Notes I jotted down from the info session today for the CDU MD Program
  1. 60 interviews spots left (interviews are closed file)
  2. 140 interviews have been given
  3. 200 interviews in total expected for this cycle (for 60 seats)
  4. Biochemistry requirement has been changed to 1 semester instead of 1 year
  5. 1 Year of Calculus is still required (Calculus 1 AND Calculus 2)
  6. Concerning financial aid, Dr. Loeza said tuition is $69k and not to expect it to be free tuition for the inaugural class; the Dean of CDU Medicine also confirmed this and said federal loan packages will be available based on resources available

Second Look is expected to be April 14th, 2023 for accepted students

No on-campus housing

We are expected to do a research project (with a thesis and presentation) during MS4

Secondaries were automatically given for this cycle (no screening)

Because everyone not going to be able to take out private loans at ease

Small admissions staff, sounds like just two people
All communications (thank-you notes, updates etc) thru admissions office
Likely research requirement for graduation
Early July start date

Guess I wasted an app. I have one semester of Calculus and Quantitative Analysis but I guess that won't cut it. Thanks for the information.

Would they take AP credit for Calc? For example if we took a year of Calc AB in high school

No waived tuition. The Dean said that they don't have the same access funds like Kaiser does. They will keep looking, but it seems that it won't be a guarantee at all so be prepared to pay full tuition.

I was hoping to possibly have a chance for the LA Care Scholarship [full tuition scholarship], but that is only given to students living in LA County (as stated by the dean)

Can anyone from LA comment on cost of living? 69K is pretty steeps if COL is also super high (I assume it is given the area). I haven't gotten an II yet but this doesn't look promising anymore.

If this is your only A, you take it. Figure out the cost after. I know it's a scary thought but you don't know if you'll get an A the next cycle. And delaying a year of practicing is losing out on $250K salary, minimum.

Are there any programs in California that can help low-income med students in the state in terms of living expenses/food? The COL is so high (If anyone is from the area or just has general knowledge)

You'll likely qualify for CalFresh (SNAP), probably medical too. If you get in I'm sure the school will have resources to make sure you aren't struggling. You might not be living large and going to Europe for winter break like some other med students, but you'll also not be homeless and always wondering where your next meal will be.

I’m wondering if they expect us to enroll in a 4-week June Calc course since school starts in July, or if they expect us to take Calc at their institution during M1 on a conditional agreement.. ?

At this point… whatever happens, happens.

Yea if I were to get conditionally accepted and hadn’t taken calc yet I’d be looking up whatever University of Phoenix calc course and see if I could finish before the deadline. I wouldn’t let 1 silly course stand in the way between becoming a physician.

Someone who is from a neighborhood friendly east coast city.. where do you recommend to stay in LA? I’m not used to hood life lol
 
Check Long Beach/ downey area. Anywhere with a 562 area code is pretty safe lmao. Carson isn’t too bad either. LA traffic is another beast so you don’t wanna venture too far. The closer you get to like Hollywood /down town LA expect a longer commute. But good to start searching now . Trying to get approved is a process. And a lot of places want 3x rent as income and a 720 credit score (just my experience) so might need a co-signer if you don’t qualify. For the masters program a few students lived in the Lorenzo (USC housing) it’s expensive af though.

Public transportation exists it’s just not the typical mode of transport. But CDU is right next to a metro station . Just wouldn’t take it after dark. Ubers can also add up . But our gas was 7$ a gallon a few months ago so LA is just gonna be expensive lol.

Of course, it's LA. The CDU campus is basically in Willowbrook, but it is surrounded by Compton and Watts. The area is definitely not the safest. You need a car to get around, and the traffic to campus is terrible most of the time (i.e., the 105 during rush hour is a nightmare). I definitely would not use public transportation if you are not from the area.

Also, how worth it is Pass/Fail ranking for medical school? So far, that is a major factor keeping my interest for the school if the tuition is $69k, but does it outweigh going to one that does ranking if you want to leave competitive specialties on the table?
