Not regarding my status or application, but questions about research opportunities and programs at the school we had discussed during the interview. Im just afraid it could be construed in a negative light.
Are you asking for a bit more in depth information regarding a specific point discussed? If so, then that is a legitimate reason to contact them. If it is because you forgot something they said/mentioned (unless it was an off-handed remark) I'd hold off until you hear something back from the school.

Just my 2 cents.

Yes it was more in depth follow up. They had pointed me in a direction to learn more, and after digging I had some further questions based on my reading. Appreciate the input.

I thought I should post this in case anyone was wondering about the prerequisities situation.

I called the admissions office and spoke to Emily (I think that was her name).

She said that advanced courses in the field can substitute for missing semesters. In my case, she said that the second orgo semester can be satisfied by my "reaction kinetics" class (taken through the department of 'chemical engineering and applied chemistry' and classified as CHEM by AMCAS).

She said that lots of applicants do this, and that it is acceptable.

I then asked her about English. She pulled up my file, scanned through all my humanities (philosophy, anthropology, etc) and said that I should be good. She said that the committee has already looked through my record and judged my preparation for medical school to be sufficient.

This is excellent news, but it's also kind of unusual. SLU officially requires 12 credits of humanities and 6 credits of english. I have the humanities, but don't have enough extra ones to fill in for the missing english.

I hope that this doesn't come back to bite me in the behind when someone realizes that they may have made a mistake. 😛

Get it in writing or it didn't happen. 🙂

I had an interview here yesterday and it was an awesome school. They said about 3-4 weeks to hear back. It'd be awesome if it was closer to 3!

Well I interviewed back on October 17 and they told me 3-4 weeks... Then I e-mailed them during week 4 and they told me 4-6 weeks. 6 weeks later (November 28) is when I got my acceptance e-mail. I really hope you hear in 3 weeks, but I don't want them setting you up for disappointment or anxiety lol! Good Luck!

Does anyone know how often they run over their 3-4 week time table?

Hey Guys

I'm an MS4 at SLU here to answer any questions at all!

as for teh question directly above my post. It depends on whenever your interviewer finished their write ups. Then they meet in committee and vote.

Not regarding my status or application, but questions about research opportunities and programs at the school we had discussed during the interview. Im just afraid it could be construed in a negative light.

My perspective is that they gave you that card so that if you wanted to contact them, you would know how to do so.

I say go for it.

Does SLU reject pre-interview? I was complete since end of July w/o an II.

For those of you who have already been accepted, did you have significant research experience? Just wondering...

Some, but not significant and it's not a requirement. I had a little over a year but no pubs.

Heard back 3 weeks after my interview (a couple of days after my interviewer presented me from what he said). Timing depends largely upon how quickly your interviewer gets you presented.

As for my research... I had several years plus presentations and I have a ton of clinical experience.

They also care a lot about their Jesuit mission...

Just accepted today. Interviewed on 10/31.

This may be an overly obvious/dumb question, but who/where do we send our $100 to hold our acceptance? The Office of Admissions? Do we simply send them a check and ask them to hold our acceptance?

no pooling email since mid august, silent rejection?

Check out the attachment "Code of Professional Conduct."

Interviewed 10/25 - still haven't heard anything. Maybe the interviewer is just slower at presenting to the committee.

No.

I do and I was accepted. I currently work in a research lab at Mayo Clinic. However, they aren't ranked very high research-wise and they still attract better than average students numbers-wise. SLU has a stronger focus on clinical skills and care rather than very strong research. However, the new Edward Doisy Research building should hopefully boost SLU's research ranking. They sure deserve a higher ranking in general, SLU's a great school. Kind of unfair how med schools are ranked on research alone pretty much.

I agree with you that SLU is a more clinically-orientated school, but we're actually ranked higher in research (#75) than primary care (#86). Probably because of the new Doisy Research Center, which is pretty awesome.

Has anyone tried writing them an update letter? Did it help?

No.

It seems that based on the average student statistics that SLU should certainly be ranked higher. It seems like a remarkably underrated institution.

JDOC, would you mind sharing why you love SLU, what you don't like about it, and why you chose SLU over other medical schools? I'm sure I speak for all of us SDN'ers when I say it would be VERY appreciated!

I could probably write a lot, but I'll keep it relatively short. I have toagree with what was said earlier by someone. The class has a good group ofpeople. The administration really cares about us. They make sure we get a dayoff every other week (to keep us sane). They got us on a P/F system. Whenpeople complained about the software used to record lectures, they got a new(better) one. Also, I think the curriculum is setup very well. It puts us in agood position to do well on boards - of course, what you get on Step 1 isultimately student dependent. Lastly, it's nice to see that SLU is alwaystrying to improve. E.g. the new research building, the new education union, thetrack/field on the med campus, new standardized patient exam rooms, expandedsim lab, etc.

Not a fan of the tuition, although that's less of an issue because it hasonly risen 2% each year (which is low compared to other schools). Not sure howtuition overall compares to other schools these days. I'm also not a huge fanof SLU hospital. Things will a little better when they go live with EPIC inJune. Also, a fair amount of the rotations are at other hospitals/clinics (youhave some choice in this so you don't have to be at SLU all that often). Andmost of other hospitals/clinics are pretty nice.

I'm from St. Louis so I'm biased in my choice of school location. With thatsaid, I preferred SLU over WashU (no offense to anyone who goes there). Also, Ihave no issues with the "crime" in the area. Never had a problem.Rarely hear about anyone having an issue. It's just like any other mid-sizedcity.

Hope that helps.

I have been very fortunate to get an acceptance this early from St. Louis this morning (Late october interview). As much as I hate to say something like this, but I would really like to wait until all my other interviews are done with and decisions out before making a final decision.

St. Louis, however, requires that we must give a final notice in two weeks. What should I do?

For those who are interested,

MCAT: more than 36
GPA: more than 3.95

You should accept and send in your $100 tuition deposit. You can always withdraw your application prior to May 15 for a full refund.

Anything you can tell us about how the clinical years are (in terms of scut, working with the residents and attendings, grading, what you get to do as a student, etc...)?

Same question for girlofgrace, SLUSOMMS4, and any other SLU students helping us out here if you guys have anything to say about it. Thanks!

Thank you for your reply. I am wondering though....if I were to accept SLU now and get a refund later, it would show up (based on what I have been told at my interview at WashU) at all my other schools which I have interviewed at or will be interviewing. Would that negatively affect their perception of me as an applicant?

🙂

Good luck with your application! MD2016!

Wait really? That's violates our privacy no?

Yeah I thought so too at first. However, everything in your AMCAS (school application, interview invites, waitlist...etc) is shared between every single school which you applied too 🙁 I just confirmed that with AMCAS itself again.

3rd yeard is pretty resident/attending dependent. Just depends on who is on service while you are on the rotation. I haven't done any "scut work." The general routine is that you pre-round (just like the interns/residents) and then present your patient(s) to the attending. Obviously, this routine depends on what rotation you are on, etc. Grading is about 50:50 shelf and evals (or both are a little less than 50% and then the rest is made up with other small things). Evals are pretty hit or miss. If you happen to work with a resident/attending that grades easily, then you're golden. The opposite is true too. It averages out in the end (I hope, at least).

A close friend of mine (I swear its not me, she just doesnt want to come on and ask herself) applied here OOS with good stats but hasn't heard anything in about two months. Should she get in touch with the admissions office and reaffirm her interest? Has anyone tried this?

No, schools know many applicants will receive many offers. Plus, come January (I believe), any school that wants to make you an offer can see every other school you're accepted at. The only negative thing I've heard from an adcom is that they don't really like to see that you're holding 10+ acceptances sometimes as it gets past January. It can be seen as not really fair to other people and that you should be able to narrow it down a little bit. (Not me speaking, it was an adcom like i said so inb4 "they earned the acceptances rabble rabble!!")

Thanks for the breakdown. I'm glad to hear there isn't scut work for students, and I'm willing to bet the "luck of the draw" on ease of grading isn't any different at any school.

Just for clarification, here is the timeline from the AAMC handbook:

The AAMC shares acceptance information across schools in order to assist medical schools' adherence to AAMC recommendations. These data are shared as follows:
a) Beginning in February of each year, a medical school that has accepted an applicant can view the other school or schools that have accepted the applicant, if applicable.
b) Beginning in April of each year, a medical school can view the school or schools that have accepted an applicant, even if that applicant has not yet been accepted by the medical school.

SLU's wording makes it seem like you're signing on though with the "intent to register" part. It seems less like holding an acceptance.

congratulations to all of those that got accepted! i interviewed on nov 1st and i'm anxiously waiting for a response! do any of you remember if there was a particular day that you got the email? every time my phone buzzes with a new email, i freak out lol. not only that, i went to SLU for undergrad so i keep getting emails from the bookstore/career services/etc and they make it worse! lol

Stoked about this one! I came in with an open mind and left thoroughly impressed by the school. It is my first choice. Loved the school, and the crazy brain removal lecture I sat through. Saint Louis seemed like a decent city as well.

Interviewed 11/7 (complete early September).

Yeah so I am even more confused right now. I will phone SLU's office tomorrow. It would suck if we have to reject a school before all interviews/decisions come out. 🙁

Sending the deposit and signed code of conduct IS holding your acceptance. You can still withdraw at any point. You don't need to reject SLU's offer right now, the deposit is refundable before May 15th (according to MSAR). Save yourself a phone call. Hope this helps. 🙂
