Honestly not sure how focused SLU is on research. My application is obviously not heavily research based. I received an interview 3 weeks after being complete and my interviewer told me he liked my application because I had a lot of strong clinical experiences - both volunteer and paid - and supported my interest in primary care. Obviously the research can't hurt, but make sure it's balanced with good clinical activities as well. Good luck 🙂

As my interviewer put it, "We are here to train good clinicians, not bench researchers. If you want that then go to Wash U." While research certainly can't hurt your chances, SLU wants your focus to be on the clinic.

EDIT: Good luck to you drak.

Interesting take by your interviewer. My interviewer was really interested in my research, she asked me questions about them and had me explain them. She seemed more interested in them than my other interviewers for other schools.
But yes, I also had a good amount of clincal activities.

Yeah I was a bit surprised by what he had to say. My interviewer didn't ask into my research very much compared to other schools. To his defense he did say there were lots of clinical research opportunities... but as far as big labs and bench work go it didn't sound like SLU didn't have a tremendous amount of it compared to major research institutions.

Agreed, the interview day made me feel SLU was more interested in clinical side of medicine, not research. They did put some emphasis on clinical research, but not so much on bench research. But then, that's what WashU is for. Overall though, I feel like there are ample research opportunities for students.

Thanks JonnyD33, BlueElmo, and MiniMoo!.....and MiniMoo...is that you in real life? U r hot! lol...and you are located in Limbo? Is that from Dante's Inferno? I liked that movie a lot....very educational and made me aware of things in life!.......Anyway, yes clnical experience is VERY important!..The reason I'm even applying to SLU-SOM because I was turned down by another SOM (b@5tards! How dare them!? lol)...the dean at that school told me to get clinical experiences.....MD shadowing specifically so I'm doing that right now for 6 months in the ER at Children's Mercy....and starting to like pediatrics a lot (from seeing those cute babies)...my job as Clinical Lab Technician is also clinical but not mainly through patient interaction....I do diagnostic testing......like when the blood sample turns positive for pathogens I have to stain and examine it and find whatever in the blood and then report it to the MDs......same with cerebral spinal fluid and other body fluids....get a bunch of stuff like urine, stool, heart, lungs, kidney, brain absesses.....yea lol....and yea all of the research I'm involved in are Clinical research (human subjects and patients)

1/15 interview. They're taking quite some time. I am so impatient.

Hey,

I interviewed 1/5 and heard back 2/4. They really do stick to the "3-4 weeks" rule.

Good luck!

Weird. I have extensive research, meh clinical experience, lots of physician shadowing. I was stressing my research with my interviewer as well. I was accepted a month later. My stats are competitive for the school, but by no means extraordinary for their numbers.

But yes, my interviewer told me there was ample opportunity for research. Apparently theres a big bound binder somewhere with faculty and their research where you can look them up and get involved.

Nice, they never told us about that. I should go look it up when I'm a student there.

This is probably a dumb question (and too late), but I want to be safe.
SLU does morning and afternoon (11am) interviews correct?
I ask because my itinerary has a big slot for 8am-11am, but is empty and the first thing is the facility tour at 11am. So I should show up just before then, right?

Thanks to whoever replies!

I believe that is correct. Good luck.

For accepted students, have they sent us any other financial aid instructions besides fill out FAFSA?

Not to my knowledge. From my understanding FAFSA is the only thing we have to fill out for SLU.

i have absolutely no research experience. it's never been for me. that being said, i did have IMO a variety of good clinical experiences and i was accepted.

i was also under the impression that they were more concerned with training clinicians instead of researchers; however, they did just build a new research lab though, which was really nice.

I have significant research experience but only a couple of semesters worth clinical volunteer experience. But during my interview I was only asked about my experiences in clinical and had to bring my research up on my own while answering a different question. So I am guessing research is not really important to them.

Probably not basic science research, but I thought they did kind of emphasize clinical research.

I don't know, we talked a lot about research in my interview.

Hmm? Trying to decide whether to attend or not?

yup. I think I will attend.

"This e-mail confirms your interview with a Saint Louis University School
of Medicine representative on xx/xx/2010. The details of your interview
day will appear on your itinerary after you have been assigned to an
interviewer. Information regarding transportation, hotels, student
lodging, etc. can be found in the "Interview Links" option in My
Interview. "

So I have to wait for the times till I get an interviewer assigned?

Yeah. They will send you an email saying that your interviewer was assigned, and you can go online and check your schedule so you know when to report to the school.

HeY! How come I haven't gotten an interview yet?!?!.....Oh wait I just submitted my supplementals lol

I'm getting no love from SLU... love me love me say that you love me

I am thinking about my stay in St Louis. Is the student-hosted lodging program a good thing? It seems relatively cheap, I'll have to pay them $25.

I stayed in Mariott, which was pretty cheap. But that student-hosting thing sounds good too, plus you can interact and talk with a current student.

I just got an email saying I have been placed on the alternate list. I interviewed 1/19/10. Is the alternate list the same thing as the waitlist?

It is. Sorry about that.

Good luck, hope your interview went well.

It worked out very well for me, my student host was awesome. Great person to ask questions about the school/city/interview

Thank you for the information. How did you travel from the airport to student host's place? Taxi? Did your student host provide you ride to the interview place on the day of the interview? It says so in the document.

It's about a month of waiting. Hope you hear the good news.:luck:

I stayed with host, didn't pay him $25, he didn't know about it, he had plenty of interviewees stay with him and never got any money

I had a buddy who lives in St. Louis, so he gave me a ride (could have crashed at his place, but then would have talked all night instead of sleeping and doing any prep for the interview)

Whats likely to happen is your host is going to ask you to take the metro to the stop closest to him/her, then they might pick you up from there..

On the day of the interview, he gave me a ride

Alternate list again, sigh. Grats to all who made it in this year!

sigh...I want an interview invite. do they care at all about updates?
