2020-2021 UNC - Chapel Hill

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I believe the last interviews are on Feb 1, so there's a good chance they aren't going to put out more answers before finishing the interviews. Can't confirm obviously, but if I had so few interviews left to do, I'd probably hold off on decisions until then. Sorry guys! Keeping our fingers crossed for you!

Is that also true for post-II R's? I haven't seen any on here yet and I'm just wondering if it's because they haven't sent any out yet or people just haven't posted

Feb1? That's nothing! C'mon y'all, we can wait another week - just don't let be Rs!!!!

Yeah, in my year I don't remember there being any post-II Rs until all the As and waitlists had been decided on. It might be the second week of Feb to give them time to decide on all the last interviews, but two weeks is gonna go by quickly guys 🙂 You can do it!

I read somewhere that when we are in the interview stage stats do no matter as much. I believe the interview has more weight. I don't know how much this is true but if somebody knows anything about this please feel free to comment!

I think this is true for most schools. By the time you get to the interview, your stats are “good enough” otherwise they wouldn’t give you an interview. But big picture I think they still matter some. Just not make or break.

Ok that makes sense. I saw Dr. Gray podcast and he mentioned the same words "good enough", I just didn't understand what that really meant but it makes sense now. They still matter but not enough to make or break. Thanks!

Not that it was mentioned but I think all those who had an interview do not have to second guess how they did. The absence of info is not dependent on that interview at this point. Right now, this is just an unpleasant (or insane) waiting game for the A or R or WL now. Yeah, respect to the Sept interviewees!!!

Just to make sure I didn't miss anything in the thread, but no one from a December interview has heard back yet, correct?

Just imagine, in a week or so, there will be a wave of Assssssss (that didn't come out right but y'all know what I mean!) Enjoy every moment in the mean time.
Is it because they don't like sending A as they come or they have a designated time to send out acceptances because I don't know if they are holding onto acceptances?

I don't have any insider info. It is just the next logical thing: they will have to offer As and no one reported getting any in the last few weeks (and also based on what has been said previously.)

@alibon I'm curious – do you know about what percent of your class took one or more gap year before matriculating?

This is how I understand it. Correct me if I am wrong, guys.

Hard deadlines for SOM decisions:
  • March 15 - UNC must make ~180 offers (one for each seat they have)
  • April 30 - applicants must narrow down their SOM choice to one; this is generally when WL movement happens
Soft deadlines for UNC decisions:
  • February and March - in years past, this has been the time when the most decisions were made
  • UNC tends to send out As, then WLs, then Rs, in that order. But I am not sure about this.
  • This is a pandemic cycle so none of these could apply.

That sounds about right from what was on last year's SDN thread, the only thing I'd change is they offer about 300 acceptances by mid (maybe late March this year because of COVID) but only 190 people matriculate in the end and that would include initially accepted and waitlist movement

Edit: Just looked at the google sheet and it seems they have 190 not 180 seats 🙂

Fair point! According to the traffic rules, the AAMC requires schools to issue and report a number of acceptances that is equivalent to the class size, as a hard requirement. That's where I was getting 180 offers. But I did not know that UNC has historically made 300 offers by mid- to late-March. That is awesome!!

Yeah I'm honestly not sure if that 300 includes 110-120 accepted off of waitlist or if it's 300 initially accepted and then some waitlist movement because there's not any clarifying information I found online, but either way it's to our benefit that they have a good number of acceptances over the number of seats 😊

I’m guessing the committee meets on the mondays when they aren’t interviewing candidates so does anyone know if today is an interview day?

Ok...do you know if they actually still meet to discuss applicants on interview days? I was just assuming not since the interview takes all day
I honestly do not know if they meet on interview days but judging last week which had 2 interview days, I would assume not.

Whatttt?! So we are not hearing again this week?
That’s not definitive. I was just making an inference based on when people actually heard back and those happened to be the weeks where interviews weren’t being conducted (the ones I knew about). If this is incorrect, I definitely apologize for spreading false info!

No this is much appreciated! I’m just sad at the possibility that we may need to wait longer. 😩

how did you find out that today was the last one?
I just assumed it was the last because on the interview portal february 1st was the last highlighted date and someone here told me but I am not 100% since I had a message today saying that they know a student from UNC that said interviews go into March. So don't take my word I'm just trying to clear my doubt if anybody knew in case I was wrong.

Yea that’s confusing because even the website says interviews are conducted Sept.-Feb. Maybe they actually do extend it to March but only say feb. on the website? Not sure how to explain that but 🤷🏽‍♀️

The more ya’lls write on here the more I start checking my portal like crazy. And I impatiently await the decision.

In answer to the questions about today being the last day of interviews- I was the one who said that earlier on this page, as I was involved in interviews this year and today's were the last ones on our schedule. If they are conducting more, they haven't asked for students to be involved like all the other interview dates.

Do they meet to make decisions on the day they interview?
