From my understanding it’s single admission. Once you match that is the school you will go to.

It’s not like with the RD match process where spots might open up when other students go OOS. JAMP students can only participate in TMDSAS and with each other
 
I know that March is a long ways away, but is anyone else thinking of ranking McGovern over BCM and Southwestern?

I would rank McGovern over Baylor. I want to do oncology, and MD Anderson is more closely tied to McGovern. Plus the temple/tmc campus thing is really throwing me for Baylor

Well, speaking from a complete lack of experience, I can confidently say Baylor will open a lot more doors than McGovern.

Source: talking out of my a**, but Baylor is THE most prestigious place in TX.

So for MD Anderson, this isn’t really two. Both medical schools do clinical rotations at that site and are affiliated with the school.

Also, if you look at the current fellows at MD Anderson, 4 went to BCM and only 2 went to McGovern (if that means anything at all).

BCM can also open you up to more “prestigious” academic IM residencies than McGovern (both schools will still provide amazing opportunities) and you have to complete an IM residency before you can apply for oncology fellowship.

With all that said both schools are absolutely amazing and if you are motivated enough can do anything you’d like!

Lol, I did not realize saying McGovern > Baylor would invoke such quick/strong reactions.
  • I know the IM to onc pathway. That is what shadowing is for, right? 😉
  • UTH and MDA are directly connected since both are part of the UT system. This matters for ease of getting non-clinical rotation experiences like shadowing MDA doctors
  • From work experience, I know UTH's culture fits me much better.
  • UTH is cheaper than Baylor. Not by much, but not by a little either

  • Prestige of residency program is the last factor I would consider when selecting a program.

I never said that you should choose BCM over McGovern and I never disputed any of the other points you presented. I was just trying to clarify your one point about the MD Anderson connection with BCM/UT Houston which isn't necessarily true. Not really sure where you got that my response was "strong" lol. I'm glad you thought about them both tho and I hope you match to your top choice!

Also you can literally just go through the list of fellows (1st - 3rd year) and you can see all current fellows. By doing so, you can see that there is a neglible difference between BCM and McGovern in terms of if a school will affect your chances 🙂

Yeah no worries! I just wanted to clarify that MD Anderson does have a strong working relationship with Baylor. I actually believe MD Anderson and BCM have been associated longer with each other than MDA and McGovern. Regardless, I am detracting from this thread so I apologize!
 
Baylor has reasonably good ties with MD Anderson. Their residency programs have alignments with MD Anderson like the attached.

It is not to say you cant go into Baylor for this type of residency from somewhere else but just to show they have alignment with MD Anderson for residencies and fellowships which means that they also have relationships for medical school education.

I am not in Baylor marketing but I dont want people to assume things that they are not fully clear on when making decisions (which is only possible if one has both admissions).
 
I did not mean to imply in my original post that MDA and BCM have no interactions. To be honest, the Baylor-MDA residency is awesome, but the temple/tmc campus thing is really scaring me away

UTH and Baylor would definitely have different costs for OOS since UTH would give instate tuition for OOS. I am not sure where a big difference in cost is between the two for IS.

UTH offers cheap housing which prioritizes UTH students over BCM ones (BCM can apply for it as well) and UTH shuttle/amenities are only free to UTH students.

Assuming you don't split with a roommate, it's roughly $700 per month for UTH's 1b/1b vs $1200 per month for 1b/1b if you rent outside UTH in the TMC. If you go a little further out, of course, it gets much cheaper.

Are all UTH students guaranteed housing? I have heard it is hard to get this housing.

On interview day they made it sound like few students actually get this housing. You usually have to be put on a waitlist, and the students I spoke to with said only those who prematched typically get off the waitlist as those who get in on Match day are unlikely to get off the waitlist (as the waitlist is quite large by that time).

I know guys who rented large homes with 5-6 people together because they didnt get this housing and stayed roommates for 3-4 years.
 
What type of traditional interview format McGovern is using this cycle - Closed file or Open file ?

They have your app and secondary essays but are blind to GPA/MCAT. Side note: they can see how many times you took the MCAT but not the score.

weird. if they dont need to see your mcat, why do they need to know how many times.
