2013-2014 Duke University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Grats! Looks like the end for those of us that are silent without ii. Oh well

I think there is at least one MMI session left...just pure speculation but the interview invitation said interviews "tentatively" end on February 20th, and all the dates I saw were before then. But maybe that's just me hoping the non-rolling schools aren't done sending IIs...

Kinda disappointed about no II... I spent more time on this secondary than I would ever care to admit. I know SDN is not a perfect barometer, but it seems like they barely invited anyone for an interview complete outside of July.

II this morning!! This definitely made my day/week. Complete first week of August. The dates are all early February...yikes
Congrats!!

Can anyone tell me how long the interview season is?

I know how you feel. When were you complete?

i just submitted my secondary and am complete, i am super late i hope it doesnt bust my chances.

I'd recommend sending in an update or supplemental email at this stage if you haven't been invited to interview----they're nearly done inviting! :nailbiting:

Really? Nearly done inviting? Wtffff. Not that I'm realistically expecting an invite.

It's futile, I just called and they told me directly they don't accept pre-interview letters of update.

Goodness, the thought that they are already into february interview dates is really depressing. I'm desperately keeping my fingers crossed for an II here.

I guess early on, they didn't mind an update letter because I called back in August, and the woman, Ruth, was happy to have me email my update letter to her and promptly responded with a confirmation email that my update had been added to my file.

What happened to pre-interview rejections? I thought I remembered someone earlier in the thread posting that their status had been changed to something along the lines of "your application is no longer under consideration." While I'd much rather get an ii if that's not going to be the case they could release me of any expectation... (Complete late August)

II this morning!!! SUPER surprised. I was complete mid-August, stats on MDapps. Thanks for the love Duke!

I filled out a form for a student host request, and I haven't heard back yet. I am interviewing in about a week. How does the hosting process work?

Rejected today. Stats closely comparable to MSAR-listed averages, and complete in mid-July. At this point, I'm almost glad for the clarity. I've been accepted to another school that's a top choice for me, and the sooner I can narrow down my options to start planning for next year, the better.

When are you going to Duke? I'm your fan.

Pre or post interview?

Hmm still application screening for me...

Pre or post interview?

All decisions post-interview are given out in March.

Submitted this morning and received an invitation this afternoon, I'm speechless...

Unfortunately, they had no more interview spots 🙁

Will check with the admissions office to see whether I missed my chance.

Wow, that's amazing. I hope they can fit you in given how much they like you! Out of curiosity, what was your word range for your essays?

Hah, thanks!

My essay lengths were (approximately):

1. 700 words
2. 375 words
3. 650 words

For the fourth, optional, essay, I chose to write about the valuing in giving back to one's community. It was ~600 words. Overall, quite a lengthy application in my opinion, though I think had I spent more time editing I could have easily cut all of them down to under 500 words.

I should also add that I think my stats are solidly above the MSAR averages, so that may have played a role in the quick turnaround.

Good luck! I expect there's still hope!

How did people feel after the Duke mmi? I came out of that feeling pretty crappy and most of my fellow interviewees didn't think it was bad at all which worries me. I really don't know how I did.

Does that mean no more interviews are being given out. Just submitted today and if that is the case I just wasted quite a bit of time

Did anyone complete in September get interview?
I'd like to know this as well! I'm guessing you submitted in Sept? Me too.

You submitted your application today? IIRC, the deadline was yesterday. As for the invites, I have no idea if they're finished handing them out.

i've done a couple mmis, but Duke's didn't feel that great to me either. some stations could have definitely gone better for me. although maybe you're being too hard on yourself?

I interviewed at NYU before duke and I thought that was much "easier"? Maybe I'm just comparing too harshly. Did you happen to interview at NYU? I felt like some duke stations went really well, some just ok, and one or 2 crappy. It kinda feels like they fall under a bell curve. haha.

I haven't interviewed at NYU, but this is how I felt too

I meant the day of the deadline. I would hope they would not give out all remaining invites before the end of the deadline. I would hope. However, nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to med school admissions.

I wonder if they count on a few people dropping out as they get other offers and therefore do have more interview spaces available. They could then add more dates if they really needed to (i.e. if enough people didn't drop by February).

This is bound to happen. Good point.I'm sure it applies to other schools too

I called the admissions office. They stated that they will be extending interview dates, so more interviews will be given out!!! I did not ask how many but hopefully this is good news for those still waiting.

Is it worth sending pre interview letters/updates? I'd really like to interview here!

Anyone know if Duke's pre-clinical year is pass/fail? I cannot find the info anywhere on their website.

I guess no news might still not be bad news...

Hope so!!!!

Judging from last year's thread, there's going to be a very small trickle of interview invites coming from here until they do mass status changes saying we've been rejected. I'm thinking that from here on out, any new interview invites are probably to make up for interviewees who withdraw their app (because they've gotten into a school they like better or are tired of going to interviews).

I'm crying a little on the inside.
