I want to get a medical education in a big city where I can get enough opportunities to match into Radiology in California. I applied to Mayo and just got an interview but I can't see myself living in the super cold Rochester and I am the type of person who enjoys the bar and club scene on the weekends so a big city is a priority for me. I know I will have about 100,000 less debt at Mayo but is it worth it to be miserable for 4 years of my 20s? I love the school and the education of Mayo and would go there in a heartbeat if it was in a bigger city. I loved Saint Louis University and feel that it has the opportunities to get me where I want to go. I just need a little input on what others think🙂
Assuming you perform equally well at both medical schools (Steps, grades, etc), the name of Mayo will get you significantly further in terms of matching into Cali rads programs which are quite competitive..
It doesn't seem like driving to Minneapolis is too far. I'm not sure how the highways are in the winter when it snows though. I have an interview at Mayo next week have similar concerns about being around big cities in terms of having access to a more robust LGBT community.
I see you're a resident; I'm curious to the magnitude of your 'significantly.' I'm thinking in terms of Mayo vs say, JHU, FSM, WashU, HMS, Duke... etc. I know SDN loves Mayo, but does it really compare to the cream of the crop? I know it'll support you if you're interested in a Mayo residency, but how about those other top-notch ultra-competitive ones that the aforementioned support very well?
