Office said they are sending invites through April, interviewing through mid-May....

Nice. Did you try contacting them at all while you were waiting?

Tried sending an update back in December, but they sent a nice reply back saying they don't accept them. 😛 Besides that, nope.

Just got small-pooled today. Complete 10/5. Was anticipating rejection, but I guess there's still hope.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but how full is the class?

Would it be a big disadvantage interviewing in April vs March?

Have you gotten into your top choice (according to your mdapps)? If so, there probably isn't a point interviewing here. But in regards to your question, I'm not sure how full the class is yet, but the admissions office did say they expect to be accepting people post-interview throughout April and into May.

I would expect much of the class to be filled around then. It's getting close to the end of this application year. I think April is when they send out the last invites. If you already have been accepted to a school of your choice, then you could save money instead of coming here for interview. Good luck!

Thanks.
I am interested in schools around the Chicago area, and this is the only one that has offered me an interview.

So I've only had 2 interviews this season (on hold for both), and I don't see myself getting any more, even with a couple open apps still. Honestly, my MCAT was pretty weak (27S both times, I hate V), but I'm IS and have a solid GPA (~3.8, maybe little higher), about the same for both types, and a lot of good outside activities.

But Rosalind Franklin really impressed me beyond belief, and I would love to go here, but I'm on post-interview hold. I got my first hold notice about a month ago, and I expect to get another update....be it whatever they decide to update me on :xf: this Thursday.

I want to send them a letter of intent, and I have some ideas about what I would say, but I want to ensure that I'm coming off professional, and I haven't found any good examples. Could anyone give me some advice or even PM me a sample? Also, I know I'm cutting it short, but I figured that if I email it to the admissions office, the adcom won't reread my app until Wed anyways, so maybe my timing would be alright if I sent it asap?

And yes, if accepted here, I would FULLY intend to matriculate there (Rosalind Franklin), because it just surpassed so many of my expectations. I don't have much to update the school on, because I'm just staying consistent in my involvements and academics, I don't think there's anything wrong with that though.....? I'll be shadowing an orthopedic surgeon in a couple weeks, but that's about it.

Thanks for anyone's help, I could REALLY use it!

(PS, I know I've posted this in another thread forum, but I figured someone here could really give me some solid advice).

Dear Eva. I understand your situation. I think RFU is a pretty good school too and am hoping to matriculate here this year. I don't know if this Thursday is when you will get an update. I would expect them to give any decisions after the middle of March. Most schools are planning to give acceptances after then. Some people have told me it does not matter too much to send in a letter of intent or update. There have been several people on this thread that have send neither and still managed to get accepted. After the interview, there is not much that we could do. Let's just pray that all goes well. :xf: Maybe we could be future classmates here! 🙂

Good luck to you all whichever school you plan to go. its nice to learn that some of you already have multiple acceptances to some good schools.

Dear Eva, I agree with Cookiecrisp1. But if you feel that you should write them a letter, by all means do it. Sorry I can't help you because I have not even interviewed yet. It is well though.

Cookie, have you been accepted at RFU?

My stats are a little higher than yours. I interviewed in November, and was placed on hold in November, December, and now February. I have sent 2 letters of intent/updates.

I am non-traditional so I don't have any grades to tell them about. I mainly said why I'm such a good fit.

However, last cycle I was still on hold, so who knows if it worked or not.

I would like to know if anyone post-interview has been rejected. I know they sent out some pre-interview rejections, but what about post-interview?

yes, maidan... and hope you here some good news somewhere

i am not too sure if many people do want to post if they did get rejected post interview though. i would think that there would be some. in terms of the hold, i am not too sure how the committee accepts students or grants interviews. it seems like a random process.

Oh congrats! When were you accepted. I remember that by the first week of Feb, you were still on hold. Congrats again!

just chiming in.... when i called over there and asked them, they made it sound like they were going to get back to us this week.

Anyways, congrats on getting in and for those who haven't, lets not lose hope!

Did anyone complete the financial aid forms yet? If so, have you received an award letter from CMS yet? Or, do CMS/medical schools not give out financial aid decisions this early?

Ok, I have a delicate question to ask.

I'm trying to decide between RFUMS and Wayne State. From a Canadian perspective, these schools seem the same. They accept a lot of Canadians and require similar stats from us. However, when I'm looking at NIH rankings or USNEWS rankings, it seems like Wayne State is near the Top 50 and RFUMS is usually around 100-110 out of all schools in America.

This concerns me. I know that lists are very subjective but what can explain that discrepancy? I was heavily considering RFUMS over Wayne State before seeing these lists.

Keeping in mind that 4 years at Wayne State will cost me 60k more than at CMS, this is a lot to swallow.

I think this has been pretty thoroughly discussed in this thread. It's fairly meaningless to talk about being ranked 50th versus 100th. As I understand it, the NIH ranking is based on research funding. However, there are plenty of research opportunities available for CMS students if you're interested in that. CMS students do well on the boards and in the match; in my opinion it would be crazy to spend 60K more to go elsewhere.

Of course, if you're from anywhere between Windsor and Toronto, you can easily drive home for the weekend from Wayne State. That may or may not be worth 60K to you.

I usually consider where I want to practice when I finish medical school. If you want to practice in Chicago, then CMS is the obvious choice because it is more well known around there. Is Wayne state close to your hometown? If so Wayne State would be the obvious choice because it will be more well known than RFU.

Personally, go to Wayne state so that I can get your spot at RFU. 😀 Haha, Just kiddddddding.

So you're one of the gunners that write PMs telling people to withdraw so you can take their spot!!! jkjkjk

Though I've read and considered that other thread quite a bit, no one mentioned the discrepancy in ranking.

To see a school in the top 50 vs. a school that is ranked 110 out of 120 schools really weighs on me. Is the NIH ranking purely based on research? Research is something that I'm not really interested in at all.

I know that rankings are subjective and that there are many criteria that are more important than school reputation. With that said, school reputation is still a criteria eventually and I'm wondering if there is really such a night/day difference between the two.

I'm a Canadian so I don't know a lot about how American med schools rank besides the big ones.

Also, is there a vibe like students from RFUMS and Rush get the shaft compared to students from UofC and NW? Wayne State is somewhat appealing in that it's such an underserved community with no other schools in the vicinity.

I worry about an attitude that's like: "oh, you're in chicago? what school? ....oh."

I'm willing to admit my naivety. My concerns might be completely misguided. I just want to make sure that I make the right decision having weighed all the factors. I'm sorry if you're really set on RFUMS and anything I said was offensive. I initially was all set for RFUMS and the ranking aspect opened up this line of questioning in my head.

for me family is an important factor in determining where i will go. RFU is about 15 minutes away.

maybe it may be worth it for you to attend wayne state if it seems worth it to you. (many applicants will be happy for an open spot at RFU! 🙂 )and for all the other applicants on here, don't lose hope. pray for the best!

U of C, and to a lesser extent Northwestern, are much more prestigious than any of the other schools in Chicago. In addition to CMS and Rush, that includes Loyola, UIC, and Midwestern (Osteopathic). However, you're not trying to decide between CMS and U of C, so I'm not sure how it's relevant.

Finally small pooled today, 3 and a half months after being complete!

I can understand where the prestige factor can tip the scales of one school over another -- for example, if you're trying to decide between Harvard/John Hopkins over your state school. However, in this case you're comparing Wayne State (not in the top 50) with RFU (not in the top 50 either). 😛 In my mind, they're pretty freaking equal. Choose the one that you'll be happiest attending.

This. There's a big divide between U of C + NW and the rest in Chicago schools in terms of rank. However, the rankings really only matter in terms of research and chances for matching into specialities that place extra focus on research (derm, patho, rad onc.). This is NOT to say that RF, Rush, UIC, Loyola, etc. could not provide ample research opportunities, just that it may be a more uphill battle.

But like Keyzer said, you're not choosing between U of C and RF so the practical difference really between Wayne and RF with regards to ranking is minimal. Go by what fits your goals and which school fit you more.

Wow, you seem to be a lot concerned about what people would say. You should never lose focus of why you want to become a doctor...is it because of the respect you'll get from people or is there a more patient-centered, change-the-world reason? Any US med school would get you there as long as it is accredited - which I believe they all are. So please lose this ranking attittude and be grateful that you have been accepted to at least one med school. There are a lot of people in this forum that would give something precious to be where you are right now.

But if ranking is very important to you and money is no object, then consider Wayne State, because like you said, unlike RFUMS, Wayne State does not have other medical schools in the area that make would make it look bad.

Yes, the NIH ranking is simply a measure of research funding. Here is the NIH list.

So you're one of the gunners that write PMs telling people to withdraw so you can take their spot!!! jkjkjk

Wow... Do people actually do that? I would never honestly say that to anyone!

Ok - so I have a question for you. Lets say you go to your primary care Dr, cuz your tummy hurts. He says you can go to one of these 2 GI's. Do you look up the GI's on the internet and say OK, this guy graduated in 1976 from RFU... hm... what was RFU ranked in 1975. This other guy went to Wayne State in 1985.... Hm... What was Wayne State ranked in 1985. That way I can see how smart they were required to be to get into med school................. Maybe I'm the only one, but if a doctor I trust says hes good, then I trust him. I don't say No... I don't want to see a dr who went to RFU because its in the bottom ranking of schools.

Being a good doctor has way more to do then what school you went to. It has to do with how hard you try, how easy you learn, as well as internships and residencies.

However, if rankings are that important to you, then you already made up your mind. You would just rather someone else make the decision for you.

Personally Rankings are almost meaningless to me. The people who do the rankings do not sit in the class and see how well the professors teach. They do not look at the hospitals associated with the schools.
Good luck with your decisions...

Wow, you seem to be a lot concerned about what people would say. You should never lose focus of why you want to become a doctor...

I really feel like it's unfair to question my motives to go into medicine. I can't see how you'd get that impression based on the way that I asked the question. Seeing as how residency placements do rank school as one of their criteria, I think it's reasonable to try to find out whether going to either school would give me an advantage.

However, if rankings are that important to you, then you already made up your mind. You would just rather someone else make the decision for you.

That's the thing, I didn't know exactly what the rankings meant. Since people in this thread indicate that the NIH rankings are based solely on research funding, I don't think I put as much weight into that as say an evaluation based on surveys done by those working with residents from RFUMS on their abilities in a clinical setting.

haha yeah man some people need to take it down 50 notches or so.

NIH ranking means nothing to me when I see Harvard at 26.

. For the most past, I was reacting to this statement you made: "I worry about an attitude that's like: "oh, you're in chicago? what school? ....oh."

Honestly, that statement is a concern for me too. I tell people I got into med school and they go "where?" I say RF and they have NO idea where that is and if I say CMS they think I mean U of I chicago or U of Chicago. Which means I get to correct them and tell them that no it's a smaller school, etc etc. It's kinda annoying having to explain to people where you're going when the school has very little name recognition and it's not like you can say "o it's this smaller school that's really highly ranked" A lay person tends to assume that if they haven't heard of it, it's some tiny nobody school that isn't hard to get into.

obviously at the end of the day it's a med school and you'll be a doctor but it's not like the concern has never popped into my head

I have to come to 4gone's defense knowing that person from a different online forum. As Canadians we aren't totally 100% aware of the significance of rankings or schools in the US as in Canada, there is no direct comparison. Although when you look a lot into US culture, your Alma Mater is important. As an example, just by watching sports games you see athletes being introduced with what college they went to, which to us is a non-issue for the most part.

For Canadians going to US schools for MD, possibly considering residency and staying in the US afterwards, it may possibly be an uphill battle to get spots. Not all schools sponsor foreign students with the H1B visa allowing the person to stay in the US following residency. While getting a residency spot with the other type of visa (J1) may be nice, the prospect of going back to your home country after for a mandatory min of 2 years possibly isn't that appealing. You can get around that, but I don't think there is a high degree of need for many specific specialties in already underserved areas.

As international people, we may be looking for an edge in residency apps, and if rankings are taken seriously (as we perceive them to be) and if the person wants to stay in the US, then choosing a school with a notable ranking may be something to consider in choosing where to do the MD.

I hear you...and I'm international too. RFU may not be as well known as the UofC or UofM to regular people, but I believe that hospital administrators, NRMP, and ECFMG know about RFU and these are the people/organizations that matter. Yes, there is competition for limited spots, but there are also a lot of FMGs and US-trained international students that get into residencies and even to competitive residencies like neurosurgery and dermatology. If they did it, you and I definitely can.
Granted, these issues are important to consider, but you cannot think too far ahead. The main thing is to concentrate and make sure you do well on the boards, and beef up your resume so that you can be outstanding and look distinguished to the people who would interview you. Heck, you have not even dealt with anatomy or neuroscience yet!
This is my 2 cents.

This drives me nuts, seriously! Here I am subscribing to this thread since I have been small pool awhile back waiting to read if there is any movement at RFU, you guys are talking about RFU vs. Wayne State..Seriously? I truly feel that this discussion ought to be on a thread on its own as many have done...A possible title could have been "RFU vs. Wayne State." This way, you guys would not force me reading shyt I don't care about.

Please move this RFU vs Wayne State on a thread on its own! Any moderator???

Thank you!

Haha... If you search there is already a RFU vs Wayne State thread and the person who started this debate posted in that one also.

Oh My!!! Someone seriously has a lot of time on his/her hand! Do you know who moderate this thread? It's getting very annoying...this page alone contains a lot of crap that needs to be deleted since they have nothing to do with the secondary, interview, acceptance, rejection, or wait-listed!
