2023-2024 UT Southwestern (UTSW)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey all! I applied mstp and md, received an MD interview a few weeks ago. super grateful !!! 🙂 but was wondering if this means im no longer in the mstp running? idk whether to keep my hopes up. im IS if that matters

I know it's early in the cycle for interviews, but should I be worried if I haven't heard back from UTSW or does this mean I still have a chance for later interviews? IS, LM 76, submitted 08/06

While your completion date is ok, probably a couple thousand got theirs in before you so have probably a while to wait.

Can anyone who has interviewed here offer any insight or advice for going into it?
My stock answer:
In the first post of every school-specific thread, there is an Interview Feedback link.
If you read that, you will see not only the type of interview (1:1 or MMI), but the impression of the interview day from past applicants and even some samples of questions asked.

What @wysdoc said. UTSW is known to interview high stat and some institutional needs students early since what they consider group 2 is more holistic based review as they claimed in the past. Instate students meeting approximately LM 74 or higher meet the group 1 category.

Apparently division 1 football stars meet institutional needs. We just havent seen any come by until this year.
I am an instate applicant with LM of 74.7 and have meaningful experience with my volunteering, shadowing, and research. I sent my secondary application around mid-July. I haven't heard back from UTSW, I am hoping they will review my application and give me an opportunity for an interview. Based on high median MCAT of UTSW admitted students, group-1 category could be probably above 75 or 76.

It's a traditional interview, 25 min, one on one, open file. Two interviews.

There's no specific advice for UTSW vs other open file trad interview schools. I would emphasize why you want to attend UTSW, since UTSW ends up competing with Baylor and prestigious OOS schools for yield. Expect to answer most of the traditional interview questions, as well as questions about anything you put in your application.

That's about all I can say. Good luck!

kinda feel like i bombed my interview lol. didn’t really vibe with my interviewers and felt like I was rushing through the whole thing. kinda sucks bc it was my only II and basically opportunity of a lifetime 🥲
@wysdoc mentioned that they’ll look at entire file for admissions and interview is just another component. As @texasvandy wrote other schools will be calling, probably you could start practicing some interview sections with friends and university premed advisors.

Does UTSW track attendance in the information sessions as a mark of demonstrated interest in evaluating applicants?

Not accessible for my 8-5 job either, I don't see any use in them taking attendance for these.

Can a current applicant tell me how you are hearing about these information sessions? In emails from the school?

Two of the other TMDSAS schools have a required attendance at an information session as part of their interview process:
UTMB requires attendance at a virtual session (several hours of presentations & a chance to ask questions) before the virtual MMI day.
UTRGV requires an in-person campus session before the evaluative virtual 1:1 interviews.

As far as I know the UTSW information sessions are for your own interest and not mandatory.

Right, I am not sure UTSW sessions are part of interviews.

I would also like to add that TAMU also requires a mandatory info session.

On the applicant portal there is a list of future info sessions (throughout the cycle). These include student panels, financial aid, and research opportunities info.

Most of these sessions are from 4-5pm CST and are clearly optional but there is a box to check if you choose to attend a particular session. I'm assuming this part is what is worrying everybody

I don't see this in my portal?

Is this for people who have been invited to interview or already completed?

They seem to be part of the interview if they are having student panels and financial aid.

The portion opened up for me after I received an ii

How do Texas schools view California residents? is there resentment/bias from Californians moving into Texas and changing everything? I just want to know if I'd be expected to explain myself as a Californian if I get an interview.
No bias as long as you don't start every sentence with "Well, in CaliFORnia we did it this way..."
TMDSAS schools matriculate at most 10% OOS in each class.

I would read them as required but allowing you to pick and choose any session if they are giving you more than one session for the same kind. In the past they used to be part of your interview day.

Many Californians are admitted and attend Texas schools each year.

I have found the sessions to be pretty helpful, but they're just Zoom broadcasts. You don't actually "join" the call as a participant- just a listener with no camera or mic option. If you have the ability, I would turn it on during your class/job and let it play in the background with the volume off while you do other things. It does ask for your name and email when you join the call, so they have the ability to track attendance if they want to.

Appreciate the info. I'd imagine the Q&A sessions aren't broadcasts though.

Makes sense! Will try to attend more of these.

My current undergrad school is not in California or Texas, but my parents got a job in Texas, hence sold home in California, left California for good and relocated to Texas. Luckily that timeline made me to qualify for Texas resident. I spent two summers in Texas and had the opportunity to volunteer at hospital in Texas during summer. I am not sure whether recent movers are viewed differently. I applied to only 1/2 dozen Out of Texas schools and hoping I will get in Texas med schools. People wise, I don’t see much difference between California and Texas. Texas has some local authentic food, and better Grocery store ( H‑E‑B ). California has better beaches and also access to snow mountain.

The info sessions for applicants who are post-interview are optional. If you want to be safe, attend 1. Dont' go to all of them, because UTSW does like 1 a month if I recall correctly.

You'll be viewed as in-state

Don't know about the autoinvite thing lol. I have an LM of 80 and decent ECs. Got a couple of interviews from Texas schools so far but silence from UTSW.
I believe the Group 1 auto invite thing no longer exists. It's not in the admissions policies anymore.

It was never there since they hide some of these documents elsewhere.

The autoinvite has been changed to review required even for group 1 and they still do high stats in the first few rounds.

I just started working on research dealing with making and applying relevant statistical models in glioblastoma imaging using genomic sequencing. I am working with a data science professor and a radiation oncologist physician who currently works at UTSW. Would this be something to include in an update letter. I know UTSW values research. Thanks!

Sure, but I personally wouldn't send an update letter until you are post interview.

They do value research, but they don't value update letters (or even accept them, though some have told me I'm wrong about this).
Their modus operandi is more like "don't call us, we'll call you"
