Not a student, but I have interviewed there twice. I think the crime rate takes into account East St. Louis which is very dangerous, but that's across the state border into illinois and far away from SLU and Wash U. I may stand to be corrected though.

I've posted before, but safety isnt an issue if you're halfway intelligent about how you handle yourself in public. Slu police is the third largest police force in the state of missouri. I've lived across the street from Slu for 5-6 years and never had a problem.

Assuming the municipal police departments of Kansas City and St. Louis are #1 and #2, it's not at all reassuring that SLU requires a police force larger than the police force of, say, Springfield (not exactly a small town).

Can't be right. Saint Louis county has a pop of ~900,000-1,000,000 and has some pretty high crime areas. It has it's own police force. It's gotta be bigger than SLU's. Also, state highway patrol has to be pretty big.
Although MedPR could be cheating since the State Patrol and STL City cops are TECHNICALLY state militias (that ticket you for speeding not protect us from, say, Kansas).

This is what SLU told us 2-3 years ago. Though I guess it could've been a lie 😕

The Saint Louis County Police Force contains 1053 members. Of which, 801 are commissioned/sworn members (those with the power of arrest). Also, they have 6 helicopters and one fixed wing aircraft. Plus the usual, K9, SWAT, etc. I'm going to assume that dwarf's SLU's DPS force, unless SLU has a cop for every 13 students...

Okay thanks! So I'm actually here in St. Louis, and I'm staying with a student host who lives in a really cute and safe neighborhood, only ~1 mile from campus. However, she said that you definitely don't want to be walking around the city at night by yourself (obvi), and also even in her safe neighborhood nobody goes outside after it gets dark. And the neighborhoods here are "blended", meaning one block may be decent but the immediate block right after may be super ghetto.

But from what I can see so far, it's not terrible.... but definitely not a city where you can just comfortable roam around whenever you'd like. I'll post again once I get a feel for the SOM!
 
I had an interview at SLU and Cooper and trust me...Cooper is definitely in a worse area
 
The inner city isn't super safe, I have not had any issues personally, but I watch the news. There are shooting and robberies here and there. Suburbs out west are as safe as any other cookie cutter white bread suburb in the country though, and quite nice I might add. You could choose to live there and commute, maybe 10-20 minutes drive. Inner city has quite a few relatively safe neighborhoods/blocks though, little pockets throughout, if you don't mind being in the vicinity of poverty and somewhat high crime area's a mile or even couple block away. The inner city has lots of nice restaurants, coffee shops, bars, parks. I decided to channel my inner hipster chose the urban route and live in the city, its been nice, lots of stuff to do, lots of restaurants and coffee shops, and I'm minutes from school so that is nice.

Like in any inner city....if you don't join the gangs, stay away from shady areas at night, and don't run your mouth to strangers/possible gang members, you'll probably be fine.

Just until after your interview is over. If you have a morning interview, you'll be done by 1pm.

Dr. Shah is super nice. One of the nicest attendings at St. Mary's for OBGYN. She's talkative and friendly! should be a great interview.

STL Police = Saint Louis Police = Saint Louis City Police
Not the same as Saint Louis County Police. Separate governmental entities, thus separate police forces.

Anyone with a recent submission out there? If so, how long has it been taking to receive the secondary lately? Thanks and good luck to all.

Just wondering- what are the student organizations like on campus? I couldn't find anything on the website about them and I'm curious as to whether most groups are just specialty interest groups or if there are more varied things to get involved in such as a music in medicine or nutrition education group, etc...

There are a ton. More than you can possible get involved in. I don't know why, but we hide most of the website organizations in a slu only site. Here is a list I pulled of just some of the interest group, let me know if you have questions about a particular one, I will try to answer:

Also, SLU has interest group meetings often and they usually have some kind of food (pizza, sandwiches, etc). The assumption is that you'll sit through the meeting though rather than grab food and leave.

I may or may not have gone to my share of them as a pre-med 🙂
 
Does anyone know if there will be a safe place to put our luggage during the interview day or will we be expected to keep it with us?

When I was there, there was a little side area in the admissions office that people left their luggage in.
 
Does anyone here know if SLU has a student host program? I am an OOS interviewing in mid-october so I want to know where most other people that interviewed in the past stayed so I can organize my trip. Any help on this issue is greatly appreciated...Thanks!

They have a student host program that is $26 a night. You can sign up by going to the secondary website, clicking the interview tab, then interview links, and student lodging program.

The student host program is amazing! My host picked me up from the airport, took me around St. Louis (I touched the Arch!) and to dinner with a bunch of other 1st years and a few other interviewees that night, made me a good luck breakfast before my interview, and drove me back to the airport. Best spent $26 ever! 🙂

Also, concerning the safety of the city, I didn't really feel unsafe at all (maybe because I was staying in a nicer area and didn't walk around too much after my interview in the med school area). If anything, I felt a lot less safe at Cleveland around Case Western than I did here, and Cleveland was ranked #10 most dangerous city, whereas St. Louis is supposedly #1. BUT apparently do NOT ever go into North St. Louis across the bridge...avoid that area and you'll be fine.
 
I think you mean east saint louis (if you're talking about a bridge, ie over the Mississippi) - and that is more or less true. It's probably fine during the day (i've driven through a few times then), but less so at night.

Yea across the bridge is east stl (i.e. illinois), but north stl is definitely more dangerous.. like grand and I-70 = get car jacked at a red light.

I'm not too concerned about safety atm like this whole thread is turning into. Anyone else getting IIs? This is the first one posted in a long while. I was complete in July and wondering if a LOI would be appropriate, or if SLU frowns upon them.

Received an invite yesterday. I'm OOS and was complete around 20 August.

For what it's worth, last year I sent them a LOI in Nov and received an II in Dec.
