure what to make of us who are still “awaiting decision.” After seeing a wave of Rs, I feel a little glimpse of hope, but who knows
"Awaiting Decision" as well since November, and even though we'll all find out within the next two weeks or so I'm curious as to whether other people still waiting felt like your interviews went well and you had a solid application? Wondering if we'll have a mixed wave of A's, R's and Waitlists or mostly the last two.

Interviewed in Sept and honestly I thought the interview went well at the time, but it was my first one and I feel I got better as they progressed (anecdotally, my last interview is the only A I have so far). So it might have actually been bad and I just wasn’t aware at the time lol. Super super holding out hope for UNC and I am bolstered by knowing people have waited as long as we have, and have still gotten in. A waitlist wouldn’t be out of question, wondering how much movement it usually has. Hoping the best for us all!!!

Congrats on your A!! I felt my interview went well as well, but I definitely know there are some areas of my application to improve so shooting for waitlist 😅. I believe they had about 60 people come off waitlist last year (probably less if they accepted slightly more people than seats up front) so hoping the best for all of us!

Do we think there will be decisions out tomorrow? or will they wait until the week of the 15th?
I think some of us are waving the white flag and are accepting the 2-week timeframe so that we don't obsess everyday (even though we all still will because all the decisions may come tomorrow!!!!) By the way, I thought the Mar 15 is only a suggestion only.

Soo there's no way they're done accepting people right? Not to raise stress levels at all, but I for some reason was looking at Attendify and saw Ms. Hernandez post a general message congratulating accepted students... so I'm hoping that doesn't mean all the people accepted have been (as you can tell, I'm stressing!)

Hello everyone! Congratulations to all of our accepted students. We look forward to getting to know you during our Second Look Program on April 10th! Please remember to email us at [email protected] if you have any questions.

This was the message I copied and pasted.
But this was from 14 days ago so I think it doesn't technically mean they are done but just wanted to notify when Second Look was?

the 15th was thrown around based on previous years threads. Typically they have sent the rest of their decisions before that time frame to allow students to narrow down their acceptances to their top three. I mean... I'd be happy with 1. I have had 2 interviews, 1 up-coming, and zero word. so... I'm hoping I hear something soon. I need to get my house ready to put on the market if I get an A lol

The housing market is hot right now (in most places). Hope you find success with med school and real estate.

thanks a bunch. It's definitely a seller's market and I'm super pumped about that. Less excited about all the little things that need to be done to my house to get it ready. I've also been eye-hustling on the housing towards UNC and holy crap, I don't know how we are going to be able to afford something similar sized to what we currently have. I may have to commute a bit

Durham is close and cheap AF

actually I was looking at Durham. I was also looking at Pittsboro, Apex, and Cary. My husband is active duty at Ft. Bragg so despite his insistence that he doesn't mind commuting daily, I think the commute from Durham may be a bit much for him. But Durham is definitely doable price-wise. But without an A yet, I don't even know why I bother worrying about it lol.

My classmate's fiancé works at Ft Bragg. They're living in Fuquay-Varina as a sort of midpoint, but yeah I think it's like a 45 min commute for both of them.

Given that some students live 45 min away, does that impact out of classroom activities (socializing or does that not exist?!) or studying on campus or research?

Well covid and step have made socializing... difficult. But people really have the opportunity to be as involved as they want to be. We have a lot of diversity among our students, including life circumstances. Several of my classmates have had careers before med school, they're married and have children, they care for older relatives and live farther away to do so. We've found a lot of ways to connect with each other, but ultimately you can tailor your med school experience to fit your life best. But a 45 min commute I don't think keeps people out of socializing or research or anything. Just like anything else, you have to plan for it, but you absolutely can manage it. Really that's what I've loved about UNC since starting here, that you can prioritize whatever is important to you and keep it in your life.

Yeah... we were looking at Sanford but holy crap, that’s an hour. Granted, sanford is super cheap to live but I don’t know if it’s worth an hour drive one way. I like Fuquay though, it’s a nice area without being stupid expensive

I can’t believe I got my II 6 months ago. I get delays... but.... a half a year delay?

in all seriousness I know they have a tough job going through all the applications, and I really appreciate all their hard work, but at some point I would really like to start... planning my life? Preparing to move across the country and start a new life in 4 months? Lol

6 months ago for me too :O I remember shaking with excitement that day

To all of you that got accepted just wondering but how do yall think you did on UNC interview?

I feel like one thing that my interview did was they looked me in my eyes and they legit gave me a genuine compliment referring to a quality that they see in their residents they teach. It really connected me to my interviewer and I think it was that connection that they wrote about and probably lead to a solid statement about my character to the review board.

I’m hoping UNC is done sending out rejections and next week they send out waitlist offers. Not as exciting as an acceptance but way better than a rejection

For those who heard back, what does your portal look like? I did not get a phone call, but my portal says decided. However no links have been uploaded so not sure what to think.
