Sorry buddy.🙁

I'm sorry to hear that. When did you interview?

Thank you for your empathy. It was actually pre-interview despite how much I would like to say I had an interview .

I can not dog the school though.. especially since they invited one of my good friends for an interview and I expect to hear good news!

Good luck to everyone still trucking with SLU:xf:

Sorry to hear about your rejection.....I submitted my supplemental app close to the deadline and my final letter was late due to the snow storms........so I'm in limbo........and I seriously do not freakin care....enjoying my life is the top priority!...everything else can go suck it! lol...on a side note........anyone read Rapid Review Pathology 2nd edition by Edward Goljan? Such a great book...I picked it up and couldn't put it down

Good luck to you too with other schools.:luck:

Just got an invite today. What the hell kind of school is this? Is this like Loma Linda for Catholics? Do they force you to be "religious"?

Not at all. While there are indeed Catholic influences around such as crosses near the doorways and a father with an office in the building... that is about as far as it goes as far as I could tell. I certainly didn't feel like I was having religious dogma shoved down my throat.

They didn't emphasize religious or Jesuit aspects at all. We just saw the campus ministry on our tour, but other than that, you would have thought it was a secular institution. So no need to get worried.

Um, I'm sorry, but I have to respectfully disagree. It's true that they barely said more than a few sentences about religion or religious-related topics, but they also have large 1 foot tall crosses up on the wall in literally every single room I remember being in. And it's not just an innocuous "t" shaped cross, it's the kind with an actual statue of suffering Jesus hanging on it. To people who are Christian, you may not even notice that type of thing, but to non-Christians it is a VERY prominently visible, ever-present indicator of who the school is meant for. While that may not even be the true intention of why those graphic crosses are on every wall, it does come across as a loudly passive-aggressive message to all non-Christians who are there.

That said, I actually liked the school quite a lot, and I really liked all the people there, they were all very welcoming and nice. But that's a different question. They don't "force" you to be religious, but the presence of Christianity at the school is very prominently on display everywhere you go.

Yes, being a Catholic, I guess I kind of take those crosses for granted. But it still stands that they don't force-feed you religious beliefs or teachings. In fact, in my interview day, they didn't bring up the topic of religion even one time. So yes, there are signs of Christianity and whatnot in the buildings (which cannot be avoided since SLU is a Jesuit school), but they don't try to convert you or anything.

I went to a jesuit institution for undergrad, and yes crosses and christian symbols are prominent. that being said, my jesuit professors and the environment were very open. i never felt any pressure to convert (i'm a non-catholic). if anything, i felt like i became more in touch with my spiritual side, which is one of the pillars of the jesuits.

as another jesuit institution, i think slu will have a similar atmosphere.

I'm a catholic...hope they like me lol

I'll have to humbly disagree with that assessment. I'm non Christian and while yes I certainly did notice the crosses I really don't think its that big of a deal. Its not like the school is forcing you to go to mass every Sunday. In no way did I feel like beliefs or teachings were being forced upon me in some aggressive or passive aggressive manner. As it was explained to me by my interviewer, the Jesuit influences of the school drive the school's humanistic driven style of medicine and in no way is a medium for spreading the teachings of Catholicism.

Besides, I thought SLU was much less religious-oriented than Georgetown for example. And it, of course, pales in comparison in that regard to schools like Loma Linda, which are super religious.

Clearly some people are more shocked by these religious icons than others, and more sensitive applicants might be uncomfortable attending.

Just for the record, I found the ubiquitous crosses to be only a very mild sort of this-place-isn't-for-non-christians kind of message. Like I said, overall I really liked everyone there and I felt like I got along really well with everyone and I generally felt comfortable and happy there. It's just that if someone is asking specifically about the presence of religion at SLU, my point is that while it's not forced onto students in any way, at the same time its certainly not absent. It's definitely there.

As a Jesuit institution, it's not surprising it's there. However it's not widespread and/or emphasized.

see.

what's more of an issue about SLU is if you get a question about abortion.

my interviewer asked me if in my dealings in ob/gyn if i had any cases for abortion

it didn't make sense to deny it, so i said yes, there was a case where the embryo was severely malformed and a procedure was performed to dislodge the embryo from the uterine lining.

he asked ''so it was killed?''

i answered "well."

and he stared at me this stare that was followed by a very awkward silence.

has this happened with anyone else?

I didn't have anything like that in my interview. But it must have been awkward.

Wow. Weird.

That reminds me that Georgetown does warn us that you won't be seeing/doing any abortions at the university hospital with the added caveats that you wouldn't do them as a med student anyway. Their affiliated hospitals will give you the opportunity to observe the procedure if you elect.

I'm sure this is no different at SLU, so I'm a bit surprised by the interview. Mine was so benign that it was almost a waste of time.

Fair enough 🙂

My interviewer at SLU told me this exact same thing.

Dear Post-Interviewee or Current Student,
What does SLU want us to know about a Jesuit education? What were your favorite aspects of SLU life? Pros/cons of the school? Anything else that I should know before my interview? Please shoot me a private message if you feel like helping me out!
Thanks

You should check out the Interview Feedback for SLU. Good luck.

anyone have duane moore as an interviewer? if so shoot me a pm about your experience. i am excited for this upcoming interview!!!!!

Does anyone know if they rank people on their waitlist? And are we allowed to find out where we stand on the wait list?

As far as the religious thing - I'm not Christian, and on my way out of SLU after my interview day, I bumped into the father/priest guy and stopped to chat with him, and he was very friendly and welcoming. It's hard to judge from 1 day, but I picked up no force-feeding or preaching of any kind. Obviously there are going to be signs, so if that's not your cup of tea, then I can understand being uncomfortable. But I'm all for learning about different religions and nothing I felt about the school turned me off. Great school and atmosphere. Aside from the ghetto surroundings.

I dont' think they rank people, at least I remember hearing that somewhere. But I'm not sure, you might want to contact the admissions office. And the surroundings aren't that bad.

Thanks for the answer. The ghetto comment was mostly a joke; I don't think SLU's any worse off than most schools. There are bad places in every major city, and minor ones too. But it's all relative. What's ghetto to some people won't be to others. Coming from where I come from (and talking with students from my hometown who've gone to SLU), it actually can be that bad. You just have to know where the bad spots are and avoid them and you're fine.

But like I said, it's all relative. Everyone's going to have their own opinion.

I agree. You just have to be smart about where you are staying/going. Every major city has ghetto spots, like you said.

My glimpses were of a city that was more desolate than ghetto. Truly an industrial midwestern city that is a long way from its glory days.

It reminds me of what I imagined Detroit to be like.

That's what I thought. It was rather desolate, IMO.

That's actually a really good description. I remember, on our tour, looking out the windows at the surrounding neighborhood and just seeing a lot of barren-looking buildings. "Desolate" pretty much sums it up.

On the brighter side it means you will stay inside and study more. 😀

Indeed it is.

from what i recall, this school historically matches lesser students than you'd estimate. when i asked about why this was, the explanation I received was ''this past year many students did not rank enough programs, and hence, did not match''

really? a good match list?

Well looking at their matchlist, a lot of good and competitive residencies were matched at some great schools.

I completed my secondary in October but haven't heard a thing since. Last week, I sent in an update saying that my research was being published (along with a copy of the approved abstract) in hopes that it may persuade them to offer me an interview.

Can anybody out there tell me how long SLU plans on interviewing people? Is there any chance I may get one? Thanks.

If it matters, I am out of state and non-catholic. Stats are solid, but not astronomical. I do have a very solid research and clinical background (I am an EMT).

They are still interviewing. So you might still have a chance. Hopefully you will get an invite sometimes soon.:xf:

Interviewing March 8!! Any advice? And this is definitely just for waitlist, right?

I don't think it's for the waitlist. They're probably still accepting people from interviews. You can check out the Interview Feedback page for tips on interviewing. Good luck.

That's great news! Thanks a lot for the quick feedback.

this is definitely just for waitlist, right?

I think it's still in the window for possible direct acceptance. But even if it were just for a waitlist spot, you still should treat it as if it's a real interview - because it is.

This.👍

Good to hear. I'm from just across the river and SLU has been my goal for a few years.

Wow, random. I thought I had been silently rejected from SLU and I suddenly received an invite this afternoon. I'm interviewing next Tuesday... which is totally kick ass because I had a Southwestern flight credit that expires on Tuesday!

I've had four interviews so far and two of them were in St. Louis, go figure.

Sorry about that. I'm not entirely sure how it works, maybe you could check out last year's thread.

Congrats!!!! First acceptance feels amazing right? May I ask what day you interviewed on? I am still waiting... interviewed on 1/15.

I am absolutely thrilled to have an acceptance. I interviewed on 1/14 at SF. You will probably be hearing back very soon. I wish you the best.
