2022-2023 Minnesota

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Someone feel free to correct me, but I recall them saying that all interviews prior to 12/9 would be considered for that date. They’ll probably not be interviewing too close to that date because of that strict timeline, but that’s just me speculating.
They are continuing the normal Tues/Thurs interview schedule through that date. Really doubt they will be able to give decisions to people interviewing in the week or two before Dec 9, but would love to be proven wrong here.

closed file. more info should be in the email they sent you.

My question - how much does interview weigh in the whole application? I don't think I did very well 🙁

SECOND REVIEW

Following your interview, each application is evaluated holistically for all University of Minnesota Medical School Admissions Competencies for Entering Medical Students. The reviewers will consider comments from the pre-screen, first review and interview in addition to all of your other application materials including the academic profile, experiences, and letters of evaluation.

As context for the delays in decisions y'all have been experiencing, this is not new. It has been a problem for the three cycles prior to this current one. Personally, I would take any stated time line with a grain of salt.

Agreed... at my interview date they moved the goalposts again regarding when they hoped to get decisions out (mid December as opposed to the Nov date listed on MSAR). They even made a comment that "hopefully you will hear in December because you are an earlier interview date" when we interviewed Oct 13... feels like plenty of time to have a decision by mid December. I wouldn't be surprised if it changes again.

It’s not every Tuesday and Thursday, but in general that’s when they are scheduled. If the most recent IIs mentioned here are indicative of how far out they are scheduling (mid-November), they’ve only sent out about half of the total IIs for this cycle.

Update for future SDN historians/ applicants interviewing prior to Dec 9:

During my early Nov interview admissions said that some applicants from my interview day will find out on Dec 9 and the rest Feb 15.

If I recall correctly they hope everyone who interviews before the Feb cutoff finds out on Feb 15. They also said our group was "borderline" so im guessing the probability of getting a decision before Dec 9 will continue to decrease.

Good luck to everyone!

Does anybody know if UMinnesota has any kind of ranking system for OOS states? I know some schools give preference to neighboring states, so just wondering if that might boost a fellow Midwest resident's chances over other OOS applicants?

I'm not sure if there is any ranking system, but per MSAR last year's class had students from North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. I interviewed there this year with an MCAT score pretty close to the bottom of their range and I am a WI resident. My interviewer had done undegrad at UW-Madison. Doesn't seem too far fetched to think there might be something like that!

I'm sorry about that bub. Does the rejection email tell you if you made it to their second stage of review? Do people even get an email after the first round of review?
It’s okay I have an acceptance else where.

But this is how the rejection read:

“Thank you for your application to the University of Minnesota Medical School MD Program. You are receiving this letter because you applied to the UMN Medical School and one of the three following pathways; Urban Underserved, Immigrant and Refugee Health, and/or 2SLGBTQIA+. Your application was reviewed by the Twin Cities Admissions Committee as an applicant to the three aforementioned pathways. We have completed our final review of your application. Regretfully, we are unable to offer you an interview for a position in the entering class.

If you applied to the Rural or Indigenous Pathways, you will receive a separate decision letter from the Duluth Admissions Committee.”

It sounds like you made it to their final review stage 🙂! I don't know if that gives you any kind of reassurance, but it would definitely make me feel better. I'm really hopeful for UMinnesota.

How did you guys prepare for the MMI?
I've just been going through some practice questions out-loud so I can practice talking through decision-making and ethical issues. However, I don't prepare that much as I tend to do much better on interviews when I don't prepare as I tend to sound scripted.

How much movement related to Duluth this cycle? Haven't seen much here, and nothing on the Duluth specific thread.

Quick update - during the interview today they mentioned that it's very unlikely our interview date (Nov 15) will hear back on December 9th, much more likely to hear back on February 15th. Just wanted to update for anyone wondering about when their future interview date will hear back!

Thanks for the update. I'm pretty confident I'll be in for the long wait with you. Time to re-read some of Pema Chodron's books on living with uncertainty 😅.

Has anyone experienced the turnaround time for decisions in MSTP admissions? Wondering if it's similarly delayed

My application status still says "your application has been submitted" with no updates since I submitted my secondary. Will that status change when it's under review, or does that pretty much stay the same until I get II/R?

Do y'all think people who submitted at the end of August have a chance / will hear back? 🙁

Is my understanding correct that those of us who interviewed early/mid-October will hear back on whether we are accepted December 9th and that we can be rejected or waitlisted any time outside of Dec. 9? Thanks in advance!

So will all applicants that interviewed by mid October hear back on December 9 or just those that are accepted?

Accept - We will make official offers to applicants accepted to the University of Minnesota Medical School on December 9, 2022 and February 15, 2023. All remaining decisions will go out periodically through May. You’ll need to accept your offer(s) within two weeks.

Once the class is full, new acceptances will not be made until after April 30. By April 30, applicants with multiple acceptances must confirm their intent to matriculate to one school and give up all other acceptance offers.

Can someone clarify this for me, I am new to this all but if we accept the offer, we can still accept offers from other schools correct? We just have to narrow it down to one eventually?

  1. No offer is binding, by February if you have more than 3 you need to narrow it down to your top 3... there will be a tool on your AMCAS account to do so.
  2. Then by April 30 you will need to pick one of those 3.
  3. The one you pick in April is binding unless you were acepted elsewhere off a school waiting list. This is why waitlist movement picks up around MAY.
  4. The Caveat is that some school deposits might not be refundable, and always read your offer letter carefully.
  5. I hope this helps.

So will they release acceptances ONLY on 12/9 and 2/15? If it’s a WL/R they won’t release them on those dates technically?

****All remaining decisions will go out periodically through May****
  • They only have so many interview slots likely after the last interview they will do all the pre-II rejections.
  • Post II and WL can be anytime until MAY.
  • I know someone who got an II in March and was Accepted in June a few cycles ago.

Anyone know if it’s possible to get accepted 12/9 if we interview earlier in December?
