Congratulations! Definitely not sad at all! Also, it looks like we interviewed on the same day...I am glad to hear that it went well for you! Do you think that you will end up at SLU in the Fall?

Yes I will be going there. Since I am doing my under grad there I know quite a few people in the med scholars program who are also going there.

Hey everyone, I received an interview invite! woo! And then I discovered this forum...a great resource, but it looks like it brings about a lot of unneeded stress! (I understand though, I'm already getting addicted...)

Anyways, I have a couple of questions for you experts out there.

Do you know how many people are interviewed/accepted? Does IS/OOS matter? Have they filled most of the class?(I am interviewing in late Feb -- interviewing for waitlist?)

Also, my friend is interviewing in LA instead of flying to Saint Louis ... do ya think that's a disadvantage?

Thanks for your time! And good luck to everybody (assuming you don't take my spot 🙂)

IS/OOS shouldn't matter because SLU is a private school. It seems they're still filling the seats. If you do the regional interview, you won't be able to tour the campus or talk with current students, but that shouldn't be too big of a deal. Good luck!

Complete since mid-October and nothing from SLU!!! But I guess no news is good news in this process. I hope I still have a chance...:xf:

You do... I was complete 7/9/09 and totally gave up, and I just got an interview invite today!! Hang in there!

I got an invite today too! I was complete in early september. I see you are from AK, I'm from Seattle...maybe they were waiting until it was closer to the Seattle regional interview??

For all those who wondered about the crime in STL. Here's an example of an email that goes out about once or twice a week from the department of public safety.

Students, staff and faculty,

At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19th, two students were robbed in the alley behind Iggy's. The two students were unloading their car when they were approached by two male subjects. One of the suspects displayed a handgun and announced a robbery. The female victim was robbed of her keys and the male victim was robbed of his wallet. The suspects then ran from the area.

DPS officers were patrolling in the area and observed two possible suspects run to a vehicle that was parked on Laclede. The suspects entered an Oldsmobile Alero with Illinois license plates K168139 and fled north from campus. The vehicle was last seen northbound on Spring from Page Avenue.

The two suspects are described as follows:

Suspect #1 is described as an African American male, in his early 20's, 5'6" to 5'7" tall, approximately 160 pounds, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt. This subject was armed with a small handgun.

Suspect#2 is described as an African American male, in his early 20's, approximately 6'0" tall, 170 to 180 pounds, dark complexion, wearing a black leather jacket.

Officers with the Department of Public Safety and the St. Louis Police are searching the area for the suspects.

newbie,
do you go to slu? And yes those "safety" emails are expected from the DPS every month or so. But you can avoid those situations if you are smart about where you go and at what time you go.

So you guys get those emails every week like newbie says or once every month? If it's former, that's kind of worrisome.

When I interviewed at SLU Dean Willmore mentioned something about a project to renovate some orthopedic building into more student lounge and classroom space. I'm not sure if I'm remembering what he said correctly but does anyone have any info on this?

I used to go to USC in a pretty shady part of LA and we get those same types of DPS notices every 3-4 weeks. It's always the same type of crimes too -- people walking to their cars alone at night and getting robbed or listening to their ipods or using their cell phones and getting them stolen. Use common sense and it's no dangerous than living in any other major city.

Yeah, I think every major city has these kinds of crimes that happen. Especially near big universities. You just have to be careful, especially at nighttime, and I don't think it will be too much of a deal.

My tour guide for SLU said he got robbed right outside his apartment in freshman year or something.

This isn't just a "major city". This is Saint Louis.

Well, it's probably not that different from some parts in Detroit, Brookyln, Washington D.C., Oakland, etc.

If you look at Forbes list of the 15 most dangerous U.S. cities (ranked by # of violent crimes, like robbery, rape, assault per 100k people) - St. Louis isn't even on there. Places like West Palm Beach, Little Rock, Orlando ranked higher (surprisingly there were a lot of Florida cities, lol). Not saying that STL has no crime, but so do a ton of other places.

I think STL gets a lot of bad rep regarding crimes, just because of its name. But I remember my SLU tour guide telling me it's probably not that different from any other major university cities. Sure, there are crimes but lot of those could be avoided by just being smart and being careful. I'm personally not too worried about the crime rate, you just have to be careful.

Washington University, Maryville University, University of Missouri St. Louis.... they are all in STL and do not experience the same crime rate at SLU.

Its not just about following safe habits. More robberies than you think happen in the evening just walking to the parking lot or around aaprtment complexes. That's only avoidable if you would never go outside and how likely is that?'

Forbes list only has cities with 500,000 permanent residents. I don't think St. Louis is even considered by them. Try using the link below. St. Louis used to be number 2 in 2008 and now its 15th in 2009.

Thanks for the response Blue Elmo. Do you know how many interviews they give out and how many students they accept pre-waitlist movement?

I'm not sure. You can check out last year's SLU thread. Just use the Search function, and you should be able to find it. Also, google search eduers.com for med school statistics info.

Yeah could be! It's definitely a relief to get an interview and even nicer that I'll have a shorter trip...

For those who have done a regional interview... was it really only half an hour?

Do they reject pre-interview? I was complete early Sept and emailed the office recently which told me I was still under review...

Yeah, I think they reject pre-interview. Maybe they are backed up.

My interview was only half an hour.

Some people have reported up to one hour.

This worried me, but not so much as my 2x 1-hour UCSD interview is going to.

I wouldn't worry too much about the length of the interview. I remember I was upset after mine, b/c I flew all the way out there, and then my interview was literally 12 minutes. But, I was accepted less than three weeks later, so maybe my interviewer was a no-nonsense kinda guy 🙂

my interview would have been ~20 mins if I didn't doo some things to drag on the conversation. accepted as well.

Geez, that must have been the all-time shortest interview ever, LOL. But congrats!

Just got an invite to interview. Not sure if I will go or not (for money related reasons)... Can anyone convince me?

Congrats! You should go if you have the time and can spare the airfare, hotel fees, etc.

I withdrew from my interview here. Hope somebody else gets my spot.

If I could, I would give my interview to felipe23 and Chemokine7. 🙂

I just submitted my supplemental app and my final letter won't be logged in until next Mon or Tues; but everything is submitted before Feb 15th the due date. I'm still screwed ain't I? Aww BlueElmo that hot pic is gone.

Well, it's pretty late drak, but if you have strong stats and a strong application, maybe you have a chance at an interview.
By the way, my current pic is hot too, you know.😛

yup, that pic is hot too; but, the other one should be the representative of SLU-SOM :meanie:. By the way, today I'm going to ask a hostess of a restaurant out on a date....what should I say to her? I'm planning to say "Helloooooo......COuld I buy some takeouts?" Then, shortly afterward I would say "I haveee a questionn. I'm wondering what are you doing tomorrow? Would you like to have lunch sometimesss?" Would that work? lol

lol...sorry for the junk...On a serious note, I hope they have an interest in me because I believe I'm as strong as anyone. I'm holding two jobs right now....Research coordinator job at UMKC-SOM...Osteoporosis research (10,000 participants recruiment, got 5,000 so far...blood draw, muscle strength test, and DXA scan) and Bone Fracture research (100 participants...blood draw and bone marrow aspiration from the hip) and other secondary functions (protein/DNA extractions, meetings, presenting, etc).....Clinical Lab tech in microbiology and virology at Children's Mercy Hospital doing diagnostic tests and more research....right now doing a research on Trichomonas Vaginalis....grow and find the protozoan parasite from the specimens and report them to the researchers......I'm also currently volunteering and MD shadowing...shadowing the attendings in the ER for 6 months.....May SLU-SOM have mercy on my soul! lol :meanie:

Honestly not sure how focused SLU is on research. My application is obviously not heavily research based. I received an interview 3 weeks after being complete and my interviewer told me he liked my application because I had a lot of strong clinical experiences - both volunteer and paid - and supported my interest in primary care. Obviously the research can't hurt, but make sure it's balanced with good clinical activities as well. Good luck 🙂
