2023-2024 UT Southwestern (UTSW)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How soon should you send update letters? I’m a bit confused on when the best time would be.
Only if you have something new & significant to write about, or if you have already interviewed and want to let them know how perfect this school is for you.

Is it true that UTSW is a gunner school and that there is not that much of a class culture here because that's what I've been hearing

Lot of random people on SDN on the past years thread + a friend that goes there
Are gunners your peeps? You could fit in LOL

edit:
I wanna add that this is just me joining in the chisme and not an official moderator opinion.

Are persistent rumors true, or are they just persistent rumors?
Is the high GPA and MCAT profile of this school the reason for the persistent stereotype?
Are the people who say UTSW students are gunners only saying so because of "sour grapes" because they didn't get in?
Are they saying so because now that they are at UTSW they feel that the pressure and competition they felt getting into this school is truly never-ending?

I have known UTSW students IRL who do fit the snobby elitist image, as well as some who are quietly capable and not at all braggadocious.
In the end there is no one stereotype that describes a classful of individuals, while there may be some truth to what you hear about a general atmosphere of pressure at a school itself.

If any current UTSW students care to comment under the SDN shield of anonymity, current applicants might be interested in your impressions.

Is there any hope for a II at this point in the cycle?
Yes but UTSW efficiently usually sends out their last invitations by the end of November.
Most other TMDSAS schools keep inviting through Dec or Jan

LOL, Here we go again...

Most of my classmates are normal/nerdy. A few people are gunners aka would sabotage others to help themselves. Those are the very small minority and for the most part we collaborate--for example, people often post their Anki decks or other resources for classes on our internal "O Drive" that is shared with the whole class.

There's good colleges culture (UTSW splits each class into 6 colleges). Class-wide culture, this depends on your class. It's also hard to tell with COVID impacting the MS3s/MS4s' experiences, especially the latter since MS4s started 100% online and never really met each other

I will repeat my advice to go visit UTSW in person during the admitted student days and see for yourself. The current MS1s/MS2s are the ones who've had the "whole experience" and would be good to talk with. There will be a few admit days this month, and I think one each in Dec, Jan, March, and April.

However, I will say that UTSW's curriculum is harder/more rigorous than most medical schools. Add to that the very intelligent peers, and you might not be the top of your class for the first time in your life-- this made some people very unhappy.

That being said, the preclerkship curriculum really prepares you well for the rest of your career, and it shows in our ability to care well for patients, what med students contribute on clerkships, STEP 2 scores, residency placements, etc. So if you want an easy med school experience, don't pick UTSW. But if you want a great experience, come join us!

Can't emphasize this enough. Each class will be different and one can see the students they will be with next 4 years when you go to these admitted students events to figure out if you will be happy with that crowd. Since this happens before match and many admitted students usually have other admissions not everyone who shows up will end up in your class. There will be others who dont show up because they are in OOS college or get in through match and so 80-90% will be in that class.

Adding on my opinion as a current MS1. The gunner thing truly depends on the class, I’ll say that our batch seems to be very social/friendly. I don’t feel like it’s hard to talk to anybody in our class, everyone is very welcoming and willing to help you out with anything if you ask. From what I understand, the deans have noticed this and are doing their best to attract a similar class this year.

We all share resources, tell each other if there’s messed up anki cards in a deck, help each other study in anatomy lab. As the other user said, it seems to be a more rigorous/difficult preclinical than other schools but it’s still not impossible. You will still have free time if you’re smart about prioritizing things.

Some people study throughout the week, some people cram right before the exams/quizzes but somehow it seems to be working out for the majority of us.

My overall opinion on the school is that I love it here, all of my classmates are amazing and I feel like there’s an abundance of resources to help me succeed. The curriculum is hard but doable.

Feel free to ask if you have anymore questions, I’ll be around.

This is an appeal to applicants who have taken Casper for admission to University of Texas Southwestern SOM.

Complete the 2023 Situational Judgment Test Experience survey.

HPSA/SDN has the 2023 SJT Experience Survey available to anyone preparing for SJTs (especially Casper and PREview). If you completed the 2022 survey, you are welcome to go ahead and complete the survey again. This survey consists of multiple pages and will take up to 10 minutes. You can also place yourself on a waitlist for a study focusing more on school-run SJTs run through platforms like Kira Talent, to be released later in the year.

Your feedback matters!
We learned a lot about how applicants prepared for Casper and PREview last year, but the number of PREview schools has almost doubled this cycle! Over 20% of all AMCAS applicants will likely have taken PREview, and up to 90% of all medical school applicants will likely have taken Casper this cycle (according to Acuity Insights). This does not include applicants in non-medical professions who have had to take these assessments for admission to physician assistant, anesthesiology assistant, dental, veterinary, pharmacy, or physical therapy programs, where we see a trend that applicants with higher Casper results are preferred. Medical residency applicants are also being asked to complete Acuity Insights Assessments, and very little is known about how program directors use these data. Your responses are vital to get objective insights on how admissions committees value the results of these exams.

Your feedback matters!
We want to hear from as many people as possible, especially those attending or applying outside of medicine (MD/DO). This year saw an expansion of SJTs in admissions, and more information has been made available on preparing for these assessments. We want to stay current with these trends to guide future applicants and students facing these SJTs.

Many of our findings from the 2022 survey align with the NAAHP Testing Task Force report released last summer. This includes concerns about proctoring, consistency of scoring, and concern that applicants are paying for validity research. But we need more student voices to gain a louder voice to advocate for future health professional school applicants.

Your feedback has helped HPSA develop a workshop focused on preparing for SJTs like Casper and PREview. This workshop is part of our Becoming a Student Doctor preparation course, and we have already had some positive results among those who have participated in our mock interview workshops. An updated workshop will be presented at the UC Davis Prehealth Conference on October 14, and we welcome opportunities to present the full-length SJT workshop to your campus!

Fill out this survey and help future applicants become physicians in their chosen profession!

Anyone going to the visit day on Friday? If so, what're you planning to wear?

You're already admitted, so don't worry too much. A nice collared tshirt (and a jacket since it's cold) and long pants is fine.

PLEASE WEAR SNEAKERS/TENNIS SHOES/WALKING SHOES. The UTSW medical district is HUGE and you will probably be walking to tour the hospitals which is awful in non-athletic shoes.

Interviewed yesterday and absolutely fell in love with the school and it’s now my number one. As an ooser who doesn’t participate in the match and can’t indicate interest that way, is utsw a school that favors letter of intent or is it something that wouldn’t move the needle that much given that they also don’t really care about updates? And do they waitlist/reject during the prematch waves in November and December?

UTSW does not reject anyone before the match and may be not even after since they consider everyone interviewed reviewable until July.

It is possible OOS window closes after May 15th because they dont want to figure out if someone is still available since they probably interview very high stat students OOS who are expected to have other admissions. OTOH, they will only keep about 23 OOS admissions at a given time and people have to drop for others to get offers.

Hey! I interviewed yesterday and had a wonderful experience. I was wondering if they accept letters of intent, any thoughts/advice? Thanks!

idk they ended at the beginning of november last year and it's the middle of november now XD
I'll guess one more batch will go out but yeah they usually end up their invitations in November.
Last year last II was November 22.
But as they say in those investment prospectuses, "past performance is not a guarantee of future earnings"

These II are automated right so there probs won't be more coming out later today? (Or for the rest of the season ig)?
