Is everyone's photo showing up as "photo unavailable" after uploading it? Or is this just me?

Mine was fine... had some trouble getting it to be the right file size, but after that it uploaded with no problem.

So for the additional comments I just talked about the Jesuit tradition. Didn't go into depth about what I've done, as that's probably clear in my application itself. ~200 words....do you all think that's okay? I didn't really go into specifics about SLU, just discussed stuff from the mission statement. Is it advisable to talk about specific things about the university beyond that? I don't want to make it sound like I just quick searched through their latest newsletter and am listing things off that...

I went to SLU undergrad and have done research with a couple of the SLUSOM ADCOM members. Don't talk about the Jesuit mission if all you have to say is how great you think it sounds based on the mission statement. They'll know you're full of it. I've also seen their interview checklist and it's pretty much focused on weeding out people who are insincere in their ECs and interest in SLU. I don't know if it's true or not, but one of the ADCOM members told me that if you get an interview you are pretty much going to get in unless you mess up. Just a heads up.

I go to a Jesuit undergrad, and mentioned it in that essay. Brought in some "Cura Personalis" to introduce why I value a Jesuit education

If it's not illegal to share the secondary question prompts, can anybody share them?
My AMCAS won't be reviewed for another week and I want to get started on the answers so I can send secondaries quicker.

There's none... just an optional place to include comments or anything you want them to know.

If you've been out of school for awhile they give you space to tell what you've been up to as well.

I see. Thanks.
I took about few months off because of school transfer. That should be rather easy to explain.

As with all schools, the prompts from last year are in the 2011-2012 threads. They don't change much, if at all, year to year.

I discussed what I've done for the past year extensively in my work/activities and personal statement. Since I have 10k characters, would you go even more in depth about them? Or just summarize in a paragraph and let the personal statement take care of the rest?

As far as the pass/fail goes, you are still TECHNICALLY ranked the first two years, but honestly, the only reason that matters for anything is if you're shooting for AOA (and that's not purely grade based... it's based on leadership, your relationship with the administration, and grades... and clinical grades are weighted to count as 2/3 of that). Your rank in the class is never released to residency directors or anyone else. It is a 100% internal ranking system. The class of 2013 was not purely pass-fail (they were the first class without "grades" and they were working out kinks)... they were on a pass-fail curve where a few people would still fail each class just based on the nature of the system. The class of 2014 (my class) and on were switched over to straight pass-fail where, theoretically, the entire class can pass every class since professors set a minimum point/percentage level that's considered passing. You're never going to completely get rid of gunners in any med school and administration says classes kind of cycle (supposedly every other class is more laid-back), but given that, my class works pretty well together and the atmosphere is fantastic.

This and what mimelim (hey TL 😉) said isn't 100% true. I was in the class of 2012 and decently involved with curricula changes and AOA selection. There's going to be a huge change to how AOA is selected if what Slavin wants goes through. Essentially the grades 1st and 2nd year won't matter as long as you pass. Even now, I wouldn't say the clinical grades are weighted to any specific amount for AOA selection - you just have to be eligible. Then the selection committee decides on what is important.

I agree with mimelim though, I've heard horror stories about the class below (I've had pleasant experiences with the only 2013 MS's i interacted with), which goes to show that I don't think Pass/Fail has any influence on the gunnership of a class - just has to do with the particular class make up.

I'd like to hear about what Slavin et al. have planned. We talked about this after graduation one day... While Slavin were of similar opinions about AOA, he didn't seem optimistic that it would change. But it was a short conversation, didn't really get that feeling. 😛

Mine was fine.

Jesuit isn't the same as Catholic.

Jesuit is definitely Catholic. Unless you mean that Jesuits are typically more laid back than your typical Catholic...then I would agree.

I mean exactly what I typed. "Jesuit isn't the same as Catholic." As someone who went to a Catholic middle school and Jesuit undergraduate, I should know.

Would you say Catholic is the same thing as Christian? Or red is the same thing as color? Probably not.

Maybe I am mistaken but I went to a Jesuit middle and high school and we had required Mass, all of our religion classes were based upon Catholic teachings, and I just looked up the Jesuits to be sure and it says they follow the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. I do not see how they are not Catholic. But if you have some understanding of them that I don't, please correct me.

"Jesuit isn't the same as Catholic" is not the same as "A Jesuit isn't a Catholic."

Like I said, red is not the same the same as color. Though they are a Catholic sect, the Jesuits have their own mission and set of beliefs.

So do the sisters of mercy yet they are still catholic.

The mission of the Jesuits.... promotion of catholic ideals through education of the whole person body, mind and spirit. Yeah I would have to say they are just as catholic as the rest of them.

That would make SLU a catholic university.

Submitted SLU secondary today. I only wrote a short paragraph about what I am doing during the 2012-2013 year; very matter-of-fact since it was detailed in AMCAS and it's not really all that interesting or life changing. Also didn't write anything for the optional essay. Couldn't think of anything about "Why SLU" that would be unique, so I spared the adcoms the trouble and skipped that part.

Again, I didn't say that Jesuits are not Catholics. Jesuits are a Catholic Sect with their own unique qualities. If you interview at SLU and say you like that they're a Catholic school, chances are your interviewer will ask you if you know what a Jesuit is. If SLU thought of itself as a Catholic school, it would call itself a Catholic school. They make the Jesuit distinction because it is valued here and if you think Jesuit/Catholic can be used interchangeably at this institution, you are sorely mistaken. Going back to the simple analogy again, red is a color, but red and color are not the same thing.

I don't understand why this is beyond your comprehension.

Edit: Here's the bottom line.

SLU is a Jesuit institution. Yes, the Jesuits are a Catholic Sect, but a Jesuit is not the same as a Catholic.

SLU does call itself a catholic school... Saint Louis University is a Catholic, Jesuit university ranked among the top research institutions in the nation.

I never used catholic interchangeably with Jesuit so I have no idea where you get that idea from.
If I call SLU a catholic school I am correct. If I call SLU a Jesuit school I am just being specific toward the priestly order that established the school. Think about it like this... Notre Dame is a catholic school, it is also a brotherhood of the holy cross school.

If my interviewer is more concerned that I don't call SLU a Jesuit school then how well I carry myself as a potential doctor I really don't think its the school for me. Considering I know the area quite well and know a good amount of SLU alumni I doubt this will ever be a problem. I can talk about how my ideals line up with the Jesuit ideals and the Catholic ideals from a different perspective.

It seems like you are trying to set them apart from the catholic church... which doesn't make sense and I have no idea why you would want to do that. They are Catholic, they are the Church. There Ideals and mission are one and the same, Jesuit just do it through education. Jesuit = catholic but catholic does not equal Jesuit, I get it.

To partly quote Inigo Montoya, You keep using that phrase... I don't think it means what you think it means....

ya'll need to stop with this catholic vs jesuit shiet

Can someone please type out the secondaries? My primary is still under review...

Any idea how they are reviewing primaries? Alphabetically? I submitted mine before the release date and have not heard anything about a secondary yet. Should I be worried?

Definitely not alphabetically. Have you been verified yet? If not, that is why you havent received one yet.

Sorry if this has been answered already, but I couldn't locate my answer in forum search.

How do we know if they have received our LORs? When I click on "Status" it just tells me they have my photo and fee and my app has been certified. I see no way to check if our file is complete or not...

assuming you sent them through amcas i would assume that they are safely on their way there/if not there already. you can always just email them and ask too

My application has been verified and I have been receiving secondaries from other schools. I don't want to over react but it still seems strange to me as I meet their demographics very well.

Well they send automatic secondaries so your demographics are not going to get you a secondary before someone who doesn't meet their demographics. Not even 100% sure what you mean by that anyway, but you can give them a call or email if you want to see what the hold-up is.

I haven't gotten a secondary either and my amcas was verified before the end of June.

my amcas was verified monday morning and this was one of the very first I got. I think sometimes the process of sending out the app is just kind of random. I wouldn't freak out yet

Just a heads up to all, don't certify the app before adding your photo. Unlike other schools you can't go back and add it after. Lesson learned... I'll have to call them tomorrow :smack:

I just realized I did this too. What did they end up doing?

They just asked me to email my photo with my first name, last name and AMCAS #. It was uploaded to my file the next day. They were super nice about it.

Does everyone in this thread have SLUSOM as one of their top (or the top) choices or are you just posting because it's one of the many schools to which you applied? I'm a relatively new member to this forum and am merely curious, in case you were wondering why I asked such a random question 🙂

While I may have applied to many programs, I only applied to schools where my values match the mission of the school, and where I would be more than happy to attend.

Having said that, SLU is one of my top choices.

It's not one of my top choices, because I would prefer to go to one of my state schools, but I would be very happy to go here - which is why I applied! I subscribe to the threads for all the schools I applied to just so I can be notified if there are any interesting updates that I may have missed out on (secondaries, interview invites, etc.)

Good luck!

My top choice. I went to SLU undergrad, and my girlfriend goes to SLUSOM.

Dang that's nice..You won't have to worry about long distance and you'll have someone to give you pointers/advice.. double bonus

I find the Jesuit considerations of this school funny because its acronym is SLU.

Yea, she's an MS3 now. Knowing what books to get/not get is a pretty huge advantage.. if only monetarily.
